Masonic Education buildsthe foundation for a solidand rewarding career inFreemasonry.
Public Schools
This month celebrates public
schools and Freemasonry.Public schools are thefoundation of the educationalsystem in the United States.Just as the schools build afoundation for schools,Masonic education builds thefoundation for a solid andrewarding career inFreemasonry. While I dontnecessarily agree with theexact wording of the Grand
Masters proclamation onpage five regarding the firstnecessity of a progressiveState, which in all fairnesshas been used since the firstCalifornia proclamation in1920, I do believe that publicschools are the right choice forthe majority of our citizens.
One thing I learned whileresearching this topic was thatMasonic Lodges, at one time, even started/sponsored theirown schools and colleges. After the public schoolsbecame government funded,

Freemasonry is an individually-driven
science of self development in theursuit of the ideal.
No one takes a new Mason aside and
hands them all the secrets ofFreemasonry after attaining the MasterMason degree. Each Mason is free toevolve as they deem fit. Some will behappy with what they have heard in thelectures of the degrees and to just jointhe fraternity. Others will seek more, depending on their needs. To reallyunderstand, a Mason must be compelledto put forth a personal effort. No man

Masonic EducationWorking Group
The Masonic EducationWorking Group met lastmonth for the first time, and Iwas very pleased at thereception and attendance forthe group. We began by
looking at the Mission andVision of the Lodge, discussed our personalvisions, and spoke on what ismeant by A BeautifulSystem of Morality, Veiled inAllegory, and Illustrated bySymbols. As the MEWG
continues, we will explore thesymbols, what they mean tothe individual Mason, andhow the lessons can be
applied to our lives. In thatway, perhaps we can learnmore about taking a good
man and making him better.
We will be meeting at leaevery third Thursday at thLodge, and then any otheThursday that the brethrewish to continue the studMy hope is that the studiewill then be shared with trest of the Lodge in StateMeetings, through ShortTalks and papers by the
members of the Group. I especially pleased to see the group had members fall age groups, andparticularly pleased to knthat YV Lodge brothers ainterested in the deeperaspects of Masonry.
If you are of the mindset there is more to being aLodge member than dinnbusiness meetings, and

can become a champion boxer frommerely reading a book on the gentle art.Personal effort is necessary, and that isust where people fail by the thousands,
and that is a failure of Leadership.
The Working Group will focus on thosewho wish to expand their understandingof the Craft and apply that knowledge totheir lives.
The basic format of this group is that ofthe Socratic method of instruction. Eachindividual will determine their needs andseek the guidance of the other members, read background materials, and
subsequently share what they learnwith the rest of the group. By dointhis, members are not dependentupon classroom instruction andlistening to lectures. The surest wa
to fully learn a subject is to discusswith others and defend your researcand opinion.
Each WG member needs to examintheir own history and understand threason why they sought outmembership in Freemasonry. Fromthat we develop a mission and visiofor their individual studies.

Last Night I knelt Where
Hiram Knelt
Last night I knelt where Hiram kneltAnd took an obligationToday Im closer to my GodAnd Im a Master Mason
Tho Heretofore my fellow menSeemed each one like the otherToday I search each one apartIm looking for My Brother
And, as I feel his friendly gripIt fills my heart with prideI know that while Im on the squareThat he is on my side
His footsteps on my errand goIf I should such requireHis prayers will plead on my behalfIf I should so desire
My words are safe within his breastAs though within my own
His hand for ever at my backTo help me safely home
Good counsel whispers in my earAnd warns of any dangerBy square and compass Brother NowWho once would call me stranger
I might have lived a moral lifeAnd risen to distinctionsWithout my Brothers helping handAnd fellowship of masons
But God who knows how hard it isTo resist lifes temptationsKnows why I knelt where Hiram kneltAnd Took that Obligation

