The following document has been compiled by Ceta-Base in an attempt to make
available factual data concerning live-capture practices in drive hunt fisheries.
This document is not an official capture statistic nor is it meant to replace ANY official
documents/sources. However it is intended to provide baseline data on KNOWN
individuals on public display that were acquired through drive hunt fisheries. Allinformation within this document has been obtained through public sources, specifically
the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), online news articles, blogs, message boards and
eye-witness reports from land-based volunteers on site during drive hunts operations.

Annual hunts resulted in an average of 1445 animals captured per year with minimum
total catch of 868 occurring in 2003 and at maximum total catch of 2,008 in the year
2002. Average total kill totaled 1,368 animal with maximum total kill of 2,009 in the
year 2000 and minimum total kill of 842 in 2003. Live capture resulted in an average of
77.5 animals per year with minimum live-capture of 28 in 2001 and maximum total live
capture of 125 in 2006.
Examinations of the average numbers reveal 95% of animals captured through drive
hunt fisheries were slaughtered while the remaining 5% were taken as live-capture.
The chart below shows hunt results by calendar year with total catch (blue), total kill
(red)and total live capture (green) represented. (Note: total catch = total kill + total
live capture)

2.1. 2011/2012 Season (01 Sep 2011 to 27 Feb 2012*)
The following numbers for the 2011/2012 season are not official statistics but rather
reflect reports given by witnesses on-site in Taiji, Japan during the season. (Sea
Shepherd Conservation Society)
The 2011/2012 season started on September 1st, 2011 and has appeared to have ended
early, at the time of this publication the last hunt was on February 27th, 2012. * It is
possible that other species could be harvested up to April 30 th, 2012 and this document
will be updated should that occur.
During this season an estimated 823 animals have been driven into the cove at Taiji,Japan. . Of this total 719 (87%) were killed, 48 (6%) were released, 51 (6%) were live-
capture. The status of the remaining five individuals (1%), false killer whales , is
unknown.
A total of eight species were captured, sold & killed including: Bottlenose Dolphins (T.
gilli),False Killer Whales (P. crasssidens),Pacific White-sided Dolphins(L. obliquidens),

reflect reports given by witness on-site in Taiji, Japan during the 2010/2011 season.
(Sea Shepherd Conservation Society).
The 2010/2011 season started on September 1 st, 2010 and appeared to end on February
26th, 2011 however in May an extension of the season was granted and a pod of pilot
whales was driven into the cove on May 4thand May 5thof 2011.
During this season an estimated 1,297 animals have driven into the cove at Taiji, Japan.
Of this total 849 (65%) have been killed, 181 (14%) have been released and 98 (8%) were
live-capture. The status of the remaining 169 (13%) individuals is unknown.
Species captured, sold & killed include: Bottlenose Dolphins (54%), Risso's Dolphins

For animals that were live-capture Trade Statistics of Japanhave a total of 62 cetacean
exports from Japan between January 2011 and June 2011 to a total of four countries:
China, who received 44 animals, the Republic of Georgia who received seven animals,
Tunisia who received five animals and South Korea who received six animals.
Through online news articles Ceta-Base can account for 35 animals exported from Japan
during 2011 & six animals between 09 Sep 2010 and 07 Dec 2010. They are listed below
with the date of export followed by country, receiving park and finally, species with
number of individuals in parenthesis (most recent first).
