Fewer Americans die of stroke now than even 15 years ago, according to mayoclinic.com. Up to 50 percent of all strokes are preventable. Risk factors include high blood

pressure, atrial fibrillation, uncontrolled diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, exces-sive alcohol intake, obesity, carotid or coronary artery disease. The most common type of stroke is an ischemic stroke, which is similar to a heart attack except it occurs in the blood vessels of the brain, ac-cording to webmd.com. Clots can form in the brain’s blood vessels, in blood vessels lead-ing to the brain and elsewhere in the body and then traveling to the brain, blocking blood flow. This type of stroke can also be caused by too much plaque that clogs the brain’s blood vessels. A hemorrhagic stroke oc-curs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures, resulting in blood seeping into brain

By Vera [email protected] Never take your eyesight for granted. And never wait to seek attention when some-thing starts to go bad because once it starts it only gets worse. At the beginning of this year, I started noticing that my right eye was getting just a tad bit cloudy. I didn’t think too much of it then, but as the months went by, it kept get-ting progressively worse, but it still was not bad. I could still work and drive my car. Being the procrastinator that I am, I waited until late August to see an eye doctor. That’s because the cloudiness in my right eye accelerated very quickly and in a three-week period, I was almost completely blind in that eye. To give an example, if you

Turns out, I had an ad-vanced cataract in my right eye and one forming in my left eye. Only surgery was going to fix this. My pre-surgery ap-p o i n t m e n t i n v o l v e d gett ing al l of the meas-urements re-quired and selecting the level of sightedness I was comfort-able with. I was somewhat surprised to be asked if I still wanted to be nearsighted after surgery. Huh? That’s like asking if I

still want to be overweight after liposuction. Anyway, I chose the less expensive ‘still nearsighted’ option. Eyeglasses would fix that and I decided since I’ve been

wearing glass-es my entire life, why stop now. Once my share of this s u rg e r y i s paid for I’ll just get a few more pairs of snappy look-ing glasses and make it a

new fashion statement. Anyway, my surgery took place the morning of Sept. 7. From the time I went in until the time I left was just under an hour. The majority of that time was pre-surgery preparation.

The surgery itself took only about 15 minutes. Part of the pre-surgery preparation was getting set up with an IV drip for something to ‘relax’ me during surgery. Boy, did it! While my eye was being worked on I could see what I can only describe as a lava lamp with kaleidoscope-like colors floating around everywhere. Something I didn’t expect was the surgeon issuing in-structions like ‘Look to the left, look up, look to the right.’ With that ‘relaxing’ drip run-ning through me, following orders was a bit difficult, but not impossible. When I have my left eye done after the first of the year, I think I’ll ask them to go easy on the IV ‘juice.’ After surgery, I was amazed

Acute pain is a normal sensation triggered in the nervous system to alert you to possible injury and the need to take care of yourself. It might be mild and last just

a moment, or it might be severe and last for weeks or months. Typically, it disappears when the underlying cause of pain has been treated or healed, and usually doesn’t last more than six months. Unrelieved acute pain, however, might lead to chronic pain. Chronic pain is different in that it persists over time. Common chronic pain complaints include headache, low back pain, cancer pain, arthritis pain, neurogenic pain (damage to the peripheral nerves or central nervous system). Chronic pain is the most common cause of long-term disability and a major contributor to health care costs. Pain affects more Americans than diabetes,

cancers that will claim the lives of 50,000 Americans each year. Colon cancer almost always begins as abnormal growths called polyps, which can be detected and removed during a colonoscopy, dramatically lowering your risk of developing the disease. Two of TV’s “The Doctors,” Jim Sears, MD and Travis Stork, MD, underwent colonoscopies on the air and share these tips about their

experience. “It’s no worse than a visit to the dentist” The worst part, they said, is just booking the appointment and undergoing the prep — drinking certain fluids or taking pills to flush out your system so the doctor can see every nook and cranny of your colon. It feels like a cleanse, a day of not putting junk in your gut, they said. “You feel fine? That’s the perfect time to be tested” It’s most important to have a colonoscopy to find polyps before they turn cancerous. “Ask two key questions” Not all doctors perform colonoscopies equally well. A not-so-thorough procedure may miss polyps or lead to complications, like a tear in the bowel. Ask the doctor about:• The “adenoma detection rate” — the percentage of patients in who he finds

precancerous polyps (an ideal number is at least 15 percent for women and 25 percent for men. If he doesn’t know, ask him:• How many procedures he performs each day. More than one and less than 20 is a good number. “Split your prep time” Taking half the preparation the evening before and half the morning of the procedure is becoming more common. Research shows this method clears the bowels more effectively. “Constipated? Modify your diet a few days before” Most patients start a clear liquid diet the morning of the day before a colonoscopy. But if you’re prone to constipation, your doctor may recommend a liquid diet for an extra day and a low-fiber diet for up to a week before. “Request de-bloating”
