It’s summertime—and here’s something to cool you down: A directory of all things good this part of the year. From enjoying time at a Swiss Alps resort 1,402 meters high to staying at a Four Seasons jungle tent in the Golden Triangle or hitting the Shangri-La greens in the Maldives, the options are all in place in this edition’s feature on “Summer Escapades.”

While at it, you may also want to watch Cirque du Soleil at The St. Regis Doha, or stay at the L’Amphitrite Palace in Morocco and Atlantis The Palm in Dubai, or dine al fresco at Le Grey’s stunning rooftop restaurant in Beirut.

Meantime, 15 years ago, the idea of promoting a summer shopping festival was thought to be ludicrous to say the least, for who would dare brave the scorching Arabian summer to go shopping? Last year, four million people did, according to Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment, which also noted that a total of US$2.4 billion was spent in retail purchases, travel and hotel stay for the duration of the five-week festival now popularly known as Dubai Summer Surprises.

DEPE said the four million was a six-fold increase from the first DSS, which means the idea was not that bad after all because as it appears, many people were already willing to brave the heat to shop at discounted rates and get chances to win prizes, even at a time when Dubai really didn’t have much exciting places to shop at.

Big on lobster ThermidorDear editor,As my work requires, I travel to Bahrain a lot; as my taste demands, I eat lobsters a lot. I browsed upon a piece in one of your edi-tions’ Taste Travel regarding Chef Olivier Catora’s signature dish at Sofitel Bahrain, his Lobster Thermidor, and thought it was interesting.

The guy’s creation sounds different and yummy—Szechuan pepper in risotto aspara-gus.I’d be in Bahrain in the coming weeks and will make sure I sample this.Gordon Allen-stoneJumeirah, Dubai, UAE

Maldives or bust!Dear editorEasily, the Maldives is becoming a resort favorite. Every hotel is there: Four Seasons, Anantara, Banyan Tree, and Sheraton to name a few.And now, Dusit Thani, as featured in your most recent issue. For us, the Maldives can be a choice consid-ering the relatively short flying time, there’s no visa requirement, the online reservation, actually the craze these days, and, of course, the stunning place.See you there?Amanda BreineDoha, Qatar

Pearl farmsDear editor,I commend the government for coming up with a program designed to instill awareness among visitors as well as the expat com-munity about the region’s once flourishing industry—pearl farming.

Dear Mr. GhaziNot a bad marketing plan to export natural pearls labeled “Made in the UAE.” Editor

That hit the spotMs. Ayesha Attique’s article published in your May 2012’s Special Feature section hit the spot, the point being it pays to preserve local culture and tradition in the face of rapid growth and modernization else we rise up on morning to see that everything’s gone.Laura PetersenLondon, England

THIS MONTH, READERS TAKE A BREAK, RElAX AND SPEAK OUT

This from Olivier Catora, the next guy to make your dining experience exciting.

Why this is so? Olivier, Chef de Cuisine at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa’s flagship restaurant La Mer, has some interesting cuts on cooking you may want to take home with you from the buffet.

“I couldn’t find in the restaurants what I wanted to eat,” he tells Travel Arabia matter-of-factly when asked why he chose a career in gastronomy while

some would take on other professions like lawyering, even as an astronaut or a city mayor.

The chef, who has been in the adver-tising world for 10 years before becoming a kitchen fixture, says this dual training has allowed him to create his own culi-nary identity. “In two words: Be different,” he says.

“How do you make a Lobster Ther-midor that is different from the classic Lobster Thermidor everyone knows and expects?

“Lobster Thermidor flavoured with Szechuan pepper in creamy risotto asparagus flavoured with truffle oil,” Chef Olivier says. This, by the way, is his signature menu of sort and is what his regular guests would always ask, accord-ing to him.

Thai, Moroccan and Italian cuisines are Chef Olivier’s influences. “Thai food (is about) the control of spices; Italian cuisine, the control of the generosity. Moroccan cuisine, the control of sweet and savoury,” he says, going further to cite as an example his Tom Khai soup with scallops and caviar on waffle with wasabi whipped cream.

“I like to surprise my customers and offer a unique cuisine. In general for every dish I prepare, I mix the textures. I appeal to the four senses: the sight, smell, hear-ing and taste; and I always integrate the five flavours: salty sweet, sour, bitter and spicy,” he says.

Chef Olivier loves to prepare seafood, to which La Mer is very popular for,

because “the creative and declination potential are infinite.”

The chef also agrees there still are more cuisines waiting to be discovered and preparations to be explored despite the modern culinary world having gone a long way.

“To cook is a question of personality. Each chef cooks with his sensibility (and) his technique.

With millions of ingredients (avail-able) the possibilities of new cuisines aren’t limited. That’s why this job is so exciting and always full of novelties,” he says.

At the day’s end, Chef Olivier says it will still be all about freshness. “If I have to talk about cuisines of the future, it can be summarized into these: freshness in products; freshness in the combination of flavours; freshness in the plating of the dishes.

“One thing the customers want is the respect of the food. They want to recog-nize the taste of the ingredients and be surprised by the combination of flavours. It’s basic but in recent years many chefs got lost in the technique and forgot that the main thing is the product.”

La Mer has a dual offering where cus-tomers can choose the dishes à la carte or have the chefs prepare according to their desires, “but always with our style,” says Chef Olivier, adding that customers can expect an overall experience because here they get to dine in special place and enjoy food they otherwise can’t find elsewhere in Bahrain.

