From the principal Hi everyone – Enrol in TCS - We lead the way! A Whole School Project

Last week we were honoured to welcome Jack Randell at our school again to lead our school mural project. The aim of the project was to develop creative thinking and for the students to work as a whole school, both Primary and Secondary, towards creating a beautiful artwork that would enhance our school and also teach about the birds that live in Trangie and in our playground.

The first of our 4 murals are scheduled to be erected next Wednesday and I know that all students will feel both pride and a sense of accomplishment for having been a part of creating something so wonderful.

The strong sense of being part of a team and of belonging that exists at TCS is essential for strong mental health and is the reason for our reputation for excellence in Wellbeing. Students cannot learn if they do not feel valued and safe, and as one of the recognised top five schools in our system, we are excellent indeed.

The students loved being involved in this project and when you see the end result I know you will be as impressed as I am with what they achieved.

Bus Behaviour All students should be reminded that behaviour on school buses should be exemplary. Seat belts, if fitted, need to be worn at all times and the instructions of the driver followed. The school and the bus companies work together to ensure that students remain safe at all times, and also do not fail to meet the high expectations that our school has of all students wearing our uniform. There will be consequences imposed by our school if students fail to behave respectfully and safely on the bus.

From the principal TCS Tertiary Opportunity Prize At TCS we believe that providing further education, training and career opportunities has the power to change lives and enrich communities. Our Tertiary Opportunity Prize is dedicated to doing exactly this. We already have one beneficiary attending university and she will be able to claim the cost of textbooks and other study materials from her prize money. SchoolsPlus has been incredibly helpful in assisting us to establish our fundraising project, and with their coordination we have tax deductible status. All funds for this worthy cause are raised through donation and I have included the link below.

Project Link: https://www.schoolsplus.org.au/rewarding-commitment-learning-across-years-11-12/

THANKYOU – Everyone at TCS would like to thank our most recent donor, Mr Khushaal Vyas, from the NSW Law Society for his generous donation of $500. He wrote a lovely message on the site and has given his permission for me to include his sentiments on our newsletter.

Drought Relief Everyone at TCS would like to thank Wenona School in Sydney for raising funds to assist our students and ensure that they do not miss out on any educational experience. The $2350 that was raised has been used to reduce the cost of excursions per head as the cost of bus travel is so very expensive. I have written to Dr Scott, the Principal of the Wenona School and thanked her on behalf of our students. I would also like to thank Mr James Hamilton for promoting our cause.

Primary Interest Groups – Challenging our brains

Students of all ages meet together to develop problem solving strategies and pit their thinking powers against their peers in friendly competition, with Ms Ebsworth lending a guiding hand when needed.

Homework Club As always, our school is committed to providing the very best opportunities and support for our students. For this reason we will be beginning a Homework Club after school on Thursday afternoons from 3pm until 4pm in our school library. This is not an opportunity for playing computer games, but rather a chance to catch up on homework, seek help with unfinished classwork or work that is causing issues and access the resources available in our library. The Homework Club will be open to both secondary and primary students, manned by volunteers from our teaching staff. A drink and a snack will be provided, but students will be expected to remain for the whole hour unless picked up by a parent.

We will trial this opportunity and will continue if there is sufficient interest.

Finally …….. My door is and always has been open – whether you are happy, sad or mad. I need to know if we are not doing something right but I also need to know that you trust our motives and our intentions. Everything we do, every single day is for YOUR children. If we can do it better, tell us. Facebook is for cowards – so please tell us to our face!

All the best,

Anne Holden TCS – Endless Opportunities to Create, to Think and to Solve!

Having been returning to Trangie Central School when organising volunteer programs through the NSW Law Society, each time I am more and more amazed by the brilliant work the school is doing and the potential of its wonderful students. Such fundraising initiatives are incredibly important for equal opportunity and I look forward to supporting it each year.

