Most recently, Morgan was honored with the 2008 Thomas Wolfe Prize from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the ninth winner of the Thomas Wolfe Prize medal, which recognizes contemporary writers for their distinguished bodies of work.

In 2007, Morgan was chosen for an Academy Award in Literature by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Morgan said the academy honor is “particularly thrilling to me because you’re chosen by your fel-low writers at the national level, so it’s recognition by your peers. It’s a very distinguished list.” The award committee wrote, “A storyteller with an eye for detail, impeccable ear for language, devotion to craft and pas-sion for truth, Robert Morgan has written poetry and fiction of great distinction for many years.”

Morgan has previously won a Gug-genheim fellowship, a Rockefeller Foundation fellowship, and three Na-tional Endowment for the Arts grants. Other awards include the James B. Hanes Poetry Prize, the North Caro-lina Literature Award, and a 1997 O. Henry Award. Further information re-garding Robert Morgan can be found at http://robert-morgan.com.

FEATURED DATABASEScienceDirect is a database provided by Elsevier, so you may hear it referred to as Elsevier ScienceDirect, but it’s all the same resource. This database contains the full text for a variety of journals. According to their site, “ScienceDirect contains over 25% of the world’s science, technology and medicine full text and bibliographic information.” This database covers numerous subject areas, but the strengths of the database currently lie in life sciences, engineering, earth sciences, pharmacology, and textiles. It is truly a valuable resource, so give ScienceDirect a try. If you would like more information about this database or need assistance using the database, please contact us at 782-8034.FEATURED E-BOOKSThe following are just a few of the titles to which the Library has recently acquired online access. FEATURED DVDSMany of you may know about our Audio Visual Center’s educational video collection. However, the AV Center has other titles you might not have on your radar. Since we are in the heart of the football season, you might want to take a timeout with Friday Night Lights; or if horse power is your game, how about taking a run with Seabiscuit? If you’re in need of a queen, then Elizabeth is the right card to play. Make plans to take a Crash course in The DaVinci Code, Babel, Black Hawk Down, or take time to admire A Beautiful Mind. If the Sound of Music sounds good to you, then sing along with West Side Story or Chicago; while in the city you might want to ride A Streetcar Named Desire or mourn the Death of a Salesman. If real life is what you seek, try Hotel Rwanda, Mississippi Burning, or fight with the Band of Brothers, Saints and Soldiers, or Gods and Generals. I’m not sure about you, but my wardrobe at home looks small at times, so perhaps we could enlarge it with The Chronicles of Narnia. All these titles and more are available on DVD at your Library. Come check out a story today!

This Fall, the Library Instruction Committee, chaired by Charlcie Pettway Vann, held a series of brown bag lunches to familiarize students and faculty with Library services. The first program, presented by Ms. Vann, was held on 8 September, and demonstrated how to navigate the Library catalog and newly-updated website. On 15 September, Jodi Poe, Distance Education/Electronic Resource Manager, showed patrons how to use remote services to access databases and other Library resources from home. The following week Harry Nuttall and Laurie Charnigo Phillips presented on MLA citation and the new APA citation style. The month wrapped up with Carley Suther’s presentation on ALLIES (the consortial borrowing agreement between Auburn, AUM, UA, and UAB) and interlibrary loan, as well as tips on using WORLDCAT. Upcoming programs include a presentation on 19 November by Simon Bevis of Noah Valley Farm on locally grown, organic foods; a volunteerism lecture by David Zeigler and Ron Hindman on 14 January; and a talk by Barbara Curry, the first African American to enroll at JSU, on 4 February. Please contact Charlcie Pettway Vann at 782-8434 or [email protected] if you are interested in presenting a brown bag lunch at the Library.