9Tangalooma Island Resort on Moreton Island in Queensland Australia has a new-born dolphin it wants you to name in a contest where the winner gets a free family getaway package at the resort and a chance to meet the marine mammal.“Once we get an idea of the calf’s particular personality traits, we’ll share them as part of the competition details, so people can come up with a name that suits its unique characteristics,” said Trevor Has-sard, director. One of Tangalooma’s favourite mums, dolphin Tinkerbell, arrived at shore the night of May 30, 2012 with a brand new calf in tow. The calf is number four for the 22-year-old Tinkerbell, and her experience shone through as she carefully steered her new bub away from the other dolphins at

the nightly hand feeding session. Tinkerbell’s other offspring are the very popular teen-age dolphins Tangles and Storm and the juvenile Phoenix. Hassard said the new addition was a great

surprise and exciting event for everyone at the resort, particularly the members of the

dolphin care team. It may be some time before dolphin car-ers will be able to determine the sex of the calf and at least 12 months before it joins the feeding program.

Interested parties may start contacting the resort for details of the contest at:

None other than HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, and Chairman and CEO of Emirates Airline and Group, key player behind DSS, has acknowledged that launching a weeks-long shopping extravaganza seemed a really long stretch back then.

He said: “Fifteen years ago, the Dubai Gov-ernment’s decision to launch a summer tourist event raised questions and doubts; many were skeptical of the weather-related challenges, along with possible competition from events hubs and tourist destinations across the region.

“However, Dubai managed to transform these challenges into opportunities through developing initiatives and infrastructure that has allowed the Emirate to become the destination that we know and love today.”

The figures, said HE Suhail, were “clear indications that this festival has forever altered the face of summer in Dubai.”

“The number of visitors has multiplied by six, with total spend increasing tenfold over the past 14 years – both clear indications that this festival has forever altered the face of summer in Dubai,” she said. Indeed.

SWiSS SUMMER @ 1,402 METERS HiGH

The most common misconception about life in the Alps is that once the winter ski season is over, the mountain range and surrounding regions fall dormant. Truth is that spring and summer give winter a run for its money when it comes to adventurous pursuits and laid back al-fresco living especially in the idyllic mountain town of Leukerbad which sits at 1,402 metres above sea level and is just over two hours from Geneva.

The hiking trails of the Gemmi Pass vary from short walks to day-long excursions. For more leisurely forays into the surrounding landscape, designated horse-riding trails can also be followed to the lower areas of the Gemmi Pass

THE STORY OF Wind TOWERS City planners go back to the basics

Travel Arabia 33

Architecture of the past was mainly subjec-tive to the natural environment and reflected the economical, social and cultural factors of a society.

The wind tower, a traditional architectural element was mainly part of residential houses and served as a remarkable natural air condition-ing system of the past. It was an essential element in many houses a few decades ago. The function of this tower was to catch cooler breeze that prevailed at a higher level above the ground and direct it into the interior of the building below.

The wind tower was a vent rising above the level of the roof designed to effectively funnel air into the rooms below to improve the internal climatic conditions. Although the wind beneath the wind tower

was strongest, the airflow extended into the room as a whole, and even into the verandah and courtyard beyond.

Annual upstairs-downstairs migration within the house was a regular feature. At the onset of every summer, the furniture and accessories of the warm ground floor rooms were moved to the upper rooms with the wind towers and more openings.

With the arrival of elec-

tricity, a few homes installed fans, and some rooms were adapted to receive individual air con-ditioning units. But these were noisy, expensive and relatively ineffective in high rooms originally designed to facilitate external air flow.

Many elderly people preferred the less chilly, gentler, fluctuating wind tower air and the family would take their afternoon nap and find solace

in its breeze.Although an essential element in many

houses a few decades ago, the need for a func-tional wind tower has ceased to exist. Currently, almost all the buildings in UAE are centrally air-conditioned. In the past, the houses erected out of irregular coral and laminar shell-stone slabs or date palm leaves were endowed with wind towers constructed with the same material. Although at present, a wind tower is not a stipulation, it is considered an element of local identity and can be seen in contemporary buildings but only as an architectural ornamentation.

HistoryThe wind tower, traditionally known as

the wind catcher was derived from the Persian word “Badgir.” It was used for many centuries in Persia to create natural ventilation in buildings. In Persian language, Baad means wind, and gir means catch. As Persian merchants and traders began to settle around the coasts of Arabia, they introduced this architectural feature in the Gulf. Keeping its functionality in view, the badgir soon became popular with affluent families of the region, and came to be known as Barjeel or Malqaf.

ConstructionWind catchers were constructed with one,

four or eight openings, and came in various designs: uni-directional, bi-directional, and multi-directional. Examples of wind catchers can be found in traditional Persian-influenced ar-chitecture throughout the Middle East, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Usually positioned on one corner of a house, they were made of stone or mud-brick or gypsum plaster and elevated around three to five meters above the roof with vents facing the direction of the sea to catch the cooler air. Just like an open window, the tower caught the air which it then filtered down into the living area below, creating a cool air stream.

One wind tower would normally take a month or two to erect. They were constructed of a frame work of poles tied together to give rigid-ity and tensile strength to the thin masonry slabs which it supported. The ends of the poles were left projecting after the tower was complete to serve as scaffolding when the tower needed to be closed in the winter or for maintenance work.

WinterTo close a wind tower for the winter, sloping

triangle boards were fitted over the top of the enclosed portion, behind the external fins. The boards were then plastered to seal them against the rain. In other cases eight timber triangles fit-ted into the base of the tower. The task of open-

ing the towers again was a messy job because of the accumulation of bird droppings, sand and dust. Wind towers sometimes became structur-ally unsafe and had to be carefully demolished before they fell.

Generally the height of a wind tower is from 12 meters to 15 meters above ground level. The higher the wind tower, the more effective was it likely to be. Generally, as height increases, air is cooler and less dusty, and the velocity of wind greater. Height raises the wind tower into a faster air stream where there is no obstruction of air flow by neighboring buildings or roof surfaces. Air also cools in the process of descending a wind tower.

The size of the vent openings as well as their height is important in determining their func-tionality. The great merit of the multi directional wind tower is that it can capture the breeze from which ever direction it comes. The effectiveness of a wind tower depends on wind speed, the orientation of the towers vents, direction of the prevailing winds, the orientation of the room and opportunities for opening doors and windows.

