UCLAFree, drop-in mindful meditation at UCLA Medical Center

To help reduce the stress of everyday life, UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica, is host-ing weekly, half-hour meditation sessions on Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m.

The guided meditations, open to the public, are led by trained facilitators of the UCLAMindful Awareness Research Center, recognized as one of the nation’s premier programsin mindfulness research and practice.

Mindful awareness is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observ-ing one’s physical, mental and emotional experiences. It has scientific support as ameans to reduce stress, improve attention, boost the immune system, reduce emotionalreactivity, and promote a general sense of health and well-being.

“Mindful awareness allows us to experience the present moment with an openness, curiosity and a willingness to be with what is,” says Diana Winston, director of the pro-gram. “It’s an excellent antidote to the stresses of every day and invites us to stop, breathe, observe and connect with one’s inner experience.”

The drop-in sessions are held in the ground-floor Conference Center at the medicalcenter, 1250 16th Street, Santa Monica. No reservations needed. For information only, call (800) 516-5323. To learn more about the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center, visit http://marc.ucla.edu/

    — SUBMITTED BY SIMI SINGER, MARKETING AND MEDIA RELATIONS ANALYSTCitywideLA 2024 pledges “Transformative Games” in first presentation to Olympic family

LA 2024 made its first presentation to the Olympic family this month, pledging to the1,000-plus delegates at the Association of National Olympic Committees [ANOC]General Assembly a “Transformative Games” to guarantee greater sustainability andyouth connection for future Games.

Echoing IOC President Thomas Bach's comments at the General Assembly, the IOC'sOlympic Agenda 2020 reforms supporting fiscally responsible bids have encouraged theCity of Los Angeles to support its bid for the 2024 Games.

The presentation in Doha featured remarks by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, theonly female track-and-field athlete in Olympic history to win six gold medals, AllysonFelix, LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman, LA 2024 Vice Chair and Director of AthleteRelations Janet Evans and two US IOC Members – IOC Executive Board Member AngelaRuggiero and USOC Chairman Larry Probst. All speakers are Californians.

Mayor Garcetti set out LA 2024’s commitment not just to hosting an outstandingOlympic and Paralympic Games in 2024, but also to ensuring future success and relevan-cy for the Olympic Movement. He said: “We believe our campaign isn’t just about theGames in our city in 2024. We believe this bid is about ensuring that the Games are sus-tainable and relevant in every year beyond 2024 as well. This bid isn’t only about LA’sfuture – it’s about our collective future. We are planning a great Games in Los Angeles –make no mistake – but we’re also laying the ground work along with you for future Games.

“We know that LA 2024 must not only deliver great Games, they must also delivertransformative Games. And we know that we can help transform the Games because weare a transformative city that reflects creativity and innovation – and because theOlympics are in our DNA.”

Mayor Garcetti went on to describe how ensuring America “remains actively engaged inthe world” was a core motivation behind LA 2024’s mission to bring the Games to the UnitedStates for the first time in a generation. He said: “I see an America that is outward-looking,ready to play its role alongside the community of nations to address our world’s most press-ing challenges. Choose LA2024 and help us show a new generation of Americans that ourstrength is being with the world, not turning our backs to it. I believe the Olympic andParalympic Games are the light we are seeking and that we must look to follow.”

Six-time Olympic champion sprinter Allyson Felix stressed why the diversity ofAmerica and LA in particular makes the City of Angels perfectly placed to welcome – andbenefit from – the world’s greatest celebration of unity in diversity: “I want to tell youabout the America that I love, and the America that needs the Games to help make ournation better – now more than ever. America is diverse. We are a nation of people whosedescendants came from all over the world for a better life. We’re not a nation that clingsto our past, no matter how glorious or how painful. Americans rush towards the future.

