The Beauty Of Book ClubsEver wondered how to start a book club, or how to

nd one to join? Te beauty of book clubs is that theycan deepen our appreciation of literature and spark dis-cussion beyond the themes of the books we are reading.Bonus: they are also a perfect reason to get together withour friends on a regular basis.

On Tursday, October 15, the Nelson Public Librarywill host a presentation on the Beauty of Book Clubs aspart of the library’s ongoing Slocan Valley Outreach pro-

gram. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event.Val Mayes will moderate a panel of representatives from

book clubs in the Valley, who will discuss the differentformats that clubs can take, and the dos and don’ts forstarting one.

Outreach librarian Margaret essman will be on handto talk about library resources that are available to supportocal book clubs. For example, did you know that library

members can order book club sets of ve or ten copiesthrough the Nelson Library?

As usual, the Outreach library’s mobile collection ofbooks, CDs and DVDs for all ages will be available formembers to check out. Refreshments will be served.

Te Beauty of Book Clubs will take place at 4 pm atPassmore Seniors Lodge, 3650 Passmore Road. Watch forthe sandwich board on the highway. For more informa-tion contact the Nelson Public Library, 250-352-6333, orVal Mayes, 250-226-7399.

Balfour Transfer Station Re-OpenedTe RDCK is pleased to announce the Balfour transfer

station reopened with full services Saturday, October 3.Upgrades to the RDCK’s Balfour waste transfer stationwere an important part of the RDCK’s 2010 ResourceRecovery Plan. Construction at the Balfour ransfer Sta-tion began August 3. Balfour will be open for regular win-

ter operating hours of Monday, Wednesday and Saturdayfrom 10 am to 4 pm.

Construction at the Balfour ransfer Station involvedinstallation of a weigh scale and new waste bins. Te newbins are part of an effi cient compacting waste transfersystem, which will reduce the costs and greenhouse gasemissions associated with the RDCK Resource recoveryservices. With the addition of the scale attendants will beable to weigh the materials instead of estimating volumes.Tis will allow residents to deposit their waste much faster, reducing wait times and ensuring consistent pricing.

“We are pleased that these upgrades have gone sosmoothly and that the transfer station will be more conve-nient and effi cient for residents,” says om Newell, Chairof the Central Subregion Resource Recovery Committee.

If you have any questions please contact the RDCK at250-352-6665 or check out our website at www.rdck.caFor further information, please contact Mike Morrison,Resource Recovery Manager at 250-352-8168.