SustainabilityModern Dubai exploded with new architec-

ture in the late 20th century. During the course, it maintained its blend of modern necessities of life with ancient forms and traditional patterns displayed in most of its contemporary interiors today. Currently, studies are being made to analyze how relevant many of the traditional ar-chitectural features are to the modern challenges of building sustainable communities in a way that maximizes the use of renewable energy.

Air conditioning in UAE accounts for 70 percent of energy use in UAE buildings which is no longer sustainable. So architects and designers are experimenting with new strategies of more efficient aerodynamics, controlled opening and closing of dust traps, and combining evaporating and cooling systems to utilize the wind towers in a modern sustainable way.

In a world where issues of modern conserva-tion are becoming increasingly critical, UAE aspires Masdar City in Abu Dhabi to become one of the most sustainable cities in the world. The city is approximately six square kilometers big, and is envisioned to house 40,000 residents and run on purely renewable energy and clean technologies.

At the center is Masdar Institute, which was developed in cooperation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and is already operating in Masdar City with its students being the city’s first residents.

It provides a platform where current and future renewable energy and clean technologies are showcased marketed researched, developed, tested and implemented. Therefore the indig-enous structure of the wind tower as a passive system of natural ventilation shall definitely be the focus towards establishing sustainable architecture.

In the yonder days, desert dwellers built their homes with these strange-looking fixtures to make for a natural cooling system. now, with air-conditioning in the uae accounting for 70 percent of energy use, architects and designers are pondering how to bring these devices back to life.

Ask a nonresident to describe the Middle East and invariably he or she will respond with thoughts of deserts, yet beyond the clouds in the green heights of Jebel Akhdar lies a surprise to delight and en-trance even the most reluctant gardener. For in the brief window of May,

the villagers of Sayq begin their annual rose harvest in an abundant plantation, rising before dawn to gather flowers whilst the fragrance is at its most sublime.

The promises of an extrasensory extravaganza were tempting and so I joined The Guide Oman who arranged a bespoke itinerary including a tour around a rose water distillery and a walk through the plantation, building up to lunch in a hotel with a difference.

Producing rose water is an ancient tradition in Jebel Akhdar, thought to originate from the 17th century when Oman experienced influence from Persia. But whatever the roots be, remarkably the distillation process has barely changed over time and I was keen to experience it firsthand.

On this trip, The Guide Oman provided a charming and bubbly bunch of guides from Muscat, chauffeuring us in hardy yet comfortable jeep wranglers, an appropriate option to tackle the roads traversing up to our final destination at 2,300m above sea level.

At the foot of the mountain, we noted that the temperature gauge was a searing 40 degrees. However, soon after passing through the police checkpoint, the temperature started to drop by approximately a degree every kilometer. Now that’s great news for a Norwegian girl like myself, who openly admits to loving extremes of cold rather than heat, and happily, this trend continued until the thermometer dropped to 28 degrees, bliss.

The instant reward for 12 kilometers of wiggling roads reminiscent of a snakes-and-ladders board game and encountering endless hairpin bends, was a breathtaking vista back towards the ancient city of Nizwa, former capital

of Oman. The view was framed by rolling rock formations, gently waving their way back down into the depths. Around the next bend, the vast canyon becomes apparent and while certainly greener than the lowlands, I was still wonder-ing how this area would support the rich flower harvest promised.

All became clear as we dropped into the village of Sayq and met our mountain guide Mohammed, a sprightly Jabali whose family has farmed in the temperate climate seemingly at the top of the world for time immemorial. Rising from the depths of the Sayq plateau floor is a thick and luscious plantation that was, against the barren, rocky sides the greenery, astoundingly verdant.

Our first port of call was a traditional rose water distillery. Once inside this crude building, we experienced an instant snapshot of the past as our eyes adjusted to the murky smoke lined walls of the cook house and we took in the equipment of a master distiller; the mud brick oven, woven baskets, clay pots and silver rose water dispensers.

The pricey Omani rose water is often claimed to be the most sought variety—the demand is so high from buyers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, so much so that the small harvest on Jebel Akh-

dar makes it difficult to be met. The key to this lies in the use of charcoal in the distillation process, hence the smoky, slightly brackish colour offsetting the sweetly scented aroma.

Rose water is part of a long culinary history in Oman, with its delicate flavour-enhancing halwa, kahwa and biryani dishes; the benefits can also be sought in a medicinal sense as it can be applied to soothe headaches and aching joints.

The process itself is intricate and re-quires the utmost dedication to the task, using a whopping five kilograms of roses to produce 75 ml—this is truly the am-ber nectar. It starts with simmering the roses with water inside a clay pot over a charcoal fire for three hours, the steam is then trapped by a copper bowl filled with cold water and the condensation is then collected in a bowl floating on the surface of the simmering roses. After cooling and filtering out the sediment, the liquid is then decanted into a clay storage pot for ninety days to mature.

The owner of the rose distillery, Abdullah, is proud of his heritage and obligingly answered our questions through our guide. Although in Oman, it often feels like life has rarely moved forward beyond the limits of the larger towns and cities, it was a delight to see a successful family business in action, with perhaps the only change in production over the last century being the introduc-tion of the vimto bottle as a container for the product.

Our appetites whetted, it was time to explore the heart of the plantation

and, walking through a myriad of ancient, shady passageways and listening to the chirpy sounds of village life, it became clear why many residents from across the Gulf are attracted to the area to escape the relentless heat of summer in the

lowlands. The sound of rushing water echoed in the

basin as we followed the winding falaj into the depths of the plantation. This gentle walk drew surprising comparisons with the fruit-growing regions of Italy and Spain. The bountiful pome-granate trees were loaded with red trumpet-like flowers that were seamlessly transforming into fruits, a truly spectacular sight. This fertile area is divided into family-owned plots and only the limitations to the type of crop planted are set by the climate. In just five minutes, we passed through trees bearing apricots, figs, walnuts, apples, pears, mangoes and papayas. Suddenly, an arresting fragrance wafted along the breeze and we knew we were close to the holy grail, the mountain rose.