“Please don't doubt us. America’s diversity is our greatest strength. Diversity is noteasy. Diversity is a leap of faith that embraces all faiths. And that’s why I believe LA is aperfect choice for the 2024 Games, because the face of our city reflects the face of theOlympic Movement itself.”

LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman pledged to “re-engage a new generation ofAmericans with the Olympic Movement”, drawing on the “future-focused culture of aspecial place called ‘California’” to connect with the nation’s 100 million young people.Janet Evans announced LA 2024’s commitment to establishing an Olympic VillageCouncil in partnership with the International Olympic Committee and ANOC, to ensurethe existing state-of-the-art facilities at the UCLA campus provide the “most personal-ized ever” Games-time experience for the athletes of the world. “LA 2024 is the rightbid, at the right place, at the right time,” Evans said.

USOC Chairman Larry Probst pledged to build on America’s “enduring engagementwith and support of many NOCs around the world”, including programs which saw 576Olympians from 103 NOCs train at universities in the United States and win 58 medalsfor their home countries. “Imagine how much more we can achieve together if LA is for-tunate enough to host the 2024 Games,” Probst said. “This is [the United States’] thirdattempt to host the Olympic Games in the past ten years [and] this is the most remark-able US bid I have ever seen. We have learned many lessons from our previous bids.”

Newly elected IOC Athletes’ Commission Chair Angela Ruggiero highlighted the cer-tainty that underpins LA 2024’s vision of transformative Games: “We are not changingour city to fit the Games, we are adapting the Games Concept to fit our city – and that istrue innovation. If you believe in Olympic Agenda 2020, then you have to believe in LA2024’s Concept.”

Dear EarthTalk: Any tips for how to make my

Thanksgiving greener and less wasteful thisyear?

    Melissa WBoston, MA

Ah, Thanksgiving! For many of us, it’sthe favorite holiday because it revolvesaround togetherness and inclusiveness andpreparing and eating our favorite foods—and usually doesn’t include any overt com-mercialism. But just because you don’t haveto buy and wrap gifts doesn’t meanThanksgiving is necessarily green, althoughthere are lots of little things you can do tomake it more that way.

Menu planning is a good place to start.Hard core environmentalists would gomeatless, of course, given the greenhouse gasand natural resource burden of raising live-stock, not to mention animal cruelty. Thenon-profit farm animal advocacy group,Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM),suggests swapping out the turkey with some-thing meatless like Turtle Island Foods’Tofurky, a pre-cooked tofu-wheat proteinblend, Field Roast’s vegetable-basedCelebration Roast, or Gardein’s VeggieTurkey Breast.

For the rest of us who are still eating meatand can’t celebrate Thanksgiving withoutsome real turkey or tenderloin, just eat lessof it and fill up your plate with other healthyvegetable-based sides.

If you’re vegetarian or vegan and goingto someone else’s house for Thanksgiving,FARM says to let your host know you don’teat animal products ahead of time: “Youcan help by asking what you can bring andhow you can help prepare the meal.” Go toFARM’s Compassionate Holidays websiteto download one or more of the group’sholiday-worthy recipes (old-fashionedstuffing, green bean casserole, vegan gravy, creamy mashed potatoes, pumpkin pieand cranberry sauce)—all free of animalproducts.

Another way to reduce the environmentalimpact of your Thanksgiving is to shoplocally (to reduce the “food miles” and car-

bon footprint of your dinner) and stick toorganic foods (which don’t require harmfulpesticides and herbicides to grow). TheNature Conservancy suggests doing as muchshopping as possible at local farmers mar-kets and farms: “The plus for you is thatlocal fruits and veggies usually taste betterbecause they’ve been picked at the peak offreshness, rather than shipped from thou-sands of miles away” and picked beforeripening. Finding foods grown sustainablyand locally is as easy as steering your webbrowser to the LocalHarvest.org website andzeroing in on your region on the searchablelocal foods map.

