Inspirelifes Cancer Care ProgramDr. eresa Clarke, lead physician, and Paul Paddon, pro-
gram manager or InspireHealth BC, were in Nelson on Oc-tober 1 to speak to an enthusiastic audience about Integra-tive Cancer Care. We dropped into a piece o heaven, wasthe opening comment rom Dr. Clarke on her frst visit tothe Kootenays.
InspireHealth oers evidenced-based research, and anntegrative approach to cancer prevention and recurrence.
Te session was attended by many Kootenay people lookingor answers to the cancer crisis in their lives.
Dr. Clarke shared with the audience her journey to In-spireHealth and her realization that in her medical trainingvery little time had been given to showing how to get well.Although not an oncologist, she has become a passionateadvocate or people being involved in their own medicalourney with cancer. InspireHealth has been in Vancouver
since 1997 and has now expanded provincially with newcentres in Victoria and Kelowna. New centres are plannedto open in both Abbotsord and Kamloops and there is alsoInspireLIFE BC, the organizations virtual centre.
raditionally cancer is treated by chemotherapy, radiationand surgery. Dr. Clarke sees the tumor as only a small parto who you are and that our aim is to support your immunesystem and improve the health o the body as a whole. AtInspireHealth, people with a diagnosis o cancer are en-gaged in their own health care through a patient-centredapproach that supports healthul nutrition, exercise, stressreduction and patient empowerment. InspireHealths pro-grams are evidence-based, and apply leading-edge immunesystem research to optimize cancer healing and recovery.
Some o the new research presented to the enthusiasticand curious audience showed that many simple changes canmake a big dierence in the prevention o cancer. Vitamin D,through getting out in the sun or 15 to 20 minutes a day ortaking a supplement, can reduce the risk o prostate cancerby 57% and may positively aect the treatment outcomes orbreast cancer. Group counseling or a support group allowsbreast cancer patients more ability to cope with stress. Tentake o high dietary fbre, in particular rom cereal oods,
can decrease the risk o colon cancer. wice weekly exercis-es, including both aerobic and strength training or as littleas 1 hour each, can help improve the physical unction andquality o lie or cancer patients undergoing treatment.
Paul Paddon explained the virtual centre outreach con-cept. It includes a two-day LIFE Program which will be inNelson on Tursday, November 15 and Friday, November16. Room is available or 20 cancer patients and their am-ilies to delve into the changes they can make in their jour-ney with cancer. Drs. eresa Clarke and Joseph Schnurr will
be there to develop a ull and individualized wellness planwith each patient. Stemming rom the program, each pa-tient will receive a 90-minute consultation with the doctors, assistance with decision-making about treatment, completeliestyle review and recommendations, individual nutrition-al counseling, stress reduction practices, powerul sharedlearning programs, and the benefts o the InspireLIFEcommunity, including ongoing classes in cooking, nutri-tional support, yoga, relaxation, vitamins and supplements.InspireHealths goal is simple to provide the best care pos-sible or people living with cancer, and they will work with
you, your amily doctor and oncologist.Dr. Clarke concluded the evening session with a reerenceto the adage, Listen to your Grandma. Her advice includedmany ideas on what we now know is both sage advice andgood practice in prevention o cancer or recurrence. Eatyour veggies; take time to relax; have a cup o tea and inparticular green tea, one o the most powerul natural anti-oxidants known; avoid bad ats; cut back on your salt intake;cook your own meals so you know what is in them; avoidoods where you cannot pronounce the name o the ingredi-ents; do not use non-stick cookware; get your exercise at
least 30 minutes a day o moderate exercise such as walking;get good, uninterrupted sleep in a dark room; sing, danceand laugh each day.
Te cancer journey is not solely about surviving, it isabout living and thriving.