The pale pink variety of the Damask Rose is coveted for distillation, comprising of the most fragrantly and extravagantly frilled petals. A large bush can produce over 3,000 blooms in a season. With all our senses fully enlightened and a tremendous feeling of wellbeing, we jumped back into the jeeps to round off the afternoon with late lunch at the newest addition to hotel accommodation at the top of the Jebel, the Al Sahab Hotel. For a hotel in the early phases of opening and in such a remote location, all praise must go to the staff who looked after us royally, and the chef who served up a western style lunch incorporating a choice of lamb or freshly caught hammour, mountain corn and fruits to satisfy our hunger cravings.

The setting was quite beyond compare, not only because of the cleverly landscaped and fossil filled gardens but also because of its location at the lip of a magnificent canyon, overlooking terraced villages clinging to the steep slopes. Our trip ended with the opportunity to ponder over this breathtaking view from the tranquility of the swimming pool.

“There are no angry waves at this time,” Hani, our Socotran driver said as we drove past the calm turquoise sea. It took me a while to register what he meant by

“angry waves”. Then I remembered that I had been advised not so long ago to travel to Socotra before May, when it starts to get impossibly windy as the monsoon season sets in and lasts until October.

I couldn’t believe I was finally in Socotra, the land of the dragon’s blood trees, frankincense and myrrh. Every traveler worth his or her salt dreams of coming here. Socotra, like Zanzibar and Timbuktu, the name alone is quite evocative, enough to stir wanderlust in restless souls. Who-ever came up with these names must have known something about casting a spell on travelers. In fact, Marco Polo had called the Socotrans of his time “the most expert enchanters in the world…They can make the wind blow from whatever quarter they may wish. They can calm the sea at will, or raise a raging storm and a howling gale.” Perhaps the monsoon season was the real culprit

there.Marco Polo also noted that “ambergris is

found here in great quantities”. What exactly is ambergris? “It is produced in the belly of the whale and the cachalot, which are the two big-gest fish that exist in the sea,” was Marco Polo’s explanation, before proceeding to describe how the locals used to do whale-hunting in those times. I hope that the fact that I don’t have any idea what ‘ambergris’ is means that it is no longer a popular commodity in this day and age. I do know, though, that overfishing is one of the critical issues that the Arabian Sea is facing today. Sharks, for example, are sold aplenty everyday in fish markets in the region, such as in neighboring Aden, also in Yemen, where I happened to have spent a few days in late 2011.

A UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, Socotra is often described as “the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean”. The island, which is part of a four-island archipelago, has been geographically isolated from mainland Africa for millions of years. It is home to 700 rarest of the rare species

of flora and fauna, a full one-third of which can only be found here.

I was with Malak, a Yemeni journalist-friend, and we flew here on board Felix Arabia with a group of tourists from the Czech Republic who were staying for ten days. Unfortunately, my friend and I could only afford to take time off for three days. As soon as we got out of the airport and breathed Socotra’s pure air and saw the otherworldly landscape of rolling burnt sienna-colored hills with the weirdest trees we had ever seen in our lives, majestic mountains, mirage-like sand dunes and the sparkling sea with its various hues of blue, we were already under a spell. I was already feeling sad that we would have to leave. My Yemeni friend was already planning to come back. We were instantly envious of the Czech tourists. (It was great to see, though, that the tourists were back in Yemen, after staying away for almost a year due to the conflict that had gripped the country in 2011 in the wake of the Arab Spring.)

Our first stop was Dilisha beach, about two

hours’ drive from the airport. We got there just before dark and pitched our tent right on the beach. It was not exactly a gorgeous beach, but it was good to start the trip sleeping under the stars and surrounded by the mountains and the sea. There are no camping facilities here just yet, although there is now a site under construc-tion. We spent the time playing with the waves, watching the gigantic crabs (who were also watching us the whole time) as they came out of hiding at night, and watching the constellations, counting shooting stars. In the morning, we had visitors – three Egyptian eagles – as we sat down for breakfast (bread and spread we had brought with us from the Yemeni capital, Sana’a) after a stroll on the beach.

We then drove to Dihamry marine protected area, one of the best areas for snorkeling. One does not need to go far from the shore to see the vibrant underwater life that Socotra has to offer. Snorkeling masks and flippers could be rented for cheap (less than $10 for both), as I did. We were welcomed with a pot of tea. As we prepared to leave, one of the men went in the water and came out after a while with a huge lobster, which he offered to sell us for about $30. Guess what we had for lunch.

We were perhaps just lucky that we had not seen any other tourists so far. It did make a big difference. We didn’t feel like tourists at all, more like guests from the city visiting relatives in a quaint town.

From Dihamry, we drove until we reached a steep serpentine road to get to the Homhil protected area, home to many kinds of endemic trees.

We could only drive up to the plateau. From there, we had to engage a local guide for the considerably challenging trek going down the

mountain. Mid-way, my friend said we should have been warned that it was not going to be an easy trek. It was well worth it, though, the rewards being the sight of otherworldly endemic trees such as the dragon’s blood (so-called be-cause of its thick blood-red sap, it seems) and cucumber trees, as well as gum and frankincense trees, among others. We also got a breathtak-ing view of the Arabian Sea when we reached a natural basin.

There is now a community-run camping site in Homhil where one can even rent a tent. The community can prepare breakfast and an evening meal. The original plan was for us to set up camp there in the midst of a hauntingly surreal forest, but we, um, chickened out and decided to head back to town and stay at the Tourist Hotel instead. City slickers that we are, we just wanted to have a proper bed, toilet and shower for the night. As I write this, I can’t help but wish that I be given a second chance to camp out in Homhil, and this time I most definitely would not blow it.

