Happy ‘Foremothers’ DayBy Vera [email protected]; 810-433-6823 While riding in my husband’s truck up Park Street in Fenton last Sunday, the road was so bumpy from potholes that my mind started wandering to what it must have been like in the 1800s. A lot has been written about our “forefathers,” but what about the life our pioneer “foremothers” must have led. I think a bumpy city street is bad. That in no way could compare to the bumpy rides through prairies, hills and moun-tains, all in a covered wagon? Or once you’ve settled in the middle of prairie nowhere, going everywhere on a horse or a horse-drawn buckboard. Can you imagine being severely sick to your stomach, suffering from a treacherous headache or worse, being pregnant, and just having to deal with it? I complain regularly that because I have a full-time job, I need to spend my Saturdays cleaning, doing laundry and other housework. At least I have a washing machine and dryer. There’s no way I would be able to wash the entire family’s stuff by hand, then haul it all outside to hang on a clothesline. Cooking and baking are among my favorite things to do. But I sure as heck don’t want to get up at 4 o’clock in the morning every day to bake fresh bread on the hearth for breakfast before the “men folk” come in from taking care

of the crops and livestock. Even if it was 100 degrees outside, these pioneer women baked every single day. It gets worse. When we want some-thing quick and easy for our weeknight dinner, I can stop at VG’s and buy a nice herb-roasted rotisserie chicken and some fresh sides from the salad bar. I can’t even imagine being a pioneer woman, having to go out back to the chicken coop, pick out a big fat bird, catch it and then kill it by wringing its neck. Then cut its head off, pluck every stinking feather out, and yank its in-nards before cooking it. I don’t think so! Personal hygiene? Our pioneer foremothers (and fathers) must have stunk to high heaven. Carrying water in buckets from a well or a river was back breaking work, not to mention having to build a fire to warm the bath. It’s almost guaranteed that dirty hair, stinky bodies and bad breath were a way of life, at least until Saturday rolled around. Then there is the lack of family plan-ning. You’re dead dog tired from work-ing your fingers to the bone all day, get into bed and look at your smiling husband. “Sure honey, we already have 11 children, what’s one more.” No way! Yes, our foremothers had it very rough. I think one of them lives in my house. I may have mentioned that oc-casionally a few strange things occur in my home built in 1860. One of them is that my dishwasher starts on its own from time to time. It’s situated in a way where it would be impossible to acci-dentally “butt bump” the on button. No, I think it’s my 1800s lady who likes my machine that washes dishes. I’m with ya sister! Happy “Foremoth-ers” Day!Opinions offered in Just Sayin’ are the author’s alone and do not neces-sarily reflect the opinion of the Tri-County Times or its staff. Email Vera at [email protected].

HOT LINE CONTINUED

YES, IF YOU’D listen to something other than Fox News or Facebook for your information and news you’d realize that crap about the Clintons is incorrect. It’s fake news and anything that was said about the Obamas being corrupt, is also fake news. You really ought to get your news from a reliable source.

PARDON ME, DEAR, please tell me how many hostages your great one, Obama, brought home? And it didn’t cost $150 billion to negotiate.

READING YOUR HOT line, I’ve got to say long live the King. With all these bleeding hearts people, who have got their head on backwards, they must real-ize that if we’re going to have a country, if the United States is going to exist,

we’ve got to have borders. People that argue against this should just let strang-ers come into their house to live.

I SAW THE comment about the first of Trump’s tax cuts are borrowing from either our future children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. What about the $75 trillion in unfunded liabilities for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid? Every-body wants to get something for nothing and have the next generation pay for it.

IT WAS A dark and stormy eight years when the man in the White House increased our taxes and regulations, destroyed the U.S. economy and cost millions of U.S. jobs. He corrupted the FBI, DOJ, the EPA and the CIA. And he made horrific trades in foreign policy deals. That’s the horror story that keeps me up at night.

• Approximately 93 percent of moms do the cleaning.

• About 39 percent of moms swear in front of their kids.

• Fifty-four percent of moms allow their child to play in a home that has firearms.

BABY TALKBabies came up with

the “mom” sound. In many and languages, the word for “mother” or “mom” starts with an “m.” That’s because one

of the first sounds a baby can make is the “ma” sound. In Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, it’s “mama.” In Iceland, it’s “mamma,” in Punjabi it’s “ma,” and in

Hebrew it’s “em.”

In a survey of 4,000 moms by

sheknows.com, it was found that...

ARE YOU MY MOTHER?

In 2014, a pregnant single mom was investigated in Washington for welfare

fraud after a DNA test showed she wasn’t the mother of her own

children. She went for follow-up tests, and doctors realized she

was a chimera (a person who has two totally

different sets of DNA inside their

body).

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." To this day, especially in times of "disaster," I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.” - Mr. Rogers

MURALISTContinued from Page 1B Randy Redmond of RHL Group Investments Group commissioned Burdick. This mural depicts a steam engine rounding a bend in the track, flanked by a pond on one side and a car racing along beside it on the other. The horizon is all trees and farmland and the sky is dotted with hot air balloons. Burdick estimates the mural is 26 feet high and 60 feet wide, not in-cluding the smaller “pond” section. He has done more than 20 murals, and this is his largest to date. He describes his style as “street art,” which has its roots in graffiti. While it’s all spray paint, he ac-commodates the preferences of the municipality he’s working in. His design is colorful, and clearly spray painted, but was originally more abstract. He made the design more realistic for the village. “You kind of have to be a little bit flexible,” he said. The mural contains soft fades, solid swaths of color, as well as sharp dense details. This is all possible with what spray paint artists call “can control,” literally referring to the control of the finger with the spray nozzle. The best place to

‘‘ You take the classic

art styles and process and just adapt it to a larger scale.’’Kevin Burdick

TRI-COUNTY TIMES | TIM JAGIELO

Kevin Burdick uses a variety of tips and spray patterns to get the different details on display on this mural.

