TA TESTING SUPPORTS

Student to TA Ratio OSPI recommends that the paper-pencil forms of the WCAS be administered to students in small groups. The student to Test Administrator (TA) ratio should be no greater than 3 students to 1 TA.

Testing Over Multiple Days OSPI recommends that the WCAS be administered in one session, during the course of 1 day. It is acceptable to administer the WCAS in two or three sessions, over 2-3 days. If the TAs approved testing schedule requires administering the test over the course of multiple days, there are two options for how to break the paper-pencil WCAS into parts:

1. Test for a specific amount of time for session one and session two, likely 45 minutes to 1 hour each. Then finish the test in session three if needed.

2. Have students stop at specific page numbers in the booklet for each session.

For both options, students should review all the questions they have answered during that session and be sure that their final answers are recorded in their booklets before stopping for

the day. When testing is resumed on a subsequent day, the students will not be able to return to any of the stimuli or questions they answered on the previous day(s).

The SAY script will have text for both options in [brackets] separated by OR. The TA will say the appropriate phrase for their testing schedule. Specific page numbers will be listed in the brackets if option 2 is chosen. For example:

“Today we will stop after [working for 55 minutes OR completing question X on page Y].”

Locking Items

Some questions on the WCAS are “locking items.” In the online testing system, the students are given a warning about these questions before they move forward in the test. Once students move forward, they will be able to look at their answer for a locked item, but the online system will prevent them from changing their answer.

To mimic this functionality in the paper-pencil test forms, locking items have a red box at the bottom of the page which states:

“THIS QUESTION WILL BE LOCKED AFTER COMPLETION.

You must answer this question before moving on to the next question. After you move to the next question, you cannot change your answer to this question.”

TAs must monitor students closely to ensure that they DO NOT change their answers after they move on in their test booklet.

Students can re-read the question, and their answer, but they cannot change their answer after they turn the page.

Specific question numbers will be listed in the specific grade level directions later in this document, to help TAs monitor these items.

This document contains the TA Script of Student Directions for the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) paper-pencil test form. This includes the standard print, large print, Spanish, and Braille test forms. It is required that TAs review the test specific script and directions prior to administering the WCAS. Contents of this document include best practices for testing (before, during, and after), and the student directions (SAY) boxes. THIS DOCUMENT IS TO BE USED FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY. A SECURE VERSION OF THIS DOCUMENT WILL BE DELIVERED WITH STUDENT TEST BOOKLETS, AND MUST BE USED TO ADMINISTER THE TEST.

BEST PRACTICES CHECKLISTS

Before Testing (day prior or morning of)

☐ For all before testing activities, refer to the Checklist for Test Administrators in Appendix A of the TAM.

☐ It is recommended to print the TA Script of Student Directions (SAY:) boxes prior to testing.

☐ TAs should maintain a natural classroom atmosphere during the test administration. Before each test begins, he or she should encourage students to do their best.

During Testing

☐ For all during testing activities, refer to the Checklists for Test Administrators in Appendix A of the TAM.

☐ Follow professional practices and test security protocols as outlined in the PIRG.

☐ At least one trained TA is required to supervise students at all times during the test session and until materials have been collected and accounted for. Students left unattended will have their test results invalidated.

☐ Provide all required paper-pencil tools, supports, and/or accommodations according to each student’s plan. If the correct features are unavailable, do not continue testing and notify your SC immediately.

☐ TAs must ensure that students do not have access to non-approved digital, electronic, or manual devices during testing.

☐ Break schedules should be followed according to the TAM. Additional breaks may be provided based on student needs and TA judgement.

• Students who have not completed the assessment must be monitored during breaks and lunches

☐ Should a testing incident occur during your session, you should stop testing immediately and notify your SC.

☐ Share your plan for students who finish early. How are materials processed and accounted for? Do students leave the testing room, and if so, where do they go? If students remain in the testing room, what quiet activity is available? Electronics are not permitted.

☐ Each test specific script must be used and followed exactly when a test is administered. When reading directions to students:

Do not paraphrase the directions.

Read the directions to students exactly as they are written, using a natural tone and manner. If you make a mistake in reading a direction, stop and say, “Listen again.” Then read the direction again. Never deviate from the directions as written. Deviating from the printed directions is a testing violation. Read all material printed in boxes next to the word SAY. The italicized text outside of the SAY boxes is information for you and should not be read to students.