On the way to Hadibo, we passed by a long stretch of beautiful sand dunes. They made the mountain ranges look like the Himalayas or the Alps. They looked like pure white snow. And they seemed to be challenging the mountains, daring to rise so far up the latter. We decided to get off the car and climb a sand dune. It was good to take it easy after the Homhil hike. We noticed there was a spring in the area as well, and there were many local people shooting the breeze there at that time of day.

“Can we just come back here tomorrow?,” my friend asked. Seeing how happy she was in this kind of mirage “winter wonderland” after the Homhil trek, I didn’t have the heart to say no. Goodbye Dixam plateau, land of dragon’s

blood trees. Goodbye, Wadi Dirhur canyon. That was how it was that we were back the

next morning in Ar’ar. It was too hot to climb the sand dunes, though, so we just spent the time bird-watching. We saw a lot of seagulls, cormorants and Egyptian eagles. The serious bird-watchers would be on the lookout for the endemic Socotra starlings, Socotra buntings and Socotra sunbirds, but we were just accidental bird-watchers, anyway.

In the afternoon, we drove to Qalansiya beach, an impossibly beautiful beach that makes one feel he/she is in paradise. Moreso because there are no hotels or any facilities around. There were kids playing soccer when we came, who asked if we had pencils to spare. They were nice, friendly kids. Once I started swimming, I didn’t want to get out of the water anymore. This beach is paradise on earth with the finest and whitest sand, playful sand dunes, limestone peaks, and a flock of birds chilling out on the shore.

On our last night, we stayed in Adeeb camp in Hadibo. We were served a sumptuous dinner of grilled fish and rice cooked the Socotran way with spices, and salad. Some of the campers, we learned, make it a point to come to Socotra every year.

Maybe Marco Polo was right, after all, about this being an enchanters’ island. There is definitely something about this place. I am so coming back, Inshallah. A word of caution, if you want to come, be ready to camp and rough it. That is still the best way to really enjoy this wildly beautiful island. Oh, and don’t forget that the Homhil trek can be quite a challenge, and as my friend Malak said, we should have been warned beforehand. But then again, would we have gone for it if we were?

46on a KenYan safariThe first elephant sighting is probably the most exciting as everyone scrambles to adjust their lenses to frame these magnificent beasts.

For many travellers, going on a safari is a long cherished dream and for the fortunate few who get to go, the raw beauty of Africa is a

spectacular vista of unspoiled savannah and a breathtaking array of wildlife.

Spread over 1500 sqm, Masai Mara, in south-western Kenya, is named for the Masai tribes who inhabit the area and is known as one of the best game reserves for

spotting the big five—lion lion, Cape buf-falo, elephant, rhino and leopard.

Arriving in Kenya Arriving in Nairobi with Kenya Air-

ways in the early hours, we were transport-ed by a small turbo prop plane to the Mara landing strip about an hour away. As we get airborne and leave behind the congestion of Nairobi, we got our first glimpse of the

sun-drenched sweeping plains of Kenya’s Masai Mara that stretches as far as the eye can see.

At the landing strip, a small clearing of reddish brown sand, we were met by our guide from safari company Travel Wild who was to be our constant companion for the next three days. Experienced and highly knowledgeable tour guides are the key to making your experience safe and en-

joyable. They know where the best viewing spots are and where to go to spot the ani-mals. They are also in touch with the other drivers throughout the drives so they get to share information and sightings. Bumping along the road, your driver will stop and chat to others and exchange information, allowing the different groups to get the best viewing experience.

There are numerous hotels and lodges to suit all budgets and tastes throughout Kenya, so choosing where to stay is often through recommendations. We were bil-leted at the Mara Serena Safari Lodge, a collection of individual rooms designed to resemble a traditional Masai village. Perched on a hill with commanding, breathtaking views of the Mara, the lodge takes advantage of its location by thought-fully providing seating areas for guests to

enjoy the scenery. The lodge is home to plenty of wildlife,

and strolling around the grounds, we spied on a pair of gazelles grazing in the neatly manicured lawns as well as a group of mis-chievous tree hyrax quite at home darting about the pool area and climbing over the low roofs of the rooms.

After a leisurely lunch, we headed off for our first game drive. Game drives tend to go out early morning and late afternoon when the weather is a little cooler as that is when the animals are more active. Our first sighting was of the ubiquitous Thomson gazelle recognisable by their dark stripe that runs from the shoulder to the flank. These animals are a favourite feast for the lions and cheetahs that roam the Mara so are always aware of what’s going on around them. A little while later, we came across a group of lionesses relaxing under a tree with two cubs and were able to get up very close to them without disturbing their nap. On the way back to the lodge we saw a buffalo enjoying some mud-bathing, one of the benefits of the rainy season.

Breakfast by the hippo poolSetting the alarm at 6 am, we were up

just before sunrise to head out for a drive in what is arguably the best time of the

day to view the wildlife. It is cool, peaceful and the animals are more active. Just after leaving the lodge, we came across a jackal trotting along the road in search of break-fast. Shortly afterwards giraffes and zebras crossed our path and we saw a large herd of impalas and topis grazing together.

Kenya has two rainy seasons – heavier rainfall from April to May and shorter less frequent rain from November to December which means there is an abundance of fresh vegetation. When food is plentiful the ani-mals will breed so expect to see lion cubs and elephant calves during this time.

The first elephant sighting is probably the most exciting as everyone scrambles to adjust their lenses to frame these magnifi-cent beasts, a spectacle made even more special by the presence of a six-month-old calf, its head barely visible above the long grass.

After a two-hour drive, we headed to the hippo pool where we were greeted by a Masai beautifully attired in a scarlet robe for an al fresco champagne breakfast. The hippo pool is always occupied by both hip-pos and crocodiles and while both spend long hours submerged, the occasional fight for territory gives visitors the opportunity for better images.

