Snow change for our youth

Recently Coober Pedy had a visit from a group called thePinnacle of Terror. Pinnacle of Terror is a youth suicideand drug abuse prevention program, developed byDelhuntie Park Youth Centre Inc. The two-part Holisticprogram challenges participants through adventure, teambuilding and character development.

Church, Grant Holtham, Brooke Doran and all the parentsthat tagged along. The youth of Coober Pedy enjoyed theworkshop and hope to see The Pinnacle of Terror againin the future.

Some of the challenges were: Step of fear; a wobbly, fivemeter high, vertical ladder that participants climb and, upon reaching the top, pose no-handed for the team below.Rock Climb: seven meter vertical climb including twometer overhang section. Leap of Faith: participants leapfrom a small platform seven meters above the ground toa trapeze bar three meters in front of them. The participantthen hangs upside down from the bar.

Youth also participated in team building exercises, whichmade them think outside the box and work together as agroup.

The group did a two day workshop at the FamilyRecreation Hub, with a BBQ at the Community Youth Shedon Friday. I would like to thank all the volunteers thathelped with the program.

It has been 27 years since the School has takena group of youth to the snow. This year in July, eight of the Coober Pedy Area School studentsgot to go away on a 10 day trip to the snow. Ittook around 25 hours in travel to get there butit was well worth the effort, with all the youthseeing snow for the first time.

Pinnacle of Terror challenge

The students were all well behaved on the trip, andall contributed to a fantastic camp. With an evennumber of girls and boys, each group becamecompetitive towards each other. There werechallenges between ten pin bowling and who cookedthe best dinner. Lamb and pork roast, beef stir-fryand spaghetti bolognaise were the best dinners onthe camp.

A big thank you to Mr Kenny’s parents who let usstay at their house and who cooked us a deliciouslasagne. All up the students had a wonderful timeand are hoping to go back in the future.

For 5 days, students were learning how to snowboard. Some students became pro’s going down afew of the more challenging runs whereas otherswere happy to stay on the beginner’s hill.

By the end of the trip we had one person with twodislocated shoulders, another had a fractured wrist, and everyone else had sore bottoms from hittingthe snow too many times.

Councillors may recall that a letter regarding theCancer Council Car Rally was included in the Julyagenda.

Since the July meeting I have had discussions with MrJames Freeman who is the organiser for this event.

The Cancer Council car rally will be passing throughCoober Pedy on the 4th May 2013 and will consist of 200vehicles and 400 people.Mr Freeman advises that CooberPedy will be the first stop on the first day of the rally andthey would like to make it a special evening.

Mr Freeman has asked council to consider the possibilityof allowing the rally to use the town oval as their venue. He assures me that no vehicles will be driven on the ovaland no tent pegs will be used. The proximity of the ovalto town and the fact that it is protected, has sufficient carparking for the rally cars, has showers and toilets, andhas a stage area is ideal for their needs. The intention is toalso include the Coober Pedy community in their activities

Strategic Plan Review

The District Council of Coober Pedy has commenced areview of its current strategic plan document 2007 - 2012.

This review will set the policy direction objectives of theCouncil for the next 4 to 5 year period. Part of thisimportant process includes the linking of long termfinancial and asset management plans to the document toenable integrated sustainable outcomes to be determined. The revised plans will then be considered into the futurewhen drafting annual business plans and associatedbudgets.

Council has enlisted the help of consultants to helpfacilitate the review, which includes consultation meetingswith key stakeholders and the general public. This processenables important third party input into shaping the futuredirection of Coober Pedy and there are many national, state and local issues that require consideration.

Members of the public are invited to attend a workshopmeeting at the TAFE campus on Tuesday evening betweenthe hours of 7pm to 9pm on the 18th September 2012.

as much as possible.

The rally will cover all costs associated with hire of theoval and facilities as well as spending a considerableamount of money in the town for fuel, food, drink, etc.Mr Freeman is prepared to put council in touch with othercouncils whose ovals and facilities they have used if werequire references.

After speaking with Mr Freeman I believe in would be inthe best interests of the rally and Council to have the eventbased at the town oval.

I seek some indication from Council as to yourpreparedness for the facilities to be used for this event.