And then there’s the issue of waste. WhileThanksgiving might not be as much of aretail packaging waste nightmare asChristmas, it more than makes up for that inits abundant amounts of food-related waste.Earth911 suggests buying food in bulk ifyou’re hosting a large crowd so as to reducepackaging waste while saving money—andto bring your own reusable shopping bags tothe grocery store so you aren’t reliant on dis-posable paper or plastic bags. Meanwhile,Harvard University’s Office of Sustainabilitysays that cutting disposable dinnerware, glasses and napkins will also eliminate con-siderable amounts of waste.

Thanksgiving is a good reminder that weall have a lot to be thankful for, and it onlymakes sense to show your gratitude to theenvironment by honoring nature as much aspossible—before, during and after yourThanksgiving celebration.

Thursday, November 24, 2016 tion of ‘This is Hunger’ to today. It is a hugeundertaking and we ultimately want thisexperience to be both an immediate impactalong with a lasting impact.”

MAZON, is a national nonprofit organi-zation began 30 years ago. Till this day theywork to end hunger in the United States andIsrael. One of their key strategies is to edu-cate its synagogue partners and the largerJewish community about hunger and engag-ing at the state and federal level to ensurethat people have access to nutritious food.

‘This is Hunger’ is open to people of allfaiths and backgrounds. Also hoping toinform and educate people all across thecountry about the shocking statistics of howmany people go hungry.

In 2015, an estimated 42.2 millionAmericans lived in a hood insecure house-hold, including 29.1 million adults and 13.1million children. This information wastaken from Feeding Americas’ website.

Food insecurity refers to USDA’s measureof lack of access at times to enough food foractive, healthy life for all household mem-bers and limited or uncertain availability ofnutritionally adequate foods.

MAZON wants to mobilize the Jewishcommunity to take action to end hunger.

When people enter the parked vehiclethey go on a journey that could change theirviews about the people who struggle withhunger. Inside people sit around a long

wooden table sharing their stories and strug-gles they face.

This is an experiential installation onwheels. The exhibit has two modes, allowingpeople to choose a 45-minute experience ora shorter 20 to 30 minute experience. Thehope of the exhibit is to encourage people toraise their voice for the millions ofAmericans who go hungry everyday.

“I want people to feel the reality of foodinsecurity. These stories they hear are fromactual human beings. The statistics are sohigh, and shocking people need to know,”said Leibman. “I want people to feel engagedand to help people move out of food insecu-rity systems and move forward to into selfsufficient way of life.”

‘This is Hunger’ is starting their tour inthe Greater Los Angeles area and it may bedue to the hunger statistics in the LosAngeles County. In 2014 Los AngelesCounty had 1,393,170 food insecure people, again provided by Feeding America.

‘This is Hunger’ launched their debut inCulver City on Nov.16 and will continue tostay in the Great Los Angeles area. They willbe at Santa Monica College Nov.23 – Dec.1The exhibit is completely free, but reserva-tions are recommended.

‘This is Hunger’ will depart SouthernCalifornia Dec.18. They will begin to travelthe country, making stops in Tucson, Dallas,Baltimore, New York City, and many more.

    Leafblowers out of controlEditor:

I hope the SMDP will publish my letter below, and hope the city council takes actionto more fully enforce the leaf blower ban that voters enacted years ago.

Every single day I witness not just one or two violators of the leaf blower ban in SantaMonica, but at least 5-10 violators on my morning rounds around town. I am sick of it. Notonly does my car get unnecessarily dirty at the hands of the culprits, but the dust trav-els onto everything in its path. These violators seem to think there is nothing wrong withblowing away top soil from gardens and blowing dirt onto neighboring properties. It is amajor violation of health and pollution of other people's properties.

Citizens of Santa Monica helped pass this law, but for some reason, citizens have tojump through hoops to get code enforcement to take action. It just should not be this way.I know code enforcement is doing their best, but they need additional help, in my opinion.