Many visitors choose to stay in differ-

ent lodges to see as much of the country as possible. Our next stop was the luxury tented Sarova Mara Game Camp for our second overnight. The Sarova Mara Game Camp is a sprawling camp that features spacious tents decorated in soothing neu-tral colours. Hidden at the end of meander-ing pathways and completely secluded the tents feature large walk-in showers and supremely comfortable oversized beds. The nights are chilly and the hot water bottles

that arrive by wheelbarrow in the late evening are a welcome touch.

Monkeys at lunchRising once again at 6 am, we were

in for a treat with a close-up sighting of a cheetah sunning itself on the road. Unfazed by the vehicles, it sat and watched for a while before trotting off into the grass. A short while later, we were able to get a glimpse of a hyena and a pair of young

male lions in the distance. After breakfast, we drove to another

popular resort, the Keekorok Lodge. Trans-lated as meaning motley abundance in the local Masai language, the Keekorok Lodge was constructed in 1962 on a choice eighty acre site in an area of permanent springs and lush grassland. The property has its own hippo pool with specially constructed viewing platform accessed by a wooden bridge. It is also home to vervet monkeys who scamper around the grounds provid-ing endless entertainment for visitors.

Heading for the remote airstrip to await the small plane that would take us back to Nairobi, we were caught in a heavy thunderstorm that soon cleared with the rainclouds being replaced by clear blue skies as the plane took off. Nairobi is a busy city that is fraught with traffic jams particu-larly around the morning and afternoon rush hour so allow plenty of time to get to your destination.

Our accommodation for the night was the pan-African themed Nairobi Serena Hotel a member of the Leading Hotels of the World group. Located in the heart of the city, it is a good base from which to explore the city. It is also renowned for its Mandhari fine-dining restaurant, which is rated as one of Kenya’s finest. The hustle and bustle of Nairobi

There is plenty to see and do in Nairobi so it is worth spending one night in this busy city. Our first stop for the day was the Nairobi National Park Elephant and Rhino Nursery which is run by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a small charity, established in 1977 to help conserve the wildlife. The elephant orphanage takes in baby orphan elephants from all over Kenya and raises them together until they are old

enough to survive on their own. visitors to the elephant orphanage get to see the young elephants play ball, eat, take mud baths, and interact with their keepers. http://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/

We then headed to the Giraffe Center, a non-profit organisation that was set up by Betty and Jock Leslie-Melville in 1979 to save the endangered Rothschild Giraffe. visitors get the opportunity to feed the giraffes who stretch their long graceful

necks over the protective fencing for the food pellets.

When in Nairobi, a visit to the famous Carnivore restaurant is a must. This open-air restaurant serves a vast selection of meat from pork and lamb to the more exotic crocodile and ostrich. All of the meat is grilled on Masai swords over a huge open charcoal pit which is then carved at your table. A white flag in the middle of the table is lowered signalling defeat as soon as you have had enough to eat.

Without a doubt, a safari is one of the greatest experiences of your life and one that should be on every travellers list of places to visit. Before going on a safari to Kenya, it’s important to know what to ex-pect and how you should prepare for your vacation so do your research.

Need to knowWhat to wear

During the daytime, shorts or light cotton trousers with t-shirt preferably in beige or khaki to blend in with the envi-ronment. Avoid white as you will get dirty very quickly and it increases your visibility. Take a sweatshirt for the evenings and early mornings as it can get a little chilly.

Game drivesTalk softly to avoid scaring off the

animals and do not leave the vehicle unless given permission to do so by the guide.

What to takeIf possible take a camera with a long

lens for taking close-up pictures; a pair of binoculars is also useful. Pack light as the

small planes have weight and size restric-tions

visasMost nationalities can get a visa upon

entry at a cost of USD50, although it is advisable to get your visa before you travel during peak season to avoid the long queues at the airport.

When to goThe Masai Mara migration from June

through November is the most popular season for Kenyan tourists, says Frommer’s. See millions of wildebeest, zebras and an-telopes moving in August, September and October—the most active safari months. But be aware that these months also are the most popular with tourists.

arabian Courtyard Hotel & spaYou were in Bur Dubai and you didn’t stay there?!?

This four-star hotel is near everywhere.

Bur Dubai, where it all started, is a 24-7 place.

This buzzling part of the city has much of the icons that have signified the emirate for decades: The creek, lifeline in those yonder years. The Bastakia quarter, or simply, Bastakiya, an area by the creek dating back to the 1890s, and whose people lived through pearl diving. The Al Fahidi Museum, a fort actually, which was built in several phases starting around 1787 and believed to be Dubai’s oldest building. And, of course, the Arabian Courtyard Hotel & Spa.

Indeed, having been in Bur Dubai,

you’d often be asked this question: “So where did you stay at?” And the answer better be Arabian Courtyard Hotel & Spa, otherwise you’d most probably get a good one-minute probing stare—like the person telling you, in a manner only someone with good telephatic skills can, that you’ve just lost it; being in Bur Dubai and not staying at “The Courtyard” ? Shoo Hada (What is this) ?!?

For indeed, Arabian Courtyard Hotel & Spa compliments everything there is to see for wandering hungry eyes in Bur Dubai, standing tall at eight stories high to also become your landmark and point

of direction in case you got carried away by the vibrance of the surrounding area.

The four-star hotel is a short walk from Bank Street and Port Rashid with it’s cruise terminal; a short three-kilometer ride away from Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai World Trade Center and exhibition halls and only six kilometers away from Dubai airport. The Spice Market and the Gold Souk—yes gold market!—are easily acces-sible by an exciting Abra ride (water taxi).

It’s perfect for long-stayers sent to Dubai by their corporate headquarters to oversee projects, honeymooners and holi-daymakers as well.

Arabian Courtyard Hotel & Spa certainly does know the way to its guests’ heart, which is why people, including non-guests, just keep going back. This starts with a scrumptious eat-all-you-can breakfast and ends with a splendid dinner at any of their various restaurants like the fine-dining, award-winning Mumtaz Mahal that serves North West and Mughlai delica-cies using authentic ingredients that will offer every taste bud a palette of flavors.