Where did the name of your street come from?

Part 13 in a series - by Sue Britt

Coober Pedy Streetand Road Names

WARD STREET is named for Government GeologistMr L Keith Ward. When 14-year old Willie Hutchisondiscovered opal in February 1915, he also foundenough water for the men and camels to stay on inthe area for a week.

By March 1917, the first of these wells, Jungle Well, inthe centre of a 10-acre reserve north of the diggings, hadbeen sunk to a depth of 78 ft. A further 100 ft of handboring resulted in finding water that was too salty to drink.(The Discovery of Coober Pedy) Distillation of the saltywater was not possible due to the scarcity of fuel to heatit.

The year 1919 brought rain. News of rain brought anopal rush. Men released from railway construction, returned soldiers and strikers from the mines in BrokenHill came with their camels and horses. L K Ward wasDirector of Mines by then and he supported the newly-formed Progress Committee in the establishment ofsanitation practices. As the well sinking project had failedto find potable water, the construction of a concrete tankin a catchment area was mooted.

In his official report, L K Ward recorded that the value ofopal won from the fields increased from £750 in 1916 to£52,425 by the end of 1920.

The population rapidly increased to about 400, an amazingnumber of people considering the lack of water. It wasMr L Keith Ward’s support at a state government levelthat was instrumental in converting the opal fields to atownship.

The members of the New Colorado Prospecting Syndicatespent the time gouging the hills nearby searching for thesource of the floaters found by the boy. The opal theyfound was taken to opal buyer Tully Wollaston and alsoto L K Ward, who in March, 1915, declared the find a‘highly encouraging one.’ He said the specimens were‘quite the best obtained in South Australia.’ He furtherrecommended that the Minister of Mines (Sir RichardButler) support the ‘careful and systematic prospectingof the find’.

In October 1916, Mr Ward came to the Stuart RangeOpal Fields to inspect living and mining conditions. Hefound the O’Neill brothers who had pegged several 40acre blocks in Big Flat Field soon after they arrived inMay 1915. They were always struggling with the watersupply, or the lack of it.

In the 3 years after the discovery of opal the averagerainfall was less than 1 inch. The O’Neills were “usingwater only for drinking and didn’t even dampen a cloth towipe their faces.” (Hard Liberty) Their partner, FredBlakeley, recorded how they saved and reused every dropof water. If it had not been for a lucky thunderstormenabling the men to bail water out of the crabholes intotheir tanks, they may well have perished.

Realising that it was crucial to secure a water supply,‘Ward drew up an agreement with the O’Neill brothers tosink four wells at a price of 30 guineas per foot.’ Theyused camel power to raise the buckets of dirt.

The 2012 Coober Pedy Races provided a greatopportunity for parents living in Outback SA to cometogether for RICE (Remote Isolated Children’sExercise) activities.

While RICE has been supporting families and youngchildren in remote and Outback South Australia since 1976,it was the first time in its recent history that the organisationhosted its management committee meeting outside of PortAugusta.

Oh Adam, Adam – You had more lives than a cat butfinally and fatefully you have now left us. Doing whatyou loved – Driving fast, this time too fast. But I’msure you will mount an argument against that opinion. How you loved an argument.

You arrived in Oodnadatta with camels and Lynnie. You leaveus in a motor vehicle having fathered four of the loveliestpeople anyone could meet.

Adam, you personified the term, “thinking outside the square”decades before it became a fashionable public servicestatement.

In the 1970s’ tourists were locally commonly described as‘terrorists’, yet you encouraged them (whether the roads werewet or dry!) and what a valuable asset tourism has becometo the Outback. Your remotely located, life saving, pinkinformation signs were welcome relief for geographicallyembarrassed travellers.

Your understanding of occupational health and safety waslimited to wearing thongs and T shirt as you welded yetanother piece of recycled junk iron into something useful.

Adam, many a copper, government bureaucrat and somepoliticians finalised their day with an exasperated: “BloodyAdam…….” As you breached, broke or just blatantly ignoredanother (stupid?) government rule or regulation.

