Christmas

We go to the church, decorate homes and we buy presents for the family and friends. We usually eat cabbage soup, a carp with potato salat, waffles, honey, garlic and an apple. After dinner the family talk, sing, eat cakes and unwrap presents.

Easter

People decorate homes with everything reminding spring. On Easter Monday boys whip and souse girls. Then girls give them painted eggs, chocolate or money.

Bass burial

The Slovak Christians start 40-day lent. They stop all balls and they „bury“ a bass instrument.

Harvest-home

It is a ceremony for the completion of the harvest. Then there is a banquet with music and dancing. People make merry with family and friends.

Vintage festival

It's in the late of September. When the grape vintage is finished we have a vintage festival. In our country we have many roundabouts, refreshment stands and many people are in the town.

SLOVAK FOLK COSTUMES

Each of Slovak regions has its own folk costume. Each costume has embroideries, which are symbolic for the region.

FOLK MUSIC

Our typical musical instruments are a violin, a whistle, an acordeon and „fujara“. Fujara is a musical instrument similar to the flute.

SLOVAK MEALS

Potato pancakes: It is made from potatoes, flour and eggs. It can also be stuffed with meat.

Mushroom soup: may also be creamy or not.

Sheep cheese gnocchi :It is very filling meal. It is made from potatoes, flour and sheep cheese.