You may repeat any part of these directions as many times as needed.

☐ Do not provide suggestions to students on how to respond to the task or evaluate student work.

☐ For detailed instructions on TA support that is permitted during testing sessions, see section Supplemental Student Directions During Testing.

After Testing

☐ Review early and follow the instructions in the Final Processing Steps for TAs section, prior to releasing students from the testing location.

SUMMATIVE: TA INSTRUCTIONS

Introduction This document is required to administer paper-pencil test forms of the WCAS.

TAs administering the WCAS must refer to the SECURE script for information needed to administer the standard print, large print, Spanish, and Braille test forms.

Ensuring Test Security

The security of the summative assessment instruments and the confidentiality of student information are vital to maintaining the validity, reliability, and fairness of the results.

All summative test items and test materials are secure and must be appropriately handled. This is a secure document. Secure handling protects the integrity, validity, and confidentiality of summative assessment items, prompts, and student information. Any deviation in test administration must be reported as a test incident to ensure the validity of the summative assessment results.

For more details regarding the WCAS test administration, see the TAM.

Monitoring Test Progress Once students have started their tests, TAs should circulate through the room to ensure all conditions of test security are maintained. If a TA witnesses or suspects a possible test security incident, the TA should stop the student’s test session and the SC should be contacted immediately in accordance your Test Security and Building Plan.

Supplemental Student Directions During Testing If a student asks for assistance with their paper-pencil test form, TAs are permitted to:

Final Processing Steps for TAs 1. If students are allowed to leave the testing

room when they finish testing, explain the procedures for leaving without disrupting others and where they are expected to report once they leave. Prior to releasing students who have completed their test, you must collect and account for all testing materials provided to students during this test session. If students are expected to remain in the testing room until the end of the session, instruct them on what activities they may engage in when finished testing. Electronic devices are not permitted.

2. For security reasons, only trained TAs may handle secure test materials.

3. Collect and account for all test booklets and individual ancillary materials as distributed and permitted for each test session (i.e., glossaries, scratch paper).

4. Per your testing plan, students who need more time may remain in the same testing room or move to another location to finish the assessment.

For students remaining in the same room, redistribute test materials and instruct students to continue with the assessment.

For students moving to a new location, go to the new location and then redistribute test materials and instruct students to continue with the assessment. Students are not permitted to transfer secure materials.

5. When testing has completed, promptly return all testing materials (e.g., secure TA script, test booklets, glossaries, scratch and graph paper) to your SC according to your school’s Test Security and Building Plan.

6. The student responses for the standard print, large print, and Braille forms must be transcribed from the test booklet into the Data Entry Interface system (DEI) by the TA or other district staff. Please refer to the DEI User Guide and the SECURE Item Specific Information in each grade-specific directions section for more information.

SUMMATIVE: STUDENT DIRECTIONS―WCAS Grade X Before beginning administration of the WCAS grade X, paper-pencil assessment, verify that you have all necessary materials to support this testing session:

☐ Verify that all test booklets have been identified to each student (pre-ID label).

☐ Verify quantities of materials to ensure that each student has:

His or her own test booklet, the Glossary of Non-Science Terms, scratch paper, and two sharpened No. 2 pencils with erasers.

☐ Ensure students know how or where to get other materials (e.g. calculators), as permitted by the test content or student plan (aligning to the GTSA).

TAs now:

☐ Read the SAY: directions verbatim to the students. Each SAY: box has a label to the left specifying whether the instruction pertains to the whole test (ALL) or to specific situations.

WCAS Grade X Directions Students’ desks must be clear of all items that are not permitted for testing.

ALL

SAY: Please make sure that your desk is cleared of all items. If you have a bag, cell phone, or any other electronic device, raise your hand and I will show you where to place it before the test begins. Use of a non-approved electronic device during this test session will need to be reported and your test may not be scored.

Pause. Show students where to place their electronics and bags and verify that work spaces have been cleared.

ALL

SAY: I am now going to pass out your test materials. Do not open your test booklet until I tell you to do so.

Pause. Distribute test booklets, one piece of scratch paper, two number 2 pencils with erasers, and the Glossary of Non-Science Terms to students. Make sure each student has their own test booklet. Calculators should be placed in an easy-to-access location.