If there was a light coming into Oodnadatta at 3.00 a.m. itwas generally Adam returning with the supply truck or mailrun as your days were timeless. They had to be in order tosurvive financially or to continue to do all those unnoticedthings that keep a Community alive.

Thank you Adam for being just that… ‘Adam’ and may theOutback continue to develop a smattering of ‘Adams’.

To the Plate Ladies who have now tragically lost both theirmen folk. Our hearts go out to you, floating on some tears.Adam wouldn’t want any tears but, “damn you Adam, someof us just can’t help it.”

The Ankata underground mine at Prominent Hill wasofficially opened by Premier Jay Weatherill on Friday17 August

The $148m mine was constructed to target a high-gradedeposit located west of the existing open pit at theProminent Hill copper-gold operation.

Mr Weatherill said OZ Minerals’ operations in the state’snorth were a true example of how companies can sharethe benefits of the mining boom with surroundingcommunities and the state.

“OZ Minerals shows how the resource and energyindustries in the 21st Century can lead the way in showinghow to share the benefits of resources development withSouth Australian communities,” he said.

“This new mine will add a further 220 jobs to its 1200-strong workforce even more pleasing is that employmentopportunities have remained locally-focused, withapproximately 80 percent of the OZ Minerals’ workforceliving in South Australia.”

“OZ Minerals also runs many programs aimed ateducating their employees and give active support forpeople who might otherwise not have been able to sharein the mining boom by finding meaningful work here atProminent Hill.”

“OZ Minerals has set such an example in these fields thatI had the pleasure, only a few weeks ago, of presentingthe company with the industry’s own award for excellencein Social Inclusion.”

“Prominent Hill is a world-class copper and gold depositand South Australia also has several other major approvedprojects under construction that in their own right will besignificant drivers for investment, infrastructure, skillsand new jobs.”

OZ Minerals Managing Director and CEO Terry Burgesssaid the commencement of the Ankata underground mineis a significant milestone for OZ Minerals and is a highlyvaluable addition to Prominent Hill.

Whether it’s a prescription or an over-the-countermedicine, it is critical that medicines for children aremeasured accurately. Young children are more sensitiveto the effects of medicines than adults, because theirbodies are smaller and not well developed. Even smallmeasuring errors can cause large differences in the amountgiven, which can cause serious harm.

Always read the labelKnow the active ingredient names so you don’t doubleup. Always choose a medicine suitable for the child’s ageand read the instructions on the pack.

On 11th August, 2012, EileenKampakuta Brown passedaway in her home at UmoonaAged Care, Coober Pedy. She was 80. Eileen dedicatedher life to the preservation, revival and teaching ofAnangu culture with agenerosity of spirit thattouched everyone that knewher. A courageous andhumble woman, Eileen alwayslead Inma - traditional dancefor her country, her peopleand everyone’s future. Shetravelled everywhere to tell herstory and spoke up stronglyagainst the Government’splans to build a nuclear wastedump in South Australia.

The Early Days -

always on the moveEileen Brown was born around 1932 toYankunytjatjara parents east of Iltur - Coffin HIll. Notlong after she was born the family travelled eastthrough the spinifex and sandhill country ‘Ananguway’ by tjina – foot, living off the land. They passedthrough Fregon and Pira Mili - Mimili before reachingAlpanyinta - Sailors Well, where they settled formany years.

“It’s from our Grandmothers and our grandfathersthat we’ve learned about the land. My Grandfatherand mother looked after that land - that was theirmanta.

Now I am talking on behalf ofthem, so that the kids canhave it behind when we leaveit. My grandchildren, daughters and sons.”

One day Eileen decided to run away to WintinnaStation to reunite with her family. She packed all herdresses and blankets into a pillowcase and earlythe next morning she slipped away. She followed

sheep tracks all the way toWintinna and when she saw theulpuru – dust she knew she wasclose. “At dinner time, kalala, midday, I heard a dog bark. Aie!I went around a big waterhole. Onthe tree I saw some young girljust across. She didn’t see me.Eileen Crombie yaadangka – inthe yard.”

Everyone there was so happy tosee her and she sat down by thewarm fireside they shared tea anddamper. From Wintinna Eileenwent on to work at many of thebig pastoral stations acrossnorthern South Australia such asAckaringa, Evelyn Downs,Oodnadatta and MountWilloughby.

