Other Thoughts Save all bid sheets, groups will need them for the reflection sheet.

Throughout the game, the teacher should pose as the CEO of Nike, encouraging students to give Nike what they want.

Investment Game Overview – Class Copy

The athletic company Nike has just created the best basketball shoe of all time. Known as “the Answer,” the shoe helps players of all skill levels look like Mr. Patterson on the court. When the shoe is released, Nike expects to sell millions of pairs. In order to make the most money, Nike is going to build a new shoe factory in a country; but where should this factory be built?

The members of your group are leaders of a developing country (a country with a low standard of living when compared to the United States). There are several reasons why you need to get companies like Nike to build factories in your country. Like most developing countries, your country was colonized (taken over) by European nations. As a result, wealth and power in your country is not spread evenly and many of your people live in poverty (are poor).

Of course, not all of your people are poor. Many, including you, are quite wealthy (rich). But your wealth depends largely on making deals with companies like Nike. When you get companies like Nike to invest (give) money into your country, you then get to steal some of this money and give it your friends and family. As a leader of your country, you want to make sure that you can continue to have a high standard of living and not worry about a coup d’état.

In order for your group to stay in power, you need to provide jobs for your people. The best way for you to create jobs is to get companies like Nike to build factories. The more jobs you can bring into your country, the easier it is for people to believe that you are the right ruler for them.

However, Nike doesn’t want to build a factory in your country because they feel bad for you, they are going to choose a country where they think they would make the most money.

Here’s the problem, you must compete with other poor countries in the room that also want Nike to build a factory. You are going to have to make tough decisions about what you are willing to offer Nike including:

What is the lowest amount someone can get paid in your country? How young can people be when they start to work? Can people ask for better working conditions? What percentage of money would your country get to keep? Does Nike have to protect the environment?

Investment Game RulesThis game takes place over a series turns/rounds. In each turn, countries compete to get Nike to choose their country to build the factory in.

During each round, teams will write a bid/proposal. Teams will need to make tough decisions about what their countries minimum wage (how much to pay workers), child labor (determine how young students can work), unions (people forming clubs to ask for things), taxes (how much money Nike should give the government), and the type of environmental laws that should exist.

After every country has submitted a bid, the bids will be ranked from highest number to lowest number. You won’t know until the end of the round what other groups have bid. The goal is to win the game by finishing up with the most game points at the end.

Nike is worried though, sometimes when they build a new factory, the people in the country become angry at how they are treated. Sometimes this anger turns into violence and lost profits. As a result, the team with the highest bid doesn’t earn the most points.

Your team may be the highest bidder once and not have to pay a fine. If you are the highest bidder again, you will role two dice. Whatever number you end up rolling, that is how many points you will lose!

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________5. Why did you not want to have the highest bid several rounds in a row?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________6. Is there anything I should change, if I do this next year with my students?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Create a line graph that shows your proposed minimum wage and tax rates throughout all five rounds. The X axis should be the rounds, the y axis should the price.

Do you notice any patterns or trends? Explain…

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Answer the following questions in paragraph form, on a separate piece of paper.
