History
The name Canada comes from a St. Lawrence Iroquoianword, kanata, meaning "village or "settlement".
In 1535, indigenous inhabitants of the present-day
Quebec City region used the word to direct Frenchexplorer Jacques Cartier towards the village of
Stadacona;
In the 17th and early 18th century, Canada referred tothe part of New France that lay along the Saint
Lawrence River and the northern shores of the Great
Lakes;

was first drafted by the "Fathers of Confederation" atthe Quebec conference of 1864. This then became
law when the constitution act was passed in 1867.
This act gave the formal executive authority to Queen
Victoria (Queen of Great Britain);

Now, Canada is an independent Federal state with the
Queen still the head of state.