It was at Mount Willoughby thatEileen met her future husbandTommy Brown. “Every morningukara tjuta – we young girls, usedto swim in the waterhole. Thisday, I had a petticoat on and apretty dress. There was some-

body sitting down near. Eileen Crombie and I, wewere swimming in the waterhole. I was the last oneto go in. And afterwards, while we were swimming,we saw who it was sitting there. It was Tommy Brown. When I came out of the water, I saw a glass shining.Eileen Crombie and a lot of kids were there but hegot the mirror right on to me. I was shamed andducked again, I went down again into the water swim-ming. Every time I came up out of the water, he’dshine the mirror again.”

Soon after the day at that waterhole Eileen left MountWilloughby working again at Alpalyinta, Wintinna andWallatina. Tommy Brown returned to his home atOodnadatta, but not long after, tracked Eileen downat Wallatina and gave her a present. “It was a littlebag, a pretty bag; scented soap, glass, lovelycomb… My mind went back to the time when he wasshining the glass, shining the mirror towards me asI was swimming. Suddenly I remembered, ‘Oh! Hemust have put that very mirror in there, in the littlebag for me.’”

Later they were married firestick marriage – Ananguway. Eileen left her job, rolled up her swag and withTommy they travelled to Evelyn Downs and ontoCoober Pedy. “And so we travelled along with thecamels, travelling and camping, travelling andcamping till we reached Coober Pedy. We had beenmarried Anangu way. Now in Coober Pedy we gotmarried in the Church, in the Lutheran Church.”

Kupa Piti Kungka TjutaIn the late 1980s Eileen joined the Kupa Piti KungkaTjuta, Senior Aboriginal women’s council of CooberPedy. Eileen Unkari Crombie, Ivy Makinti Stewartand Emily Munyungka Austin had founded thecouncil because they were worried about the lossof the traditional culture, especially for the youngerAnangu women living in town.

The Kungkas worked tirelessly throughout the 1990swith little resources to share important women’scultural knowledge, saying at the time, “We knowwhat we are doing and what we are trying to do isvery important. We don’t want our culture to die. Wewant it to give strength to the land and also strengthto ourselves, to our children and grandchildren whowill have something more than video games, drinkingand drugs and walking the street… And we knowthat our Aboriginal culture is very important, not justfor Anangu but for our beautiful country, Australia.’Eileen Brown became an invaluable member of thegroup, contributing to their collective achievementsby sharing her extensive cultural knowledge andinspiring many younger women to get involved.

Irati wanti –

The poison leave it

It was at one of the Kungkas weekly meetings thatthe Senior Women learned the Federal Governmentwanted to build a nuclear waste dump not far fromCoober Pedy.

Eileen Crombie remembered the meeting, “We wentwild. Straight out we said wanti – leave it. We wereall saying it must be deadly poison if they want tobring it all the way over here, and we were frightenedproperly.”

Many of the women were talking immediately abouttheir experiences of the atomic tests. “We’ve hadenough poison, enough sickness, from the bomb.We knew enough about the irati – poison from whenwe were young girls. We knew we had to fight it.”

Remembering the atomic testsOn the morning of October 15, 1953 the BritishGovernment detonated an atomic bomb called TotemOne at Emu Junction, a flat claypan 280 kms north-west of Coober Pedy. Eileen Brown was living atWallatina at the time and recalled the day clearly,“Westward we noticed the smoke when the sun wasgoing down. We were all watching the sun goingdown funny. We thought the farmers were burningstumps, cleaning them up… We could see the lightclear. Smelling a different smell… We got up in themorning from the tent…

Everyone had red eyes. Right here the smokecaught us, it came over us. Us lot.. We tried to openour eyes in the morning but we couldn’t open them.We had red eyes and tongues and our coughingwas getting worse.”