Other restaurants include Silk Route, which serves authentic Thai and Chinese-style cuisines, offering signature gourmet, from mouth-watering appetizers to delight-ful curry dishes and a perfect Pad Thai.

Arabian Courtyard Hotel & Spa has 173 furnished rooms in traditional Arabic theme.

Talk about hospitality and this restaurant located on the first floor of the hotel, talks the talk and walks the walk! With so many outlets in the vicinity, it’s great to have a licensed and outstanding one in the neighborhood, in “The Walk”.

Start the evening with pleasing smiles bundled with hospitality as the host walks you to the table and look around to wit-ness the spots filling with curious guests. The evening unfolds with characteristic skills of the chefs surrounding the tep-panyaki tables showcasing their talents while engaging their patriotic knives. With the art to light the fire occasionally, they illuminate the experience of diners around. Whether it is an intimate dinner or a birthday celebration, Benihana gives a touch to the occasion, with their presence

and active participation.

Just like the ambiance attracts a visitor to the restaurant, the cuisine and offer-ings retain them till they transform the visitor to guest and beyond. It’s time to unleash the chop sticks, it’s time to dig in! The diverse menu meets the expectation of everyone’s palate, starting with miso soup and Benihana’s signature salad with a nice ginger dressing and freshly made sushi, Sashimi, Nigiri and maki. If that’s not tempting enough, a choice of tender chicken, juicy sirloin, delicious assorted seafood like prawns, succulent salmon and hammour served with a selection of steamed or vegetable fried rice is sure to take you on a trip to the planet of delec-table cuisines.

With an option to dine outdoors, and if weather permits, do take the op-portunity to elevate your dining venture with sweeping views of Jumeirah Beach Residences.

As you cultivate your senses, the host-ess, Dimple, ensures the guests in-sight are at best in mind, particularly advising to keep room and desire for dessert. True to the words, the tempura ice-crème stole heart of one equivalent to millions. It comes accompanied with banana tem-pura which just melts in your mouth and leaves you urging for more. Walk in to this distinctive restaurant with no expectation of the night, as Benihana is sure to surprise all with some great moments to remember.

As the evening comes to a close, it’s time to say good bye. Let’s just say, will be back soon to say the next ‘hi!’

Ember Grill and Lounge, snugged comfortably in one corner of The Address Dubai Mall’s immaculate lobby, is the hotel’s signature restaurant popular for all reasons—and the perfect alibi too for miss-ing your sweetheart’s home-made dinner: “Hon, sorry but the food back there was so good I totally forgot you prepared some-thing, really. Let me make it up to you and bring you there tomorrow. Puhlease?”

Ember Grill and Lounge, which has room for a little over 150 people, is the last stop of sort after a day of shop-till-you-drop frenzy at the world’s biggest brand name paradise called Dubai Mall, which by the way, is right next door. It’s also perfect for lovebirds, family affairs, or just plain meeting-of-the-minds get-together after a day’s work.

On Tuesday after hours, the place, beaming with sunset red-orange hues in consonance with the piped-in music, two glowing fire poles at the front entrance, and the name of course, has come up with just one more reason why you shouldn’t be anywhere else that time of the day but right in there—vintage Night.

Why? Because someone in a right state of mind—obviously—finally came up with the noble idea of reminding natty, gourmet-savvy city slickers that dining is

not just gorging one’s self breathless with everything on the buffet till the eyes bulge out. What were we thinking?

As Isael Gonzalves, Ember Grill and Lounge’s Brazilian restaurant manager who heads an international team of service staff puts it, dining is enjoying food with drinks that stimulate the taste buds to give it more flavour. Ahhh, la dolce vita—the sweet life—indeed!

At Ember Grill and Lounge, they give you just that, offering selected beverages complimented with a splendid five-course menu that starts on tuna carpaccio with shaved foie gras terrine, and followed by seared crab cakes with heirloom tomato or wild mushroom pasta. The main course is a choice between grilled beef and short ribs or grilled salmon with jumbo prawns.

The really good part is having the food in your mouth long enough to savour the taste even more, then letting it in and washing it down with an equally delicious drink. This excites your taste buds so that the next mouthful becomes even more fla-vourful and, there you go, dining becomes a sensation. Ahhhh, la dolce vita!

Capping this would either be warm apple crumble or fresh berries with co-conut crumble, vanilla soup and rhubarb sorbet.

The menu and the choice of drinks change every month. So skip the home-made dinner and swing by Ember Grill and Lounge then, fair enough?

You read right, a sky spa is the latest concept taking the wellness industry by storm and right in the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi.

As a person who gets lost each time I venture to Abu Dhabi, I was relieved to hear that the new Hyatt Capital Gate is strategically located adjacent to the thriving Abu Dhabi Exhibition Centre – a place I’ve become well acquainted with. The Capital Gate building features an eye-catching canopy that sweeps from the 18th floor across the historic grandstand, artistically representing the connection of the past with today, and creating a wave-like effect over the exhibition centre. The hotel itself oc-cupies floors 18 to 33 of the iconic Capital Gate building which has already found its way into the Guinness Book of World Records as the furthest leaning tower at an 18 degree.

Home to Rayana Spa on its 19th floor, it would become my sanctuary of tranquil-ity and rejuvenation for a couple of hours of well earned, “me” time.

I’m never disappointed when I walk into a Hyatt and this experience was no different. The staff was delightful and full of enthusiasm to show off their beauti-ful hotel which opened just seven months ago. The spa was easy on the eye with a minimalist interior design incorporating rough-finished, neutral-colored stone walls and contrasting soft, grainy woods of light grey tones, which I found calming.

The treatment room was huge and thoughtfully designed. Separate entrances for the guest and the therapist, providing a dedicated preparation area for all those wonderful lotions and potions. The treat-ment suite itself was amazing and the stand out quality was the space and the view. Instead of running from our arid desert roots, the designers had cleverly decided to embrace it. Rich ochre sand had been used alongside a combination of unpolished and highly-polished granite punctuated with green botanicals to bring the desert to me.