I think the patrol officers, parking enforcement, and other city officials should stop togive warnings to first time offenders, and give expensive tickets to those who are on thelist of having been warned. I believe there should be a database of gardeners vehiclelicense plates, as well as names of gardeners taken from their photo identifications, thatcan all be cross referenced every time there is an enforcement action taken, so repeatviolators can be fined or banned from operating in the city.

To think that violators of this ban do now know the law exists is ludicrous. They allknow! They snub their nose at us Santa Monicans. We should no longer take it.

I am calling on the city council to change the process of reporting, to using the policeand other city workers who drive around town, to be part of the enforcement action, rather than just driving by. When police cars and park rangers, etc. drive by leaf blowerviolators without taking sends a signal that it is okay to violate our laws and there is noconsequence. This must change.

    Regards,Dan Stevens

ideas."Here Yip and two other designers —

Maxwell Ryan, founder of apartmentthera-py.com, and crafter Lia Griffith of liagrif-fith.com — offer advice on creating a mem-orable Thanksgiving table.

BRING NATURE INSummer's blooms may be a distant mem-

ory, but nature can still brighten up yourtable. Go outside and see what's available, says Ryan: Collect pine cones, berries, vinesand anything else that strikes you as beauti-ful. Cluster them on the table in differentways, adding other natural items like squashor pumpkins to the mix.

Another natural touch: "Scoop out themiddle of an apple in the same shape as avotive," Ryan says, and then tuck a votivecandle into it. Do this with a half-dozenapples arranged on a dish, then light them. The candle flame warms the apples, releas-ing their sweet scent. As long as the top ofthe candle extends a few centimeters abovethe edge of the apple, the tiny flame remainsa safe distance from the apple.

Yip suggests lining up tiny topiaries downthe center of the table. He asks guests inadvance what their wish is for the comingyear or what they're thankful for, and thenhe writes those words on tiny paper tagsattached to the topiaries. This gets gueststalking about what's meaningful to themthis Thanksgiving.

Amid all this natural greenery, Griffithpoints out that you can mix in paper flowers tocreate a striking centerpiece or napkin rings.

She also suggests cutting an image of abare tree out of butcher paper and hangingit on the wall. Cut leaves out of coloredpaper, have kids (or grownups) write whatthey're thankful for this year and paste theleaves on the tree branches. (You can findtemplates for the leaves at liagriffith.com.)

FEATURE THE FOODThis year, try adding hand-written or

typed paper flags or labels to your serving

dishes, says Griffith. Beyond helping guestswith food sensitivities or allergies, this letsyou draw attention to the history of dishes, the relatives who made them and who con-tributed them this year.

Consider letting the food take center stageon Thanksgiving, skipping a traditional cen-terpiece. Try displaying the food at variousheights, says Ryan, by using cake stands orwide bowls overturned to serve as pedestals.

And don't keep dessert hidden.Thanksgiving desserts, he notes, tend to lookphenomenal.

"It's such a shame that these beautifulcakes and pies and cookies are kind of left inthe kitchen," he says. Displaying them oncake stands in place of flowers or other dec-orations lets guests enjoy their sight andscent throughout the meal — and serves as areminder to save room for dessert.

Just be sure, Yip says, that nothing on thetable is so tall that it blocks the view ofother guests.

TRY FRESH COLORSIf your usual Thanksgiving palette is

browns and oranges, try something new thisyear: Griffith suggests dressing your table insoft shades of purple with accents of metal-lic copper and gold.

"The metallic trend is so hot right now,"she says, and the warm beauty of purple is astriking backdrop for white china.

CONVERSATION STARTERSYip likes to ask guests before

Thanksgiving to tell him something specialabout themselves, and then use that to per-sonalize the table. For instance, he might askeveryone to name one place in the worldthey've always wanted to visit. Then heorders postcards (Yip says they're easilyavailable online) to decorate each place set-ting. Guests can find their seat based on thedestination, and talk with other guests abouttheir choices.