Eileen Kampakuta Brown AMEulogy

Eileen in 1968 at Indulkana

“It was here at Alpanyinta that I grew up. I wasworking – I learnt whitefellas’ work, work with thesheep… We stopped at Alpanyinta until I was grownup. And then Mr. Marousen took us to WelborneHill Station for work. I just worked inside the house– washing dishes, washing the clothes, sweepingthe floor. Everything! No mop – no, we shined thefloor on our knees! I learned English there atWellbourne Hill with the whitefella boss. Like he’dsay, ‘Get a bucket and bring it!’ and ‘Boil the water!’.I kept this katangka – in my memory. Just that waywe learned English. No school. We had our brainsthough.”

For their honeymoon themarried couple caughtthe train fromOodnadatta to Mareeand together theycontinued to travel andwork across the country, caring for many children.Tommy Brown was aminister and he had aHome Church atIndulkana, Oodnadattaand Mimili. “We weremarried a long time, myhusband and I. Weweren’t in love at first butI learnt to love him later. But he was already inlove with me. When I wasa young girl until hepassed away, I had onlythat one love. Nobodyelse.”

The injured navigator Patrick Chan was airlifted to hospitalwith injuries after the accident which occurred just after1pm (ACST).

Adam Plate and Patrick Chan were entered in theSUPALOC Early Modern event and were tipped to comein third by fellow rally enthusiasts.

On Tuesday 21 August Adam sent an enthusiastic pictureto the Coober Pedy Regional Times from his iphone. Adamand Patrick had been busy preparing for the event.

Adam pointed out that the cars stickers promote theOodnadatta Track area and SA Outback.

“We’re true to the outback,” said Adam. “We’re runninga Four Wheel Drive!”

Rally organisers and the Confederation of Australian MotorSport have issued a statement, saying they are deeplysaddened about the death and working with authorities asthey investigate the circumstances.

In 2009 Adam and his close friend Trevor Wright ofWrightsair Air Charter at William Ck (navigator) enteredAdam’s 1983 Porsche Targa into the 2009 Classic AdelaideTarmac Rally to promote the Outback and for 4 days ofhard driving through the Adelaide Hills. The class theyentered was “Thorougbred Touring”.

Since their arrival at Oodnadatta 38 years ago, Adam andhis wife Lynnie have revolutionized the way travelers areable to access the remotest of areas in the far north, fighting long and hard for better road conditions.

Travelers, 4wd explorers and locals have considered Adamto be synonymous with the outback. From his home andbase at the the Pink Roadhouse in Oodnadatta, Adam hasrendered the outback safe and made it possible for 4wd’sto travel into the Simpson Desert.

With his wife Lynnie by his side, Adam provided a vitalrescue and repair service, remote signage, mud maps, information as well as a warm fire or a swimming pool intimes of flood, fire or extreme heat. Travellers found ahome away from home there.

Adam continually lobbied the state government for betterroad conditions for pastoralists and travellers alike

The Oodnadatta Track was named by Adam Plate around1980 to become consistent with the Birdsville andStrzelecki Tracks which link together forming afascinating tourist route.

I'll always remember Adam with his wry smile, his casualwit, his contagious chuckle and his dry sense of humour. With his wisdom born from experience, his ingenuity andlegendary hospitality, he was the epitome of the Australianoutback.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of 44 gallon drumlids and signs across the outback, secured to star droppersand driven into the ground. All of them emblazoned with"The Pink Roadhouse - Oodnadatta" and some insightfullocal knowledge or a little piece of otherwise unknownhistory about the location. These rustic, handwritten, unauthorised signs will be a tribute to Adam, forever Ihope. They will remain as testament to the outback spiritthat he embodied and be a constant reminder of one ofthe characters that opened this region up.

Each time I drive past one of those old signs, wherever Imay be in the outback, I'll see you there mate, dressed inyour cap, work shirt, shorts and thongs. You'll have cansof pink and white paint and your sledge hammer on hand. You'll give me a smile and a wave... and I'll be wavingback.

I'll miss you Adam. The outback is certainly a smallerplace without you.

With the fondest of memories

Steve Staines - Coober Pedy

The outback is a lesser place today due to the partingfrom this world of a true legend. Adam Plate was aman who built something from nothing.

Adam made a home, brought up a wonderful family andbuilt a tourism icon in a business, social and geographicalenvironment that most people would cringe from. Theyliked to visit but never stayed. He thrived where othersfeared to tread. He kept a town on the map and createdthe now legendary “Oodnadatta Track”.