With my own en-suite washroom, van-ity, changing area and rainforest shower, I was impressed before we began. This spa’s hardware is hard to beat.

Sitting and enjoying the view, I selected

my preferred “June Jacobs” brand massage oil for the day from a choice of water, sun, sand and botanical themes. I eased into my luxurious robe and then enjoyed the simple pleasure of a foot ritual. The act of having one’s feet washed and gently exfoli-ated, rinsed and ever-so-gently towel-dried, can never be underestimated. It certainly set the scene for the Rayana Renewal Mas-sage to follow.

My therapist, Soya, who had most recently worked in Massachusetts and Cape Town, was a dream. So much personal-ity, so warm hearted and with hands so talented, Hyatt should insure them, I suc-cumbed to her art.

The massage was indulgently relaxing, combining deep tissue to knead away those knots and Swedish rhythmical strokes to relax and pressure point techniques to offer the ultimate in holistic treatments. I felt as close as I think I have ever been to what is referred to as an “out-of-body” experience. The music worked. The massage was bril-liance in action. The ambience was worthy of awards.

The Rayana spa has some terrific facilities that are worth taking advantage of when booking a ritual, from soaking up the awesome views of the city from the poolside terrace and fitness centre with its floor to ceiling windows or just relaxing with a steam pre-treatment.

If you’re feeling puckish after your spa ritual, the hotel has a plethora of outlets to choose from. Despite not having time on this occasion I’ve put the hotel’s signature restaurant 18˚ (degrees) on my dining wish list. Offering a bird’s eye view of Abu Dhabi city and a menu of Eastern Mediter-ranean flavors, I’ll be back. More information on Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi is available at abudhabi.capital-gate.hyatt.com or phone +9712 596 1100.

The Spa at The Address Dubai Marina exudes a tranquil atmosphere from the moment you enter. Presented with a cold towel and a refreshing herbal beverage upon arrival, I was then given a tour of the facilities and shown to my locker in the vast changing rooms to prepare for the treatment. Well lit, well stocked with toilet-ries and very spacious, the changing rooms encourage you to linger, but the steam room was beckoning. The “wet” area was a little disappointing in its size proportionate to the changing area, but equipped with rain shower, steam room and sauna, I was grateful to be alone.

Priding itself in the use of all natural treatments, The Tea of Spring Treatment is a new addition to the menu at The Spa, consisting of exfoliation, massage and facial incorporating four kinds of tea – regen-erating white tea, stimulating black tea, soothing red tea and antioxidant green

tea. The tea plant has one of the high-est levels of antioxidant concentrations known, containing antioxidants 200 times more potent than vitamin E, thus actively contributing to slowing the skin’s signs of aging and neutralising the free radicals that break down collagen and elastin. Inspired by the Japanese tea preparation ceremony, THEMAE Treatments combine spring water and tea to promote the body’s total well-being.

We began with the Nepalese Tea Exfoliation; using an aromatic paste of apricot oil, Shea butter, bamboo powder and an elixir of four teas it gently rids the skin of impurities. Having experienced vigorous body scrubs in the past, this was delightfully relaxing and subtle – and smelt wonderful too. Showering off the scrub, I was then treated to a Singapore Massage. Curious to know what type of massage this was, my therapist explained that the tech-nique draws from Chinese, Malaysian and

Indian therapies resulting in an extremely relaxing experience. It is designed to rid the body of fatigue, stress and tension, and it really did work. In fact, it worked so well, that I “missed” the final element of the massage – the stimulation of foot reflex zones with the Kansu bowl!

Reviving slightly for the Green Tea Fa-cial, this too was a gentle cleansing, steam-ing, exfoliation and de-stress face mask using a green tea compress accompanied by an upper body massage.

Not only did the 120-minute pass extremely quickly, I really enjoyed the aroma created by the various tea treatments and felt wonderfully calm and relaxed afterwards. Definitely a treatment to enjoy when you have no pressing commitments to rush off to afterwards, and definitely one for easing the stresses of city life.

72Sharjah was once again the center

of this part of the world’s art scene, show-casing must-see collections by a visionary modernist, Ibrahim El-Salahi, and an Englishman whose works influenced the West’s views of the Middle East—Owen Jones.

The Owen Jones Collection, as compiled by the victoria and Albert Museum, is on exhibit at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization till July 15 this year. The event started on March 21, 2012.

Eighty works encompassing over five decades by Ibrahim El-Salahi, for its part, went on display at the Sharjah Art Museum from March 20, 2012 to May 31, 2012.

Throngs of art lovers from the region and abroad visited the exhibition venues.

Jones was an architect and designer

whose explorations of Islamic design contributed to the redesigning of the 19th century British concept.

The touring exhibition, titled “Owen Jones: Islamic design, Discovery and vision comprised 100 objects illustrat-ing Jones’ interpretations of Islamic art, design and architecture. It was exhibited in Al Hambra Palace in Granada, Spain, and will go on show in South Korea, after Sharjah.

Meantime, “A visionary Modernist” follows work produced during El-Salahi’s travels from Sudan, while in self-imposed exile in Qatar, and on his continued journey to Oxford, United Kingdom. The exhibition highlights drawings, paintings, and literary ephemera on loan from international institutions and private collections.

El-Salahi’s body of work combines

a critical understanding of western art principles about Sudanese and Islamic art forms. His trademark linear style remains a pre-eminent unifying device expressing the intuitive merging of Islamic spirituality with critical social consciousness.

The exhibition which was organized by the Museum for African Art, New York, and guest curated by Salah M. Hassan, Cornell University, NY.

v&A was founded in 1852. It’s the world’s largest museum of decorative arts and design housing a permanent collec-tion of over 4.5 million objects. v&A, whose collection spans 5,000 years, was named after Prince Albert and Queen victoria.

Sharjah, which has gained reputa-tion as UAE’s art capital, has held similar exhibitions in the past.
