This Memorial Day, add your remembrance of thoseunsung men and their sacrifices to your agenda for the long weekend.

May has come and it makesme stop and considerMemorial Day and what itmeans. Memorial Day beganas Decoration Day,commemorating those menand women who have died inthe service of our country.

Following the Civil War, theday was set aside by manyUnion communities as a dayto mark the end of the war oras a memorial to those whohad died. The alternativename of "Memorial Day" wasfirst used in 1882. It did notbecome more common untilafter World War II, and wasnot declared the official nameby Federal law until 1967.

I remember going to the localcemetery in my home townback in Indiana and seeing theflags placed beside the gravesof local veterans going back tothe Civil War. Some of themhad Masonic markers, and I

So many of our Brothers havedistinguished themselves inthe service to our country.Books have been filled withtheir names, stories andexploits. There are so manythat it would be impossible tolist them all. Othersperformed their service inanonymity, quietly doingtheir duty, unrecorded byhistorians. It is those men, those unrecorded heroes, who did their part andfulfilled their Masonicobligation to their country, sometimes offering their livesin that service, which thosetiny flags represent.

This Memorial Day, add yourremembrance of thoseunsung men and theirsacrifices to your agenda for

I think back on the men that

helped shape me and howmany of them were Masons. In their own way, they laidthe foundation for the man Iwas to become. Most of them were veterans; most of them have a small flag flyingnext to their grave, and all ofthem have a special place inmy heart. Ill take a fewmoments and honor theirmemory on Memorial Day,but deep inside I carry themwith me always. After all, they were the builders of myMasonic foundation.

This month promises to be a verybusy time, as summer approachesand while temperatures remainfairly reasonable to the majority of us at least. Time to get out and seethe beauty of this austere

environment we all must love, anddo it before temperatures begin tosoar into that "but its a dry heat"range.

For those who are curious aboutmy absence from lodge activities, work has been keeping me on theroad quite a bit these past couplemonths and it continues into this

month as well. I will miss theLodge Breakfast this monthbecause I will be attending theSenior Wardens Retreat in

Ontario that weekend.Immediately after that is over Imscheduled to head out again foranother week unless the schedulechanges. Things are supposed totaper off for a while afterwards, and Im looking forward to a bit of down time at home and more timeat the lodge.

May 9 th is Mothers Day; dontforget, because she wont!

May 16 th Yucca Valley Lodge willcelebrate an event half a century inthe making, our 50 th Anniversary, and event which marks us as avery young lodge, as MasonicLodges go. Mark your calendars, buy your tickets, and comecelebrate this once in a lifetime

event. I hope to see everyonethere.

May 31 st is Memorial Day, formany of us a day to celebrate theunofficial beginning of summer, but most importantly its a dayset aside to remember themilitary men and women whosacrificed everything in the nameof freedom. Take time toremember them, whatever yourother activities are that day, andif you happen to meet a Veteran,or member of the military thank them for doing what they do, thesimple gesture will mean a lot.Check the Lodge calendar formore events and take part in asmany as you are able, there'ssomething for everyone and if you notice that something ismissing, help us set it up.

The Friend to Friend MasonicMemorial is a monument located in theannex of the Gettysburg NationalCemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.Built by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, it commemorates

Confederate Brigadier General LewisAddison Armistead entrusting UnionCaptain Henry H. Bingham with hispersonal effects, most notably apocket watch, on the third day of theBattle of Gettysburg, during Pickett'sCharge.

Confederate general Armistead, under George Pickett's command,

personally led his men up the hill tothe Union position. Armistead wasshot twice. Severely wounded, andfearing that his personal effects wouldbe stolen by Union soldiers, he "gavea Masonic sign asking for assistance".Union Captain Bingham, an aide toMajor General Winfield ScottHancock, a personal friend of

Armistead, then came to his aid as helay wounded: Armistead, Bingham, and Hancock were all Freemasons. After ensuring Armistead that hispossessions would be sent to hisfamily, particularly his pocket watch,Bingham took Armistead to a fieldhospital, where Armistead once againmet Hancock, who had beenpreviously injured the same day.Armistead died two days later at ahospital on the George Spanglerfarm.

The monument's sculptor was RonTunison of Cairo, New York, whowas himself a Freemason. The statuewas dedicated by the Grand Lodge ofPennsylvania on August 21, 1993.

On Thursday, April 22, Yucca Valley Lodgepresented its annual Public Schools Night, which honors students from the MorongoUnified School District selected by theirrespective schools for outstanding citizenship. The history of Public Schools Night comesfrom the history shared by the CaliforniaPublic School System and the Freemasons.

The California State public school system wasstarted in the 1 850s, and the first StateSuperintendent of Public Instruction was JohnSwett, a transplanted Mason. The publicschools have always been a special concern of California Masons. In 1920, the GrandMaster issued a proclamation declaring PublicSchools Week and committing Masons toassisting public schools in whatever way theycould, because the children are our future.

Yucca Valley Lodge honors the public schoolsthrough this annual celebration. BrotherHarry Tanzer has been the force behind thecelebration since 1988 and once again did asuperb job. Forty students from five localschools were honored with framed certificatesin front of a full hall, filled with families andfriends. The Worshipful Master, JosephRomero opened the ceremony and turned it

over to Brother Tanzer, who spoke eloquentlyon the history of the Masonic Lodge and thepartnership between this Lodge and theMUSD.

The evening ended with refreshments andcamaraderie. Special thanks go out to TinaBergamin and Patty Aston for setting up andhosting the refreshments!

Famous Mason: John Wayne, American Born Marion Morrison, "the Duke"appeared or starred in over 200films in his fifty-year career, winning an Oscar for "True Grit,"in 1969.One of the most popular filmactors of the twentieth century,John Wayne remains a popularAmerican icon to this day.Remembered for his definition of the American individualist of amythical wild west, he came torepresent America to severalgenerations of movie-goers.

For nearly a decade, Wayne toiled

in numerous B movies (mostlywesterns) for different studios. Heeven played a singing cowboynamed Sandy Saunders among hismany roles. During this timeperiod, however, Wayne starteddeveloping his man of actionpersona, which would serve as thebasis of many popular characterslater on.

Wayne's career as an actor took another leap forward when heworked with director HowardHawks in Red River (1948). Thewestern drama provided Waynewith an opportunity to show histalents as an actor, not just an

action hero. Also around thistime, Wayne received praise forhis work in John Ford's Fort

Apache (1948) with Henry Fondaand Shirley Temple.Taking on a war drama, Waynegave a strong performance inSands of Iwo Jima (1949), whichgarnered him his first AcademyAward nomination for BestActor. He also appeared in moretwo westerns by Ford nowconsidered classics: She Wore aYellow Ribbon (1949) and RioGrande (1950) with MaureenO'Hara. Wayne worked withO'Hara on several films, perhapsmost notably The Quiet Man (1952). This film is consideredWayne's most convincing leadingromantic role by many critics.

Wayne portrayed an aginggunfighter dying of cancer in hisfinal film, The Shootist (1976),with Jimmy Stewart and LaurenBacall. In 1978, life imitated artwith Wayne being diagnosed with

stomach cancer.Wayne died on June 11, 1979, inLos Angeles, California. He wassurvived by his seven childrenfrom two of his three marriages.