He loved the outback with a passion and that passion wasinfectious. He loved the outback's beauty and the freedomthat its remoteness brought. He never had much time formeetings. Adam was a man of action. Sometimes he tookaction before he got the right permit or license or piece ofpaper. This occasionally landed him in hot water but he

Adam Plate - A true outback legendand a damn good bloke

I remember a few years ago I was a green, twenty-something year old, trying to develop tourism in theoutback. I spent many nights in Oodnadatta intermittentlyover the years. Adam’s numerous tours of places such asthe town dam, the clay plan and Shepherds Waterholebrought the place to life. Its beauty and character Icouldn’t see without his insight, knowledge and memories. Most nights I'd end up at the Plates for supper, enjoyingtheir hospitality but most of all their company. The longnights would often end chatting with Adam over a Dewarsabout anything, everything, something and nothing.

Adam was extremely intelligent. He had a face of stoneand a dry sense of humour. He always made me laughand he always made me think. He taught me to see thingsfrom a variety of perspectives and never to judge a bookby its cover. He taught me about the importance of havinga vision and the persistent determination required to makeit a reality. He taught me not to follow the crowd and tothink outside of the square. He was not a lecturer, he wasa conversationist. Adam imparted his wisdom effortlessly.I have never met anyone quite like him and probably neverwill.

always took it in his stride. If he thought he was righthe'd stick to his guns. He ignored the tentacles ofofficialdom that reached out from the far south to the farnorth as best he could. Bureaucracy is insidious thoughand is as doggedly determined as he was. It was a losingbattle. I admired the tenacity in which he fought it and hisrefusal to rollover and accede.

He was never a good politician as he always spoke hismind. There was never any confusion about what Adamthought and where he stood on a matter. He was a straightshooter.

He was a pioneer in the true sense of the word. He was amaverick who refused to conform. He was a man whocarved a life and a living out of very little. He workedwith whatever he had to create things or keep things going. He was a bush mechanic, a historian, an innovator, anentrepreneur, a visionary, an explorer, a larrikin...and Iwas privileged to call him my mate.

Eileen Brown and the other Kungkas began to travelthe country, telling their story and spreading theirstrong message ‘irati wanti – the poison, leave it’.They wrote letters and spoke out. Slowly peoplestarted to listen and take notice. They worked withAboriginal and environmental groups, churches, unions and the South Australian Government andnever backed down, campaigning for six long years.“Kids were growing up and we were still fighting thatradioactive waste, that poison.”

They earned international recognition for theirtireless work, winning the prestigious American-based Goldman Prize for the Environment. The prizeis given annually to “grassroots environmentalheroes” from six geographic areas and isconsidered the environmental Nobel Prize.

The Kungkas never gave up and they won that fightagainst the government in 2004 when the FederalGovernment announced they would no longer buildthe waste dump in South Australia.

In 2005, the Kungkas published the story of theirstruggle in a book called ‘Talking Straight Out’, whichEileen co-edited. The book was launched on theanniversary of that first fateful test at Emu Junctionwith many family, friends and supporters inattendance.

Soon after, Eileen and the Kungkas travelled to AliceSprings to pass on their inspiring victory to CentralAustralian residents facing a similar proposal.

While Aged Care provided Eileen Brown with arelaxing, safe place to live she was more akin to anin-house consultant as she never stopped working, instead embracing her number one job as ‘teacher’by mentoring and supporting all Aged Care staffwhich they are forever grateful. All Aged Care staffhave been touched by Eileen Brown’s warmth, generosity and patient guidance.

On January 26, 2003 Eileen Brown was awarded aMember of the Order of Australia. Her award wasfor service to the community “through thepreservation, revival and teaching of traditionalAnangu culture and as an advocate for Indigenouscommunities in Central Australia.” She was awardedmany other accolades in recognition of herremarkable contributions to the community and thereis no doubt her legacy as a cultural leader andteacher will continue for many years to come.

Eileen Brown will be sadly missed by all her family, friends, Aged Care Care Board, staff and residents, and the broader community. A funeral service washeld on Wednesday 29th at Mimili.

