The American Institute for the Advancement of Forensic Studies (AIAFS) presents Training Description The course will consist of five lectures: The first lecture will review adverse childhood experiences with their epidemiology and how childhood trauma turns into life-long trauma organization of individuals. The second lecture will focus on how trauma affects multiple domains of health, educational capacities of children, professional lives of adults with impacts on multiple systems of care such as health, education, criminal justice, social services, among others. The third lecture will review the concept of trauma informed care and systems and the steps of building such systems. Fourth lecture will review family centered care and tie it to trauma informed, trauma sensitive, and resiliency focused services specifically in the health care system. The fifth lecture will review how trauma-informed screening and assessment practices as well as interventions are being implemented in a variety of institutions across the nation. If time allows, a brief breakout session will be held with groups of ten to discuss how the trainees from diverse backgrounds such as criminal justice setting, forensic mental health setting, medical setting, social services setting, and educational setting can transfer the knowledge from this course into their practice and agency. Presenter Biography Resmiye Oral, MD, is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College and Director of the Child Advocacy and Protection Program at the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, who is board-certified in child abuse pediatrics. She has published numerous articles on Child Abuse and Neglect since 1993 after establishing the first multidisciplinary child protection team in Turkey, her country of origin. She wrote a book and three book chapters, co-authored two training kits on child abuse. Her interests are international systems building to address child abuse and neglect, drug endangered children, shaken baby syndrome, adverse childhood experiences and trauma informed care, and early intervention with child abuse to prevent negative consequences of abuse. She believes recognition of subtle findings of abuse and trauma screening of victims and their caretakers are of utmost importance. She gives 50-60 lectures a year to regional, national and international professional audiences on child abuse and neglect.
