The 2017 UMW Reading Program Books are Here For almost 150 years, members of United Methodist Women and its predecessor organizations have been involved in mission that includes prayer, study and action. The reading program is a study opportunity, encouraging the members to read a diverse range of books with the intention of broadening their exposure to a variety of concepts. It does not intend that readers accept each word or idea contained in each book, only that they become more informed members of society. You do not need to be a member of the United Methodist Women to read any of these books, all of which are located on the wooden book cart in the library. UMW Reading Program Books for 2017. The Asbury Home Connection Helping to Fund the Missions of Asbury United Methodist Church

What is the Asbury Home Connection? – The Asbury Home Connection is a real estate referral service that helps buyers or sellers of real estate find a real estate broker to assist them in the purchase or sale of property (not just homes).

What is in it for Asbury? – As a result of Asbury helping to arrange the real estate broker arrangement for a buyer and/or seller, Asbury will receive 25% of the real estate commission generated in the sale. The money goes to Asbury, without deduction for administrative fees or expenses, in order to support Asbury missions. In the two and half years since Dennis and Sharon Fish (long time members of Asbury) set up the service, Asbury has received of $22,500 to support church missions.

How much are we talking about? – The purchase or sale of a $200,000 home would typically generate $1,500 to Asbury for use in its mission activities.

How does it work? – If you are buying or selling property in this state of any other state, call or text Dennis Fish at 505-250-9009 or e-mail him at [email protected] and tell him that you want to use the Asbury Connection for the sale or purchase. Dennis will make the contact with the realtor you want to use or if you don’t have a realtor, he can help you or he can help you find a realtor. Once the relationship is established, the sale transaction is the same as any other real estate sale or purchase.

What if I want to use my own realtor? – You can use any realtor that you want. All that needs to happen is that you need to contact Dennis Fish as the representative of the Asbury Home Connection before you sign a listing agreement with another realtor. When you talk to Dennis, just tell him who you want to use as your realtor. After that, your communications in the sale process are all with the realtor of your choice.

Is it only available in Albuquerque? – No. If your children, parents or friends are looking for a realtor or have a realtor that they want to use in another City or state, just have them contract Dennis before signing a listing agreement with that realtor.

Does using the Asbury Home Connection make the transaction cost more? – No. The real estate commission will be the same whether you use the Home Connection or not.

So what is the catch - it sounds too good to be true? – There is no catch. Real estate referral services are common throughout the United States. Large companies use them all the time when they move their employees from city to city or from one state to another. Realtors are glad to have the business referred to them. Dennis Fish is a long time member of Asbury Church and he agreed to set up the Asbury Home Connection and pass through all the commissions that he would otherwise receive for the referral services. Dennis collects nothing for his role and has generously agreed to allow his license to be used in order to help Asbury and its missions.

Consider an IRA Charitable Rollover (If you are 70 ½ or more and must take a Required Minimum Distribution)

The budget legislation passed and signed into law in December 2015 permanently reinstated the IRA Charitable Rollover that was in effect sporadically since 2006. This provision allows taxpayers who are 70½ or older to transfer any amount up to as much as $100,000 directly from an IRA (Traditional or Roth) to a qualified charity (like Asbury) each year without having any of the transferred amount counted as part of their adjusted gross income. The transfer also can count toward the taxpayer’s annual Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). If you do this, the transferred amount will not be taxed, whereas if you simply take your RMD for yourself, it will be taxed along with all your other income. By lowering your adjusted gross income, you may even pay less tax on your Social Security income. You don’t have to itemize deductions to get the tax savings; in fact, you cannot deduct the donated amount because it does not count as income. All it takes is a request to your IRA custodian to make a transfer directly to Asbury. Why not donate your annual RMD (or more if you can afford it) to Asbury under this provision and avoid paying income tax on it?
