August 2018 The Trindle Trumpeter 1 Over the summer, weve taken a rest from our regular Sunday morning Christian education programs, refreshing our spirits with time for fellowship with the whole gathered church community after our combined worship service each week. As August rolls around, though, we are gearing up for a great start to the new 2018-2019 program year! Kick-off Sunday will be September 9. Thats the day we return to two worship services, at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., with Christian education for all ages 9:15 a.m. On Kick-off Sunday, the whole congregation comes together at 9:15 for fellowship, fun, and an introduction to our 2018-2019 Sunday school offerings. Classes for children and youth will again be grouped as follows: 0-2 years (nursery care), 3- and 4-year-olds, kindergarten through 2 nd grade, 3 rd -5 th grades, middle school, and high school. Adult education classes continuing this year will include the Crossroads class (discussing the intersection of faith and current events), the Young at Heart class (which studies the lectionary texts for the day), and the Far Side class (which engages extended explorations of varying topics or books). This fall, we will also be offering an additional Sunday morning class. This will be a topical class, with short-term studies, generally from 4 to 8 weeks long. It will be led primarily, though not exclusively, by the pastors and seminarian. Participants are welcome to attend whatever sessions seem most interesting to them, without feeling the need to commit to being an ongoing member of the class. From September 16 through November 4, we will be engaging some of the questions that were preached on during this summers series on Questions of Faith. It will be an opportunity to have open conversation about your thoughts or ongoing questions about those topics and the perspectives that were offered in the sermons. Another new opportunity will be one we are offering jointly with other congregations from the Mechanicsburg Area Lutheran Churches. Recognizing that family and work schedules can sometimes make participation in traditional Christian education formats difficult, were going to take advantage of the possibilities offered by online video technology. Wed like to create a class that you can attendonline from the comfort of your home, most likely later in the evening. If this sounds like something that you might be interested in, we invite you to go to our website and click on the survey about online faith formation to let us know your answers to a few questions about your preferences regarding day, time, frequency, and topic. Were excited about these opportunities, new and ongoing, to grow in our faith together. There are other conversations going on as well about additional classes and studies that may be offered this year, so keep watch for other announcements. Our congregational goal team working on a broader strategy for adult faith formation is continuing its efforts too. So if you have thoughts about other opportunities that would help you grow in faith, please let us know. We hope youll join us this year! Over the summer, we’ve taken a rest from our regular Sunday morning Christian education programs, refreshing our spirits with time for fellowship with the whole gathered church community after our combined worship service each week. As August rolls around, though, we are gearing up for a great start to the new 2018-2019 program year! Kick-off Sunday will be September 9. That’s the day we return to two worship services, at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., with Christian education for all ages 9:15 a.m. On Kick-off Sunday, the whole congregation comes together at 9:15 for fellowship, fun, and an introduction to our 2018-2019 Sunday school offerings.

Another new opportunity will be one we are offering jointly with other congregations from the Mechanicsburg Area Lutheran Churches. Recognizing that family and work schedules can sometimes make participation in traditional Christian education formats difficult, we’re going to take advantage of the possibilities offered by online video technology. We’d like to create a class that you can “attend” online from the comfort of your home, most likely later in the evening. In Worship This Month…

Sunday, August 5 – 11th Sunday After Pentecost

In August we will continue with our preaching series on questions of faith. How can we hold each other

accountable without becoming judgmental? That is the faith question we will be hearing about in worship

this day. We will be welcoming a guest preacher, Chelle Huth, who is a Deacon in the Lower

Susquehanna Synod and works at United Lutheran Seminary. Please note that normally, today would be

rail communion, however due to carpet installation going on, we will receive communion by intinction.

Sunday, August 12 – 12th Sunday After Pentecost

This morning we will be hearing about angels in worship. Angels appear in many ways and places

throughout the Bible. This morning we will look at what role they play in God’s kingdom and in our

lives.

Sunday, August 19 – 13th Sunday After Pentecost

When will Jesus come again? The topic of the second coming of Christ has been a big and debated

question since his resurrection. This Sunday we will look at what scripture tells us of Christ’s return and

how we ought to live in the meantime. We will also be celebrating the Blessing of the Backpacks as our

teachers and students head back to school.

Sunday, August 26 – 14th Sunday After Pentecost

What happens after you die? People of different faith have differing beliefs on what happens after death.

