How do you like your winter holiday? Hot? Or cold? That’s the desperate tussle playing itself out in family homes across the country as we speak.

Okay, maybe that’s overstating a smidge, but so often when the topic comes up of where to go to fend off winter blues, households can be stubbornly divided. One half is all for heading somewhere hot with a beach; the other is already outside fitting the ski rack to the roof of the car.

How do you resolve the dispute? i have no idea. if you come up with one let me know. Sorry if you thought these were going to be some Oprah-style words of wisdom.

Maybe just blindfold yourself and open this winter Travel magazine at a random page and let that be your decision. There are ski holidays, beach holidays, driving holidays, boat cruises, air cruises and short break ideas. The only thing we’re missing is a skifield on a tropical island. Sorry.

Driving across Australia’s Savannah Way is a lesson in scale, particularly for Kiwis used to getting wherever they want in no more than a few hours’ drive. But this epic back-country road trip from coast to coast through three states across the top of Australia is also a lesson in our neighbour’s stunning, hugely varied landscape, from dramatic gorges and eucalyptus forests to tiny pit-stop towns and vast red and gold plains.

The Savannah way stretches 3700km from Broome in western Australia’s Kimberley region on the west coast to Cairns in the east, taking in five world heritage sites and more than a dozen national parks.

Take civilised sealed roads or do it the adventurous way along 4wD-only dustbowl back roads. The “way” is well signposted along most of its length and you can easily deviate to other sites along the route. Give yourself at least three weeks do the whole thing, though longer is better, or, if time is against you, pick a section.

To give you a taste, here’s a look at some of the highlights of the eastern stretch from Katherine in northern Territory to Cairns on the Queensland coast.

Katherine: About four hours south of Darwin on the famous Stuart Highway (which will take you all the way down to Adelaide) Katherine is key supply and fuel stop. Give yourself at least a day though to explore the rugged rock-scapes of nearby Katherine Gorge. Back in town, stop at the Top Didj Art Gallery and have a go at creating your own Aboriginal-style painting – or admire beautiful works by local indigenous artists. Camp the night at Territory Manor, Mataranka and take a dip in nearby Bitter Springs natural thermal pools.

roper Bar to Butterfly springs limmen National Park: Think of the Australian Outback and images of a never-ending, unchanging red desert spring to mind. watching it through the window as you drive the pock-marked back roads, you realise that’s underselling it terribly. it changes constantly in colour from red to orange, then gold and back again, punctuated by sculptural anthills and architectural, often charred eucalyptus trees. Every now and then it’s punctuated again by cool watering holes, where any Aussie travel companions will gleefully point out spots only recently vacated by crocodiles. To cool off in a croc-free environment, camp and swim beneath the cliffs at Butterfly Springs in Limmen national Park.

lost City, Cape Crawford: Accessible only by helicopter, the tall, pancaked spires of the Lost City near Cape Crawford are like something from another planet. Some of the rocky towers stand as high as 25m, in clusters broken up by waterfalls, water holes and tufts of greenery. Most tours will land you either on top of one of the larger spires or on the ground to wander through

caves and along paths for excellent views, wildlife and Aboriginal art.

seven emu station: The first aboriginal owned cattle station in nT and still run by its traditional owners, Seven Emu station makes a unique stopover. Camp on the cliff edge of the stunning Robinson River – complete with long-drop “loos with a view” facing the river cliffs and the sunset. Campers can join in the day-to-day activities of the farm, take a tour, or just chat to owner Frank Shadworth about the farm’s fascinating history.

lawn Hill Gorge/ riversleigh Fossil Fields: Paddle your way down eerily still waters framed by towering red-tinged cliffs at Lorne Hill Gorge in Boodjamulla national Park. Once you’ve paddled to the ridiculously picturesque indarri Falls, either park up for a refreshing swim or carry your canoe around the falls and keep going. Pitch a tent or rent a cabin at beautiful Adele’s Grove camping ground and spend a few days exploring the walkways and waterways of the national park. One must-visit is the world Heritage-listed Riversleigh Fossil Fields, a sprawling 10,000ha limestone plateau near Mt isa and one of the richest fossil sites in the world. A guided tour is a great idea to make the most of the fossil sites, and if the kids are with you they will love the stories of prehistoric Australian terrors like the “Drop Croc” – a giant tree-dwelling ancestor to the crocodile.

been favoured by fisherman keen to tussle with barramundi. The surrounding wetlands also make it a pilgrimage point for bird watchers and walkers. But, come late afternoon, there’s only one place to be – in the beer garden at Sunset Tavern, looking out at what is surely one of the world’s most spectacular sunsets. The huge sun flames bright red, lighting the sky in yellows, oranges and pinks, before sinking into the sea. when the show’s over sate yourself with a platter of the best seafood – mud crab, prawns, barramundi – you’ll taste anywhere. The other natural phenomenon you can see here is the gulf’s famed Morning Glory cloud. The odd, long tubular clouds are found in only two or three places around the world.