Students will record their answers in their test booklet.

ALL

SAY: Please write your name in the top left corner of your Glossary of Non-Science Terms and scratch paper.

I will collect your paper at the end of the test session.

Look on the front cover of your test booklet and make sure your name is printed on the white label on the front cover. Raise your hand if you do not have the test booklet with your name on it.

Are there any questions? Pause to allow students time to write their names and verify materials. Assist students as needed.

ALL

SAY: Now you will take the Science Assessment.

You may only use a No. 2 pencil with an eraser when taking this test. Pens, highlighters, or other writing tools are not allowed.

Open your test booklet to page 3.

Do not read the sample questions aloud

ALL

SAY: We will begin by looking at three sample questions. Each sample shows what a certain type of question looks like in the test booklet and how to mark or write your answers.

Look at the Multiple Choice Sample Question on page 3. We can tell that this is a multiple-choice question because there are circles with letters inside them next to the answer choices. After reading this type of question, you will fill in the circle next to the best answer choice.

The correct answer for this sample question is C, “The water volume is larger than the ditch can hold during a heavy rainfall.” Therefore, the answer circle next to C is filled in. Fill in only one answer circle for a multiple choice question.

Are there any questions?

Pause to answer any questions.

ALL

SAY: Now turn to page 4 in your test booklet.

Pause. Make sure students are on the correct page.

ALL

SAY: Look at the Multiple Select Sample Question on page 4.

We can tell that this is a multiple-select question because there are empty squares next to the answer choices. When reading this type of question, look for the bold word in the question that tells you how many boxes you will need to select. After reading this type of question, you will check the boxes next to the best answer choices. You should check only the number of boxes given to you in the question, no more and no less.

This sample question says to check three boxes.

The correct answers for this sample question are, “A stream table allows all three solutions to be tested without waiting for heavy rainfall,” “A stream table tests all three solutions without affecting the environment around the ditch,” and “Testing with a stream table allows students to collect data more quickly than testing with the real ditch.” Therefore, the boxes next to those three responses are checked.

Are there any questions?

Pause to answer any questions.

ALL

SAY: Now look at the Editing Task with Choice Sample Question on page 5 in your test booklet.

Pause. Make sure students are on the correct page.

ALL

SAY: This type of item has boxes within sentences. The answer options inside the boxes complete the sentences. For this sample item, the words gene, protein, and trait are the three choices in both answer boxes. Sometimes there will be different options in the different boxes. Do you see the two boxes with those words? Raise your hand if you need help finding them.

Make sure that students see the two boxes with the options “gene, protein, trait.”

TA TRAINING Script of Student Directions—WCAS Grade X Paper-Pencil

9 | P a g e

ALL

SAY: After reading this type of question, you will fill in the circle next to the best answer choice in each box to complete the sentence. You will fill in only one circle per answer box.

The correct answer for this sample question reads, “A mutation changes the structure of the gene which can change the structure and function of the protein.” Notice that the answer circle next to the word “gene” was filled in for the first box, and the answer circle next to the word “protein” was filled in for the second box.

Are there any questions?

Pause to answer any questions.

When reading the next SAY box, please emphasize the words in bold text.

ALL

SAY: The three sample questions we just looked at are examples of most of the questions on this Science Assessment. There will be some other types of questions on this test, including questions that will ask you to fill in a table, draw on a picture, or write your answer on some blank lines. Read each question carefully for information about how to respond or mark your answer for those questions.

Some of the questions on this test have more than one part. You may need to turn the page to see Part B or Part C of the question.

Some of the questions on this Science Assessment are Locking Items. This means that you cannot change your answer to the question after you have turned to the next page of the booklet. These questions have a red warning box at the bottom of the page that starts with, “This question will be locked after completion.” Please make sure that you have given your best answer to these questions before you turn the page. Part of my job today is to watch and make sure that you do not change your answers to these questions after you turn the page.

If you need help with a specific question, please raise your hand. I cannot tell you if you have given the right or wrong answer, but I can help make sure that you have followed the directions for how to answer the question.

You must mark your answers to questions in this test booklet. You may also mark, underline, or circle key words in this test booklet as long as it does not interfere with any answer space.

Are there any questions?

For additional information, refer to Locking Items on page 3 of this document.