Even within Christianity and the Lutheran Church, people disagree on what happens after death. This

morning we will engage in conversation about what happens when we or a loved one dies. Also on this

Sunday during fellowship time, there will be a presentation on the ELCA Youth Gathering by those who

went on the trip to Houston, TX.

“God’s Work. Our Hands.” Sunday Sunday, September 9, 2018

Across the ELCA on September 9th congregations will be putting that slogan to work. That afternoon, along with members of the other ELCA congregations in the Mechanicsburg Area we will be out and about serving in the community. We are already collecting items for personal care kits, and we will be returning to PET (Personal Energy Transportation) again this year. Other projects are still being nailed down, so look for more information in upcoming bulletins and signup sheets.

Materials for Personal Care Kits should be new and in good condition:

Light-weight bath-size towels (between 20” x 40” and 52” x 27”), dark color recommended Bath-size bars of soap (2 or 3 bars equaling 8 to 9 oz. will go in each kit), any brand, in original

wrapping Adult-size toothbrushes, in original packaging Sturdy combs Metal nail clippers (attached file optional)

ON BEHALF OF THE STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE:

Summer is a time for relaxation, vacations or staycations, and faith renewal. Even though

there is a brief break from Sunday School we need to continue in our faith formation and the

Church needs your continued support! While you enjoy a slower pace and pursue your

individual path of discipleship, we encourage you to continue your giving and worship even

when you are out of town. E-giving makes regular giving very easy even when we are not

able to attend worship! Our prayerful commitment to giving back to the Lord from our gifts

and blessings should be regular and sustained. Just like our personal financial obligations,

the expense of Trindle Spring's many ministries continue even during the summer. Please

consider E-giving and your continued generous support throughout the year.

Fall will be a fresh opportunity for us to bring our time and talents to the work of the

Church and the furtherance of God's will. Look for more information to come.

Youth Updates & Events

YOUTH GATHERING REFLECTIONS

Over 31,000 people from across the country participated in the ELCA Youth Gathering from June 27 to July 1 in Houston, TX. It was an amazing event, and our group of 20 from some of the Mechanicsburg Area Lutheran Churches, including 14 TSLC youth and adult leaders, were so fortunate to be able to attend. So first, a big THANK YOU to all of you—for your financial generosity, your book donations, your constant support, and your prayers. We are all incredibly grateful!

We invite you to stay after worship on Sunday, August 26 to hear more about our trip. During the fellowship hour, the TSLC youth who attended the Gathering will be sharing some of their photos, experiences, and reflections. We know many of you followed along with our journey through our Facebook page and by watching some of the live-streamed speakers and worship. Videos of the speakers and other parts of the Gathering can still be found at the ELCA Youth Gathering YouTube page.

When you come to the presentation, some of the things you’ll likely hear about include our service day at Jack Yates High School; bumper cars in the Interaction Center; creating charts for teaching children letters, numbers, colors, and shapes in Ethiopia; a speaker who reminded us that “there’s grace for that;” an 11-year-old girl who spoke with amazing poise before a stadium of 31,000 people; serving communion at the closing worship; going to the beach, and so much more! We also had some amazing meals, met wonderful people, got to know each other much better, and grew in our faith and in our understanding about how God changes everything through Jesus Christ.

We look forward to telling you more about it on August 26!

Youth and Family Summer Mailing

Can it really be time for back-to-school? It’s hard to believe, but we’re already gearing up for the 2018-2019 program year in Children, Youth, and Family ministry. Later in the month, families with children will be receiving an important mailing with the school year calendar, the emergency form, information about Christian Education, and more — so keep an eye out for it to arrive! A couple dates to make sure you have on your calendar in the meantime: Sunday, September 9 is Kick-Off Sunday during the Christian Education hour at 9:15 a.m., and the first Koinonia of the year will be held on Sunday, September 16 at 5 p.m.

ALiVE 2018 Middle School Youth Event

September 28-30, 2018 Camp Nawakwa

It’s time to register for ALiVE! ALiVE is a retreat offered

by the Lower Susquehanna Synod for students in 6-8th

grades. This year it will be held September 28-30, 2018 at

Camp Nawakwa. ALiVE is a great opportunity for middle

school youth to gather to make new friends, deepen

relationships with old friends, and to worship, learn, sing,

dance, play, talk, and share meals together. The theme for

2018 is, "Dear Hate...," which will equip youth to confront

hate in all areas of their lives with the love we share in

Christ. The total cost for ALiVE is $132—families

contribute the $50 deposit for each child, and Trindle

Spring pays the rest. (If the $50 is a hardship, please let us

know—scholarships are available.) If they have not yet

done so, youth should turn in the ALiVE permission slip

and check to Pastor Sigrid’s mailbox by September 2.