Cobbold Gorge: A guided boat tour through the narrow maze-like waterways, snaking between huge striped sandstone cliffs is a little like stepping back to a prehistoric era. Spot surprisingly delicate looking freshwater crocodiles snoozing on the banks, take a bushwalk, or fish for more of those barramundi.

undara National Park: The stars of Undara are undoubtedly the vast lava tubes created by an eruption almost 200,000 years ago, by one massive lava flow that melted its way for 100km through rock walls. As well as an excellent exploration spot for tourists, some of the tubes are home to Undara’s large population of microbats. Undara guides run trips to the caves on dusk, where, with the help of some trick lighting, you can see the tiny creatures swarm out of the caves at high speed in search of

insects. it’s an incredible, unique wildlife experience – though the snake phobic should be aware that trees above your viewing point are often home to hungry tiger snakes keen on microbats for dinner.

skyrail rainforest Cableway: it’s not strictly part of the Savannah way but, if you can persuade someone to drive your car the rest of the way into Cairns, cruising to the end of the route via a 7.5km cableway down through the rainforest feels like a long cold drink at the end of a long hot drive. You can pause at points on the ride down to wander among the world Heritage Listed rainforest, or just enjoy the stunning view on the leisurely ride down.

Get to grips with Australia’s most northern city. Here’s a few must-dos:

• Mindil Beach sunset Markets. Every Sunday and Thursday in the dry season (May to October) Mindil Beach becomes a thriving market, selling amazing international food as well as arts and crafts, and it seems as though almost the whole city comes out to play and watch the entertainment.

• Meet the locals. northern Territory has more crocodiles than anywhere else

in the world and you can get up close and personal with them at Crocosaurus Cove. The brave can choose to plummet inside the croc pools in the Cage of Death, the more sensible may choose to watch from behind a nice sturdy wall. To see crocodiles in their natural habitat take a wildlife cruise among the wetlands of Mary River national Park.

• Darwin Military Museum. For a sobering but informative look at the bombing of Darwin in world war ii, the Military Museum is a must-visit. The city was bombed 64 times over two years starting on February 19, 1942. The museum offers a detailed all-round history of the city’s war experience. There are also city-wide tours that take

in other key military sites.

• Cool off. Though it’s almost surrounded by the sea, swimming in it is a no-no in Darwin thanks to those bitey crocs. instead hit the Darwin waterfront where you can ride the swell in the wave Pool, or try the man-made beach at Recreation Lagoon. Alternatively there are great croc-free swimming holes, under waterfalls at Litchfield national Park.

• tiwi islands. Bathurst and Melville make up the Tiwi islands, about 100km north of Darwin. Accessible via plane or ferry, the islands offer amazing indigenous cultural experiences, as well as fishing and rare wildlife.

There’s a ski school, cafe and on-mountain accommodation. There are runs suitable for beginners, intermediate and advanced skiers. A club skifield open to the public, Tukino offers great snow without the crowds of whakapapa and Turoa.

• To get the biggest savings on Duty Free you are generally always best pre-purchasing your goods online. Your Duty Free goods are then delivered on your behalf to the airport for pick-up at the designated collection point. For departures this is after immigration and

security and for arrivals this is before Customs and baggage collection.

• Think about the best time to purchase liquids when you’re departing an airport, due to the Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGS) Security restrictions. You can purchase Duty Free liquids, aerosols and gels online or in-store when you are on a direct flight but not on a transit flight. The exception for this is when you are transiting through an Australian airport on to a final destination as the Duty Free operator can put your goods in a sealed bag which is allowed through Australian airports. if your goods are confiscated you will not be able to claim compensation from your Duty Free provider.

• As well as lower cost, sometimes consumers also benefit from being to buy exclusive products now available through high street retailers. An example of this is the ‘Explorer’ range of Johnnie walker Scotch made available only through Duty Free retailers.