Pause to answer any questions. When you are sure that the students understand the directions, continue.

As stated in the Testing Over Multiple Days section, the WCAS can be administered to students over 1, 2, or 3 days of testing. The next page has SAY boxes for how to begin student testing in these three scenarios (1, 2, or 3 days). The section Finishing a Paper Test Session has SAY boxes for how to stop and (if needed) resume testing in these three scenarios.

Monitoring Testing

☐ As students are testing, you should circulate through the room to ensure that all conditions of test security are maintained and that students are working independently. This includes ensuring that students DO NOT change their answers to Locking Items after turning to the next page in the test booklet.

☐ When a student is off task or asks for assistance, refer to the Supplemental Student Directions During Testing section for SAY: directions, page 4.

SECURE, Specific Item Information

This section has information to help you, the TA, when students have questions about specific items. Remember, you cannot tell the students if they have given the right or wrong answer, but you can help to make sure that they have followed the directions for how to answer the question.

The column “What to SAY during testing” contains supplemental student directions that the TA can say to the student as the student is testing. This can be in response to a student question, or if the TA notices that the student is not following the item directions. Text regarding Locking Items from the Supplemental Student Directions During Testing section has been included in the first two rows. Locking items are then noted in specific rows later in the table. (Secure information will only be in this table in the SECURE document that arrives with student booklets.)

The column “When entering into DEI” contains information that might be helpful when the student responses in the standard print, large print, and Braille forms are transcribed from the test booklet into the Data Entry Interface system (DEI) by the TA or other district staff. Please refer to the DEI User Guide for more information.

The question numbers are the same for all four paper-pencil test forms (standard print, large print, Spanish, and Braille). The page numbers may be different in the Braille form than what is listed in this table. One question on the grade 5 Braille form has a different way for the student to respond; that difference will be noted on the line for that question.

Table 1 Grade X SECURE

Question Page What to SAY during testing When entering into DEI

Locking Items: If a student asks about the red warning box at the bottom of their page, say:

“This is a locking question. You will not be able to change your answer to this question after you turn to the next page. Make sure you have given your best answer before you move on.”

Locked Items: If a student tries to change their answer after they have moved on to the next page, say:

“This is a locking question. You have already turned to the next page. You can re-read the question, and look at your answer, but you are not allowed to change your answer to this question.”

This is the end of the SECURE, item specific information for grade X.

When you continue in your booklet [tomorrow OR subsequent day] to finish your test, you will not be able to go back and change your answers to any question you have answered today. Please raise your hand if you need to check your work one more time.

When you are done, please put your pencil down. Put all papers you used during this test inside the front cover and close your test booklet. Make sure the top of your papers are showing.

I will now collect your test materials.

If your testing schedule is for a specific amount of time testing (not stopping at specific page/item numbers)

then you must take note of where each student stopped working in their booklet today. When students continue in their booklet during session 3, they must begin working on the next page. Write down which page number each student will begin working on, in the blank space provided in the Day 3 directions, before securely storing the materials.

You must follow your school’s Test Security and Building Plan for where to securely store student test materials until the next day of student testing.

Continuing Testing on Day 3

Students’ desks must be clear of all items that are not permitted for testing.

ALL

SAY: Please look on the front cover of your test booklet. Raise your hand if you do not have the test booklet with your name on it.

Pause to allow students time to verify their materials. Assist students as needed.

ALL

SAY: You will finish the Science Assessment today.

You may only use a No. 2 pencil with an eraser when taking this test. Pens, highlighters, or other writing tools are not allowed. You may continue to use the Glossary of Non-Science Terms and your scratch paper; I will collect your papers at the end of the test session.

You can review the Sample Questions on pages 3, 4, and 5 of your test booklet, but you cannot look at or change your answers to any of the test questions that you answered before today.

Please raise your hand if you need to pause and take a short break during testing.

Remember, you may not change your answers for locking items after you have turned to the next page in the booklet. When you finish, please check your work and make sure there are no unanswered questions. Then raise your hand.

Are there any questions?

[Pause to answer any further questions.]

Now turn to [page _____________________ OR page Y] in your test booklet and begin your test.

Make sure students are on the correct page.

Monitor student testing and address questions using the information on page 11 of this TA Script as you did on the previous day of testing.