MISSIONARY SPOTLIGHT

OUR MISSIONARY- STEPHEN DEAL

COSTA RICA

(Excerpts from an email from February 21, 2018) Dear Friends in Christ, Greetings from Costa Rica. In a previous missionary update (Sept. 2017), I shared information on the part of my missionary assignment that is focused on AMMPARO - ELCA’s compassionate & comprehensive response to the plight of Central American migrant children and families who are fleeing the violence and poverty in their home countries. Part of my role is to deepen our understanding of the root causes behind this continuing exodus and to make visible the perils faced by children & families during the parts of the migrant journey that receive minimal attention in the U.S.

Hopefully, many of you are faithful readers of LIVING LUTHERAN. If so, you may have seen the article that I authored (in the February issue) on the Migrant Ministry program of the Salvadoran Lutheran Church. This is the most recent in a series of articles that I have written for ELCA publications, starting in the fall of 2014. If you missed the previous articles (one on El Salvador, the other on Honduras), just ask and I’ll be glad to send you copies*. May the Spirit of the Crucified and Risen Christ continue to strengthen and sustain, not only the ministry of our Salvadoran brothers & sisters, but also encourage all of God’s people everywhere to open our hearts and minds, our homes and churches, to the immigrants and refugees in our midst. With peace, Stephen Deal

TUESDAY'S TUNES ON FACEBOOK

Each summer we enjoy singing TSLC members' "Favorite Hymns" during worship. But have you ever wondered the story behind those well-loved hymns? Each Tuesday on our TSLC Facebook page, you can find the history and story behind one of the hymns we sang the previous Sunday. Don't miss this chance to check out our church's Facebook page and learn a little more about some of your favorite hymns!

Trindle Spring Lutheran Church Safety and Security Taskforce

I hope everyone is having a safe and enjoyable summer. Please see the following tips to help keep everyone safe:

Drink plenty of fluids Wear sunscreen Check on older neighbors for their safety Wear bug repellant and check for ticks after being outside. If you are spending time on or near water please be safe, wear Coast Guard

approved personal floatation devices and keep an eye on your children as they play in or near the water.

At our recent CPR training, we asked the following question of our students: Where is the Church AED located? To our surprise, only one of the students in the class could definitively tell us where the Church’s AED is located. As long-time, and some of us as life-long members, we take for granted that all members know where the AED, First Aid kits, fire extinguishers, fire pull stations or even emergency exits, are located in the church. We are in the building every week and sometime multiple times throughout the week and walk by these things and don’t take notice to them because we don’t need them at the time. If we were to have an emergency during a church service, would you know how many exits there are out of the sanctuary? There are actually five exits out of the sanctuary. In addition to the main sliding glass doors that people enter and exit Sunday morning for the service, there are doors on either side in the rear by the wooden pews from the old church, and you can find emergency exits in the front of the sanctuary on both sides of the raised area where the altar is located.

In the near future we will be making some changes to help with finding these things more easily in an emergency. There will be new signage for the AED and we will make First Aid kits more visible. We ask you to look around when you walk into the sanctuary, identify where fire extinguishers are, ask yourself if there was an emergency how would I get out of this room? Are there people around me who might need assistance getting out of the sanctuary/classroom? If someone called for an AED could I grab it quickly? By the way for those who may not know, our AED is currently located by the bulletin board outside the church office.

I hope you are finding these letters interesting and helpful. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to ask me or email me at [email protected].

Stay Safe! Dennis S. Stoner

HELP US MAKE MUSIC THIS SUMMER!

As part of our music for worship this summer, we will be having several "pick up" groups. For each of these, we will rehearse for about 30 minutes after worship for the two Sundays before that choir sings/plays in worship. The time commitment is minimal, and the experience promises to be fun and meaningful! If you have any questions, please contact Danielle Erdley at [email protected].

• Woodwind Ensemble - Playing in worship on August 12, rehearsing August 5 & one other day TBD • Brass Ensemble - Playing in worship on August 26. Contact Ed Hipkiss if interested! • Women's Choir - Singing in worship on September 2, rehearsing August 12 & 19 at 10:45 a.m. & a brief

run-through on 8/26 before the Youth Gathering recap. ___________________________________________________________________

Do you enjoy working directly or indirectly with Children and Youth? We have many positions that need to be filled to assist us in providing our current programs.