Watch a mural being created Burdick has been commissioned to paint a mural on the south side of the El Topo restaurant at 113 Mill St. in Fenton. Burdick will create the mural from Monday, May 14, to Wednesday, May 16, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The public is welcome to watch. The mural is sponsored by the Fenton Arts Council, and will depict a stylized fox and eagle, spray painted with colors from the Mexican flag. The eagle is symbolic of Mexico City and connects to Fenton through various eagle sightings in the area.

LAFF Bike-A-Thon on the moveThe third Bike-A-Thon in support of the Linden–Argentine–Fenton–Fenton Township (LAFF) multiuse pathway will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Saturday, May 19, at Hyatt Elementary in Linden. The initial project was selected by first- through third-grade students at State Road Elementary School in Fenton as being an event that addressed a public issue. Sonja Brooks and other elementary teachers supported the children in their efforts to organize and coordinate the project with school administration, local vendors and the community. To expand the event, it is being moved to Hyatt Elementary in neighboring Linden. There will be biking, face painting, music, ice cream and a day filled with lots of fun. All kids are invited and are encouraged to decorate their bikes before they will pedal around the course. For more information on the multiuse pathway and its development, visit laffpathways.com or see LAFF Pathways on Facebook. The 2017 bike-a-thon raised $2,420.

see the possible sharp lines are in the cattails in the smaller section of the building. He uses high quality acrylic spray paint, with interchangeable tips to change the spray pattern as needed. “They’re all specially made for street art, murals,” he said. He estimates he used 40 cans to paint the walls. He said his

mural should last 15 years before it begins to fade.

The mural process The mural process starts with the client. Burdick went through four to five different designs to show Redmond, and photo-shopped the images onto the building to simulate the final product. Once Redmond and Burdick agreed, they went to the Village Council for approval. The village

approved the design, which Burdick said he appreciates. Burdick started by scraping and spraying 10 gallons of primer on the wall. On late Monday, April 23, he projected the image of the design onto the wall to get the outlines of the design, and was painting details on Tuesday. “You take the classic art styles and process and just adapt it to a larger scale,” he said.

Summer is a great time of year for people and their pets to enjoy the great outdoors and soak up some sun. Just as men and women exercise cau-tion by applying sunscreen and staying hydrated on hot summer days, dog owners must take steps to protect their four-legged friends when bringing them outdoors. Heat stroke can pose a serious threat to dogs on hot days. Dog owners who routinely take their pets outdoors in summer must learn how to protect canines from heat stroke and how to recognize its symptoms. What is heat stroke? Dogs suffer from heat stroke when their body temperatures exceed 104 F and the built-in mechanisms they rely on to cool themselves - including panting - cease to function properly. But any temperature 103 F or above is considered abnormal. According to PetMD, heat stroke is a form of non-fever hyperthermia that can lead to multiple organ dysfunction. Is heat stroke immediately evident? Heat stroke can overwhelm dogs quickly, so dog owners should be especially diligent and watch their dogs closely when they are spending time outside on hot days. Dogs may first suffer from mild heat-related stress or moderate exhaus-tion before they begin experiencing the more severe symptoms of heat stroke, so dog owners should look for signs of stress or fatigue and bring their dogs inside immediately after noticing such symptoms. The consequences of heat stroke are severe, so dog owners should always err on the side of caution. What are the symptoms of heat stroke? Dogs that are overheating and potentially suf-fering from heat stroke may exhibit a number of symptoms. Such symptoms are typically easy to spot, but dog owners still must pay close at-tention to their four-legged friends during sum-mertime walks or play sessions in the backyard. According to the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation, signs that a dog is overheat-ing include:• Panting followedbydisorientationand fast,

noisy breathing• Collapsingorconvulsing• Brightredorbluegums• Vomitinganddiarrhea

Vomitanddiarrheaconnectedtoheatstrokemay contain blood. In addition, the eyes of dogs suffering from heat stroke may be glazed-over and such dogs may be unresponsive to com-mands, or their replies to commands may be slower than usual. Can heat stroke be prevented? Though dogs can suffer heat stroke even on mild days, dog owners can take precautionary measures.• Alterroutines.Walkingcanbegreatexercise

for dogs, but on hot days dog owners can walk their dogs when temperatures tend to be at their most mild, such as in the early morning hours or evenings when the sun is setting or has already set.

• Limitplaytime.Dogsgenerateheatwhenplay-ing and exercising, and their body temperatures may rise considerably on hot summer days. To reduce dogs’ risk of heat stroke, limit play time on hot days.

• Don’ttravelwithdogs.Temperaturescanbeunbearable inside vehicles, so dog owners should not take their dogs along when running errands on hot days.

Dog owners must be especially mindful of their dogs’ behavior on hot days. Protecting dogs from extreme heat can safeguard them from heat stroke, which can be fatal.

REVENGEJen (fearlessly embodied by Matilda Lutz, Rings) is enjoying a romantic getaway with her wealthy boyfriend which is suddenly disrupted when his sleazy friends arrive for an unannounced hunting trip. Tension mounts in the house

until the situation abruptly—and viciously—ntensifies, culminating in a shocking act that leaves Jen left for dead. Unfortunately for her assailants, Jen survives and reemerges with a relentless, wrathful intent: revenge. A white-knuckle tale of transgression and transformation. Revenge gloriously blurs the lines of vengeance and survival while simultaneously delivering a ferocious dissection of gender and genre.R, 1 hr. 48 min. Action & Adventure, Mystery & Suspense
