A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

WELCOMEFor me there is no better feeling than the one you get after a long day in the snow with your kids. Getting out and being active all day long can be the best way to relax and unwind as a family. Skiing down the slopes, building a snowman, tobogganing with the whole family or going dogsled riding will make sure that you sleep well at night and are ready for the same treat all over the next day.

Some of my favourite childhood memories are from the Norwegian fjäll and French alps, and eating a homemade sandwich with the family in the snow with the sun in my face will never get old.

Hope you have a great (cool) holiday.

Enjoy!

perisherNew South WalesBeing the largest ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere, Perisher has something for all ages and with four large ar-eas you won’t have to do the same run too often. Head to Smiggin Holes which has excellent terrain for beginners and families with a bowl where everyone returns to the same place when finishing their runs. It is also protected from the weather and has a good mix of restaurants for the kids get hungry. Pre-schoolers can join the Discovery Kids programme to get a great introduction to skiing or snow-boarding, before they advance to Perisher Kids to explore the mountain (and their own clubhouse). Did you know that about 70% of child restraints are not installed correctly? Protect your child by using the right child restraint or booster seat and using it correctly every trip.

To ensure that your child is safe, check that:

• the restraint is the right size for the child

• the child is securely placed in the restraint

• the restraint is correctly fitted to the vehicle

Using restraints getting it right every trip

A GUIDE TO KEEPING YOUR CHILD SAFE

Using restraints

A daily checkEach day check your restraint or booster seat to make sure it is safe.

CHILD RESTRAINTS – REARWARD AND FORWARD FACINGTwisted and loose harness Check the harness has no twists and is firm

Child’s arms out of harness Make sure your child’s arms are secured correctly in the harness straps

Seatbelt buckles undone Check the seatbelt buckles securing the restraint and the child are done up

Tether strap not being used correctly Ensure the top tether is appropriately attached to the correct child restraint anchor location

BOOSTER SEATSLoose and incorrectly fitted seatbelt Make sure the lap part of the seatbelt

passes over the upper thighs and across the hips – not the stomach area. Ensure the seatbelt is firmly fitted.

Seatbelt guide not being used Use the booster seatbelt guide to ensure the sash part of the seatbelt is positioned on your child’s shoulder

Tether strap not being used correctly If there is a top tether, ensure it is appropriately attached to the correct child restraint anchor location

Monthly tips for keeping your child safeCheck that the restraint is still the right size for your child:

Rearward facing child restraintsThe harness straps must be level with, or above your child’s shoulders. When your child has outgrown the highest slot they can be moved into a forward facing child restraint.

Forward facing child restraints The harness straps can be up to 25mm below the shoulders. If the straps are below this level they must be adjusted to a higher slot in the restraint. When your child has outgrown the highest slot you will need to assess their restraint needs. They will move into a larger forward facing child restraint with an inbuilt harness OR a booster seat. This will depend on your child’s size.

If your child is under four years old and has outgrown their forward facing child restraint it is recommended you seek expert advice.

Booster seatsA child should continue using a booster seat until they have outgrown it. An adult lap-sash seatbelt is designed for people with a minimum height of 145 cm.

If your child is under seven years old and has outgrown their booster seat it is recommended you seek expert advice.

Visit an RACV restraint fitting stationRACV recommends that you have your child restraint fitted at a child restraint fitting station. Visit racv.com.au to locate your nearest restraint fitter.

DUBAI - United Arab EmiratesSki DubaiSomehow it is no surprise that you can find a complete indoor snow resort in a mall in Dubai. Ski Dubai, the first indoor ski resort in the Middle East has amazing mountain-themed wintery setting, and you can enjoy skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, or just playing in the snow. Plus the kids will love to meet and play with Ski Dubai’s newest residents; the Snow Penguins!

COPENHAGEN - DENMARKAmagerforbrændingenHowever to people who know a little about Danish topography it should be a great surprise to find a skiing slope in the middle of the capitol. Very soon Copenhagen will have its very own down hill waste management facility where you can teach the kids to slalom while learning about recycling.

HAWAII - USAMauna KeaThere are no lifts, no grooming, no resort, and you need a 4-wheel drive to get to the summit. Skiers take turns picking up the others at the bottom and you can be sure that the “slopes” are not crowded. Also you can go see the Mauna Kea Observatories if you get tired of skiing.

Rustic Apple Tart Recipe

Tonight, some friends are coming around for dinner. With a sick kiddo to look after and looming work dead-lines, I wanted to make a meal that is low on fuss, big on comfort and damn tasty!

For dessert, I created this simple Rustic Apple Tart. It took no time to throw together (in fact, I made it while giving the kids their breakfast and telling Mabel to stop whinging!) and features in season, Jazz Apples, as the star ingredient.

PRODUCT REVIEW

Page 69: Travel Sprout Magazine - Issue #9 July 2015

69travelsprout.com.au

Product ReviewTravel Sprout Magazine has tested the Boken Everyday Bag. We asked our tester Emma from Melbourne a few questions ...

What is in your bag right now?Well, the usual stuff; nappies, wipes, baby cream, extra clothes and that sort of stuff. But I also have a few extra things for myself that I would normal-ly carry in my handbag - like my phone, keys, wal-let and other personal things.

Describe the bag to us?Well, it is one of those bags that always seem to have room for a bit more. There’s lot of room inside the bag, but there are also plenty of ex-tra space in the outside mesh and extra pockets which means that I can be a bit more organised.

What is your favourite thing about the bag?It would probably be that you can use it as a bag or a backpack depending on the situation. I love that I can throw it on my back if I need both hands to carry my child or push a stroller or things like that. Or that I can carry it like a normal bag if that suits me better.

What is your not-so-favourite thing about the bag?The only thing I can think of is the material it is made of. When the bag is not completely filled it gets a bit crinkly, but then again that rarely hap-pens and I think the material is part of the reason that the bag can hold so much stuff.