Or ask everyone for the title of a favoritebook, and then place those books on thetable in stacks or on each napkin. Each guestcan explain why that book resonated withthem, and each can go home with a recom-mended book.

    SOLUTIONS TO YESTERDAY’S CROSSWORD

Sum Body■ Three things in your body longerthan you are tall.■ 1. Your small intestine is roughly 18 to 23 feet

in length. "Small" refers to its diameter, about 1

inch. The large intestine is wider -- 3 inches --

but shorter in length at about five feet. The

small intestine is tasked with absorbing most of

the nutrients from the food we consume. The

large intestine extracts water and creates

    stools for defecation.

    ■ 2. Your circulatory system -- all of the

    arteries, veins and capillaries transporting

blood throughout the body -- adds up to

roughly 60,000 miles of tubing if laid end

    to end.

    ■ 3. Your DNA stretches out roughly six feet.

Every cell nucleus in your body is packed with

six feet of DNA. If you uncoiled all of the DNA

from all of the cells in your body and tied the

strands together, it would stretch 10 billion

miles, from the Earth to Pluto and back.

The assumptions we make can be dangerously incorrect, yet there are times when we don't have the lux-ury of knowing for sure or being in a position to test every premise. As the sun moves from truthfulScorpio into hopeful Sagittarius, you err on the side of optimism, thinking you might be wrong but youwon't be sorry.

    Solar Shift to Optimism

ARIES (March 21-April 19)You're persuasive, mainly because you don'tseem to care whether they follow your lead ornot. You're doing it for your own curiosity, improvement and pleasure. They'll followbecause you make it look like such a good idea.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)You can mind your own business with the bestof 'em, but of course you're not going to dothat in the instance where harm could come tothe defenseless. It is in everyone's best inter-est to look out for general public welfare.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21)If it's not working for you, be bold enough toask for a change. Today is filled with potentialin the form of creative tools and flexiblearrangements. You can truly design your timeas you wish.

CANCER (June 22-July 22)You're all for representing the real you, butwhich one? The wise adjust to bring the per-sonality and approach that are most appropri-ate to the situation. Today's success dependson bringing the right "you" to the moment.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)Not everyone requires the same amount ofaffection, and certainly different people preferlove to be displayed in different ways. You're insuch a lucky cycle now to be able to give andreceive with mutually satisfying results.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)You have no idea how your supportive encour-agement will make someone's day better. Yoursign mate Mother Teresa said, "Kind words canbe short and easy to speak, but their echoesare truly endless."

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23)You often grow in indirect ways, mostly byhelping others get where they want to be. Justdon't wait until everyone around you is per-fectly squared away to invest in yourself, because that day may never come.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21)It's not too much to ask for someone to treatyou in the way you want to be treated. The per-son who made you feel that way was probablyjust ill-equipped for what you were asking.Keep trying new avenues.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)It's not what you say but how you say it -- withwarmth, charm, humility and simplicity. Thispromotes a certain feeling around you thatmakes people trust you and want to be nearyou.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)You're not sure what is stopping you fromgoing forward. Are you afraid? Is somethingrubbing you the wrong way? Is this just abouta mood? How frustrating. Reach out to a men-tor. It's an important case to crack.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)Usually, if you don't know how you're goingto complete it, you'll be tempted not totake it on in the first place. Today's oppor-tunity is different. You won't get one quitelike this again. It's worth a go, if only forthe novelty.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)It will feel as though everything you are doing, you are doing quite publicly. In a way, this willkeep you in check. You strive to exhibit gracein all things.

    TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Nov. 21)

You're starting to see a different future than you saw before, and new relationships will be a bigpart of it. A move energizes and educates you in February. You'll quickly decide what to do withsurprise money in April. The transformation in June happens as a result of modeling your inspira-tion and working hard. Aries and Virgo adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 4, 17, 20, 24 and 15.