The Working Tools
of a Golfer
I now present you with the workingtools of a Golfer, which are theDriver, the Iron, the Putter and theScore Card. The Driver is to drive theball, the Iron is to aid its progress andthe Putter is to enable us to followthat straight and undeviating line laiddown for our pursuit, and finally toplace the ball in its safe and hiddenrepository over the smooth andprepared surface of the green, whileupon the Score-card are recorded theefforts of the Golfer to mark hisprogress in the science.
But as we are not professionalgolfers, but rather amateurs we applythese tools to our morals in this sense. The Driver denotes the force ofconscience, which should keep downall vain and unbecoming thoughts, which might infringe during theperiod of time in which we occupythe tee. The Iron, an importantimplement of the Science and solid inits form, teaches us that exertion isnecessary to success. We are
reminded that no game of golf can becompleted without its aid and to sohigh an eminence has its usefulness
been raised, that Monarchs
themselves have not felt it derogatoryto their dignity to exchange the
scepter for it. The Putter instructs uto be accurate, and to temper ourefforts with restraint, while theScorecard teaches us that our wordand actions are observed andrecorded by the All PowerfulHandicap Committee to whom wemust render an account of ourconduct. It reminds us of theirunerring and impartial justice in
allocating to us our positions in allClub Competitions and also we shabe rewarded or punished as we havobeyed or disregarded theircommands.
From the whole we receive thisteaching, that skill aided by exertioand exercised with patiencecombined with a strict adherence tothe principles laid down for ourguidance in the Volume of the Law
of the Game, will enable us, whensummoned from the course to appebefore the Club Committee to do sowith the knowledge that we haveendeavored to faithfully follow theprecepts inculcated in the Lecturesreceived from the skilledprofessional.

Traditionally, throughout its longhistory, Freemasonry has taken aleading role in the promotion oflearning and education. From itsearly beginnings, in the 18th centuryin England and Scotland, Masonswere among the founders of learnedacademies. Masons have been activein education at every level fromgrammar school through university.Freemasons have even foundedschools and colleges in the past.
The Charge of the FellowcraftDegree reminds the candidate that
the impressive ceremonies of thedegree are calculated to inculcate inhis mind the importance of studyingthe liberal arts and sciences. He isparticularly reminded to study thenoble science of Geometry, whichforms the basis of Freemasonry. Notonly does Geometry explain theproperties of nature, it demonstratesthe more important truths ofmorality.
If Freemasonry is about anything,it is about the education of theindividual to become aknowledgeable, informed, and moralhuman being within society.Education is valued above ignorance.Seeking further Light in Masonrymeans more than learning moreabout the Craft. It also means thatFreemasons and non-Masons alikemust discipline themselves to seek
knowledge through whatever meansavailableby studying at collegesand universities or by self-directedreading and study.
Because Freemasonry places suchgreat importance on education, wehave become steadfast supporters ofthe Public Schools. Horace Mann,
Masonic Education: Freemasonry and Public Education
the father of our present system ofpublic schools and purported Mason, wrote that the object of a free publicschools system is to give everychild a free, straight, solid pathwayby which he can walk directly upfrom the ignorance of an infant to aknowledge of the primary duties of aman. The same can, of course, besaid about the progress of acandidate through the three MasonicDegrees, from Apprentice, toFellowcraft, to Master Mason.Freemasonry and the public schoolsshare several important values.
Our Founding Fathers, Freemasonand non-Mason alike, understoodthat eternal vigilance is the price offreedom. And vigilance requires aneducated population equipped withthe skills to learn about and discussthe great issues. The NorthwestOrdinance of 1787 was one of thegreatest accomplishments of theinfant United States. Under its
regulations, Congress set aside asection in each township in the oldNorthwest Territory (Ohio, Indiana, etc) for the support of publicschools. This was the first time inhistory that a government had theforesight to plan for the education ofits people. Since that time, theindividual States and now theFederal Government have supportedand developed our system of free
public education. The California State public schoolsystem was started in the 1850s, and
the first State Superintendent ofPublic Instruction was John Swett, atransplanted Mason who had comewest in the years following the GoldRush. The public schools havealways been a special concern of
California Masons. Charles AlbeAdams, Grand Master in 1920,wrote that as Masons we subscrito the belief that an enlightenedcitizenship is the first great care oprogressive State. He believed tthe future of our free republicdepended on the quality of ourpublic schools.
Freemasonry and education remaclosely related in the world at largas well. The modern world isconfronted with poverty and itseffects; religious and political
fundamentalism; and overpopulatThe fight against bigotry andfanaticism must be fought in theminds of men. Education is the kto the solution of the worldsproblems in these presentcircumstances. An educated manlearns to appreciate the wide rangopinions on any subject.Freemasonry, in addition, allowsmen of many different profession
and backgrounds to meet togethera spirit of cooperation andunderstanding.
All of Freemasonrys principles aideals are worthless, unless they ainculcated in the minds of eachMason by education within ourLodges. Our fundamental principare called landmarks because th
are signposts. They are notconstraints. Freemasonry is not
restricted to what goes on in theLodge room. It has to become a wof life in order for the new Masonbecome a true and full-fledgedMason. The threefold orientationMasonic work for the candidate itoward himself, toward hisBrethren, and toward the world atlarge.