• Could you supervise children in the nursery? • Do you enjoy working in the kitchen preparing • snacks? • Would you enjoy being a helper for teachers?

If you can answer "YES" to any of these questions then we ask that you prayerfully consider becoming an approved adult. Our Child Protection Policy with application and both State Police and PA Abuse Clearance forms can be found in the Education Wing by the large bulletin board. New clearances can be requested at www.epatch.state.pa.us and www.compass.state.pa

It is a simple process to fill out our KYCS application, apply for your clearances and then you would meet with Pastor Sigrid. Please contact Deb Sterling at [email protected] with any questions.

COMMUNITY DAY IN THE PARK

Don’t forget that from 10am-4pm on Saturday, August 11th TSLC is taking part in Community Day at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Park in Mechanicsburg. It is a day of swimming, games, and more. As a part of the collective Mechanicsburg Area Churches we are sponsoring the pool to be open at no cost, and we are also helping to provide for the family area with bouncy houses and face painting. Come and enjoy the day!

FAMILY PROMISE AT TSLC

For many people in our community, sudden homelessness is a reality. Trindle Spring has been blessed to be able to partner with Family Promise to help provide a safe place where families facing homelessness can remain together, receive the support they need, and work toward regaining independence. Our next host week for Family Promise will be September 9-16. Thank you to our wonderful and dedicated volunteer team.

We will need many volunteers to make this a success - from people to drive the Family Promise families to and from the Day Center in Lemoyne, to those who will provide dinner for the families, to our overnight hosts and those willing to set up and tear down. We ask you to prayerfully consider volunteering your time to this crucial ministry to families in our community. A "time-to-sign-up" link will soon be sent to all those on the Family Promise email list and posted on the church website. We are also seeking donations of Giant gift cards to help defray the cost of food for breakfast and lunch. We are always looking for new people to get involved in this crucial ministry. If you would like more information, please contact any member of the Family Promise team - Diane Boone, Cindy Duck, Karen Eppley, or Danielle Erdley.

TSLC uses all money received through this program to support our youth and their trip to the ELCA Youth Gathering.

Gift cards are available on Sunday mornings - please see Robin Cleaver or call 717-766-5788 to order.

VBS ~THANK YOU

SHIPWRECKED ~ VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2018

At Shipwrecked Vacation Bible School we learned that God rescues us. When we feel lonely or feel powerless, God is by our side. All of our castaways served God by rescuing our neighbors. This week the Vacation Bible School offering supported New Hope Ministries. Every dollar donated this week bought food and essential items for New Hope Ministries. Our offering for the week totaled $856.31. We are so proud to show our love and care for our neighbors! We want to thank and acknowledge our participants and staff who made this a joyful week of learning and fellowship. We certainly praise God for everyone’s enthusiasm and talents! Notes of Thanks

Trindle Spring Lutheran Church,

Thank you for your contribution of $200.00 to Mechanicsburg Brethren in Christ Church to support the 2018

Community Day. We are blessed to be able to provide our community with a day of free pool access and

family fun activities (bouncy houses). As previously communicated, any surplus funds collected will be

donated to New Hope Ministries.

May the Lord bless you and keep you.

Sincerely,

Sarah Martin

Just a note to say hello-

Sometimes I forget to say thank you to the people who make my

life happy in so many ways. Sometimes I forget to tell them how

much I really do appreciate them for being an important part

of my life. So THANK YOU to all of you at Trindle Spring, just

for being there for me.

M. Louise Rider

OUTREACH COMMITTEE~THANK YOU

Trindle Spring provided lunches for New Hope Kids Club Summer program on July 2 and July 9th. We received a thank you note from New Hope and we wanted to thank everyone who shopped for the food and helped to pack the lunches on Sunday mornings. Thanks to you the job was done quickly and provided lunches for 50 children on each date. Thanks to Bob Lowstuter for delivering the meals to the Mechanicsburg site of New Hope. Supporting New Hope is just one of our congregation’s outreach into the community - your help and support are greatly appreciated. - Lynne Neibert

Thank you for your giving! Between the end of June and July your TSLC Family gave 338 pounds of food items to New Hope! Your giving makes a difference in your community. Thank you for providing help for the needy! -New Hope Ministries

Thank you for allowing us to have our dance here. Please accept this donation as a token of our appreciation.

Sincerely,

-The CPARC Dance Committee The mission of The Arc of Cumberland & Perry Counties (CPARC) is to empower, inspire, and educate people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families, and the community.