There will be a memorial service at UmoonaAged Care on Saturday 1st September at 11am.

Eileen Brown was awarded a Member of the Order

of Australia.

Coober Pedy

Eileen often spoke of retiring but as most peoplewho knew her could attest, she did nothing of thesort. She worked tirelessly to share her Ananguculture by teaching the younger generations at anyopportunity. She attended Law and CultureMeetings and Tjilpi Pampa gatherings on the APYLands; worked with the Coober Pedy Area Schoolstudents through the Grandparents KnowledgeProgram; facilitated weaving and language teachingat the Tjitji Tjuta childcare, mentored youngAboriginal women from Adelaide that wanted to learnabout their culture; and participated in mentoringcamps with the Council ofAboriginal Elders and AgedCare Rights Advocacy Service.

Since 1999, Eileen was an active board member ofUmoona Aboriginal Aged Care and was part of avisionary team of Coober Pedy Elders that lead thedevelopment of the community care model into thesuccessful residential facility it is now. She was oneof the first residents to move into Aged Care in 2002,shifting from House 5 with Mrs Ivy Stewart who shewent on to share a room with for the next ten years.

While being a strong cultural woman she was alsoan active Christian and was a member of the RevivalChurch since the early nineties. Almost everySunday she would go to Pastor Deane’s church andeach Christmas attend a Christian camp atCarrackalinga. Later on she became involved inother churches, travelling to Oodnadatta andattending various singsongs.

From the twitch of my nose to the wriggle of my toes, musicwill start my body moving. I just can’t resist a good beat. Ican dog dance to Slim Dusty and wiggle my hips to Elvis.

I have such a wide interest in all music that I have nevergiven it any thought about which is my favourite.

My Dad is stuck in the 80’s as far as music goes; he listens toit on CD while he is working around the house. He likes othermusic, but it is the music of the 80’s he has grown up with andthe bands of the 80’s he knows the best.

He also enjoys talk back programs on ABC radio and to hiscredit he is always up with the latest wheat prices.

My Mum has very different taste in music. There have beentimes that Dad and I have been trapped in the car on a longtrip and its Mum’s turn to choose a CD, I can hide in the backand try and block my ears but Dad has no escape. He has tosuffer through it sitting in the front, right next to a speaker.

Once Dad remembers Mum’s taste in music came in very handy.

He was working out bush with a group of people and one ofthe ladies was playing some music. My Dad said “I knowthat song, it’s from the 1930’s, that’s Billy Holiday, and she’sa very good singer” Well, the lady was very impressed theDad knew the singer and Dad was impressed that the ladywas the cook of the camp and from that day on he got specialservice and his lunch was always better than every one else’s.

To say Mum has different taste in music is an understatement. It can be almost strange.

Don’t forget it is Father’s Day coming up on September2nd. It’s so easy getting Dad something. Any ‘80’s mixedCD will do. They all sound much the same to me. I needto save some money to get this present and that meanscutting back on my spending. Looks like no chickennuggets, ice creams and fluffy toys and save up for aCD.

Thinking about Wendy and her Bush ballads and poetry Icould write Dad a poem to go with his CD. If I write agood poem maybe Wendy can make it into a song.

Daddy’s Little Girl

I’m Daddy’s little girlI love him with all my heartIt’s been that way from the startLaugh, giggle and being silly togetherSeeking each other in all types of weatherIt’s more than puppy love, daddy believes in meOur commitment to each other is easy to seeI help him when ever I canA day of work is well plannedWe work in the shed, laying in dirt and dust without acareWorking under the car, getting grease in my hairLeisure time is serious tooIt’s family time, with great things to doThere a photo in his wallet where his money used to beThe picture is special; it’s of Mum and me.I love you Daddy, Happy Fathers Day

Charlie ParisLets all dance to Dad’s new 80’s CDWoof Woof

Radiators, Hoodoo Gurus, Daddy Cool, The Cockroaches thatbecame the Wiggles and Midnight Oil. The list was an endlesssmorgasbord of good taste.