Khushaal Vyas (NSW Law Society)

SECONDARY Head Teachers’ Report World of Maths The travelling road-show, World of Maths will be visiting our school tomorrow to provide a variety of practical challenges in mathematical problem solving to our students from Year 4 to Year 8. The students work in groups and navigate their way around workstations with hands-on activities that make learning maths fun. Field Studies and Excursions Some of our Senior students will soon be participating in excursions to Dubbo and the Warrumbungles National Park to further their understanding in Science subjects including Physics and Biology. These are valuable opportunities for students to gain knowledge of subject content and engage in practical tasks that compliments their learning in the classroom.

Once again, I encourage all permission notes to be returned promptly to the school. Ted Wright Head Teacher Brilliant Bowlers Bowled Out Last Friday saw the first round of the WSSA Mixed Lawn Bowls trials played at Trangie against Parkes High School.

Jarrod Kohlenberg, Logan Fraser and new member to the team, Kai Greenwood played Parkes in a very hard fought game with the lead changing end to end. The boys played well coming from behind five down at one point, to being equal and in front of the Parkes team, but unfortunately the boys went down in the last few ends. The final score was 20-11.

This sees our team bow out of this particular bowls comp, but there will be more competitions to come as the year progresses.

Jack Randell Visit

Last week we had the privilege of well renowned Dubbo regional artist Mr Jack Randell working collaboratively with our students in creating a mural. The mural depicts local native birds and flora in Trangie. Students were engaged in colour mapping painting techniques in producing the artwork that will be installed on school grounds in the coming weeks. Jack is becoming a familiar face in Trangie and you could say he has been our very own artist in residence. We look forward to the unveiling of the artworks and if you haven’t seen it already, check out another of Jack’s works titled The Travellers, located in the community park.

Year 9/10 PASS - Seniors Olympics

Last Thursday, our Year 9/10 PASS students had the privilege of working with the Trangie Local Aboriginal Land Council and Kurrajong Court to put on this years Seniors’ Olympics. The students were responsible for organising the activities for the athletes and enjoyed being able to help on the day. We look forward to being able to do it all again next year.

Contributing To Our Community

Primary students all love the opportunity to contribute to our community and make Trangie a great place to live. Last Friday each class got involved in Clean Up Australia Day. As a school we spent one hour, working on designated areas within our town. The younger classes mostly concentrated on the school grounds whereas the older children picked up rubbish along the highway, down alleyways and in our streets. The staff were impressed with how sensible the students were and how eager they were to ‘hunt out’ rubbish. The great news is that rubbish was quite hard to find which must mean that as a community we are more aware of looking after the planet!

On Tuesdays our children also go to visit the elderly residents at Kurrajong Court. When they are there they may perform songs that they’ve been learning in class, do a ‘show and tell’ about the things they are learning at school, read to the residents or even do activities like playing cards. It is so important that young people get to spend time with the elderly and by all accounts the residents really look forward to the students’ visits. The following timetable guides our visits throughout the year. Term 1 TCS Kurrajong Court Visits Tuesday afternoons 2.05pm-2.40pm

Our involvement with the ‘Meals on Wheels’ program continues and is seen as a rite of passage for our Year 6 students. Every Tuesday, two student volunteers travel around town with a meals on wheels driver, delivering food to elderly community members and having a little chat with the people they visit. This week Aston Gordon and Connor Mitchell joined Mr Sanders to deliver the meals. Our students are proud to connect with people, make a difference and develop empathy for other people.

On the 20th of February Year 6 went to ‘Check It Out Day’ at CSU in Dubbo. We completed different experiments. One of them was with a nurse who told us how to keep our hands clean and hygienic. We used a blue light to see the germs on our hands. Some results were really shocking!!! They took us to see their dentistry unit where you can go for any dental work which will be carried out by trainee students. They then showed us the rooms where university students stay throughout their 4 years studying and we went to the sports lodge where they had an indoor gym and recreational lounge. We had a rest here and some of us played pool. After that they took us to the theatre room where they give lectures and put a game of football on so we could see how well the screen worked. The last place we visited was the library. It was massive! There were 2 stories of floors and there was a lot of study equipment. It would be an awesome place to study one day.