Mum likes her music loud, and if she can LOUDER the better. She is famous with her friends because she fell asleep in alarge speaker at a Rolling Stones Concert.

Mum also likes a good waltz and the blues. She has beenknown to sing in elevators if the elevator music is somethingshe knows.

Then there is her Country Music, that’s where I get my loveof Slim Dusty from. Early Aussie bush music developed intothe modern country music we know today. From Slim Dustyand a “Pub with no beer”, Rolf Harris with his song “Tie meKangaroo down, Sport” and “True Blue” and “Old Man Emu”by John Williamson. Music that makes you want to sing andtap your toes. Mum and I do a very physical with lots ofactions “Home among the Gum Trees”

I like to dance along to any type of music. I love it all. Thereare 1000’s of different types of music, if you are talking Punk;you need to say which type of Punk. Punk Blues, PunkCabaret, Punk Jazz or Punk Rock. There are music types Ihave never heard of. I read about music types called the“New Weird America” music (I didn’t know there was “OldWeird America” music) and not to forget Freak beatmusic?????

All these different types of music and no one have ever writtenDog Dance music. Instead of Disco or Hip Hop we couldhave Dog Dance A Go Go venues.

She can sing alone with any old musical. Mum’s relativestook her to see the musical “Oklahoma.” She loved it so muchshe sang along with all the actors; she was just a little louderthan the people on the stage. (The relatives never took her toa musical again.)

She and I share the love of all Australian music. I enjoy it,however Mum will proudly tell people she was there when itall started. Before these bands were famous they were allpub bands, you paid a few dollars to get into your local club/pub and dance all night to the best music. Music and bandsthat would be world famous in the future. From AC/DC, ColdChisel, The Angels, INXS, The

A few weeks ago I met a lady from Charters Towers,Wendy Oss, an incredibly talented person who cansing and recite original bush poetry.

Wendy who is also known as “The Soap Box Poet” wasappearing at the Desert Cave, where she entertained localand overseas guests alike. The tourists from overseaswere delighted in the variety of Aussie songs Wendysang and the way she involved the audience..

I caught up with Wendy the day before she left CooberPedy. She said she had a wonderful time, with lots tosee and do. She will need to come back again.

With all this talk of music and dancing, I am going toput on my mint condition Ernie Sigley record, yes Imean RECORD!! And dance around the room with Mum.(Anyone under the age of 35 may need to ask theirgrandparents who Ernie is)

Acting Commissioner for Consumer Affairs, AnneGale, is warning people not to buy goods fromtravelling conmen selling from the back of vans orcars.

The warning follows a recent report received by Consumerand Business Services (CBS) of a white van with NSWregistration plates selling audio visual equipment in theSouth Plympton area. CBS issued a similar warning inOctober 2011, for the Victor Harbor region.

“Typically, these traders will tell consumers that they havesurplus stock of high quality equipment that they can sellat greatly reduced prices by cash only,” Ms Gale said.

“Any product guarantee that might be provided with thegoods is worthless. Don’t be fooled by their to-good-to-be-true, cash-only prices for ‘high-end’ multimedia andelectronic goods.

“These goods are likely to be poor imitations and maynot work properly. Consumers should not deal with thesedodgy traders.”

The person in the van in South Plympton sold some audiovisual equipment that the conman claimed was excessstock from a well-known retailer, worth $12,000 butavailable through him for $3,000.

The person who purchased the audio visual equipmentreceived a receipt with the company name HarmanGroup Electronic Pty Ltd handwritten on it.

Under Australian Consumer Law, for unsolicited salesconsumers have a 10-day cooling off period during whichthe trader cannot provide any goods or services or acceptany payment in relation to that sale.

“Any traders selling products from vans are breaking

the law, and consumers are entitled to have their money

refunded and the contract nullified.” Ms Gale said.

“However, these are travelling conmen who will

disappear as soon as money changes hands, making it

extremely difficult to receive your entitled compensation

for the dodgy products.

“Breaches of these laws are subject to penalties of up

to $10,000 for individuals and $50,000 for companies.”

If consumers are approached by someone selling goods

from a van or car, or come across anyone claiming to

be from the Harman Group Electronic company, they

are urged to contact CBS on 131 882.
