Live from Lincoln Center: Joshua Bell and the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra The Mostly Mozart Festival marks the 200th anniversaries of Haydn’s death and Mendelssohn’s birth. Maestro Louis Langrée leads the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra and master violinist Joshua Bell in two works by Mendelssohn: the illustrious Violin Concerto and his stand-alone concert work, “The Hebrides”; Haydn’s Symphony No. 104 in D Major (“London”); and Mozart’s Rondo for Violin and Orchestra in C Major and Adagio for Violin and Orchestra in E Major. 222 Wednesday, August 12, 7pm
Great Performances: Harlem in Montmartre Tells the story of the jazz age in Paris – a fascinating yet often neglected era in African-American cultural history. After peace was signed at Versailles, many black Americans remained in Europe rather than return to the brutal segregation and racism of America; over the next two decades, they created an expatriate community of musicians, entertainers and entrepreneurs. Using rare archival material this remarkable documentary features footage of such key figures as James Reese Europe and Josephine Baker. 2 Wednesday, August 26, 9pm
Time Team Special Edition Part extreme adventure, part hard science, and part reality show, Time Team America takes viewers deep into the trenches of America’s most intriguing archaeological sites. Far from the comfort of a lab, they face searing heat, driving rain, swamps, frayed nerves and the inevitable technical setbacks. Through it all, the audience peers over the shoulders of diggers at work and shares the rush of discovery as artifacts emerge from the ground. 2 Wednesday, August 26, 7pm LIFE Thursday, August 27, 3pm
Get Down Tonight – The Disco Explosion My Music brings back the disco years with live performances from legends of the lighted dance floor. Hosted by KC and The Sunshine Band, this program includes the hit makers featured on the soundtrack of Saturday Night Fever. KC & The Sunshine Band (That's The Way I Like It, Get Down Tonight), The Trammps (Disco Inferno), Yvonne Elliman (If I Can't Have You) and more bring back the days of polyester suits, big hair, mirror balls and 8 track tapes. 22 Sunday, August 9, 9pm LIFE Saturday, August 8, 8:40pm
Frost/Nixon: The Original Watergate Interviews A historic meeting so gripping and poignant it has been adapted into an award-winning stage play and a major motion picture. This program, culled from over 28 hours of interview footage between Sir David Frost and U.S. President Richard M. Nixon, was originally broadcast in May of 1977. Never before, nor since, has a U.S. President been so candid on camera. 2 Tuesday, August 18, 9pm LIFE Sunday, August 9, 6pm

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGEMy career in public broadcasting started with Mr. Rogers. Let me explain: Like so many of us in the late 60’s and early 70’s, I went to college with a sense of
idealism. I felt I could make a difference in my community by pursing a career in medicine.
One day, after classes and before heading off to my job, I turned on the TV and found myself watching Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. I became curious about what he was doing and about the notion of TV as an educational, inspiring and community-building medium. I was so curious that I wrote to him and received a response which changed the course of my life. To put it simply, Fred Rogers inspired me to make television that mattered. Television that informs, educates and inspires. At the age of 27, I found myself building a PBS station in Reno, Nevada. After 17 wonderful years in Reno, I came to Minnesota to join arms with a great staff and a wonderful community who are committed to use the power of media for the public good. It has been a great journey!
That's my story – and that's my reason for being passionate
about public television and about a.
What’s your reason? Every day there are so many ways in which a touches people. From educating kids to inspiring a new household project. From reporting amazing scientific discoveries to presenting the best in the arts. There are thousands of reasons to be passionate about – and to support – a.
Every day, a is there for you, and now we ask you to be there for us. As we
near the end of the fiscal year, I'm asking you, very directly, to help us out. In
these economic times, your support is more important than ever. Stand behind
the programs that enrich your life by making an additional gift now. There are many reasons why a is a success, but the most important reason is our members. Donations from individuals make up nearly 50 percent of a's budget; a is valuable to you, and your support is invaluable to a. You are the reason we are here. We thank you for your continued support.
WHAT'S YOUR REASON?

"I feel you can help others through art even if it is just by making a small drawing and sharing it."
With those words, 11-year old Conner Gordon of Savage sums up his ideas about being an artist and about being the grand prize winner of the recent "Arthur/All Kids Can Character Search.”
Selected out of an overwhelming 8,500 entries, Connor, along with his character Lydia Fox were featured in a live-action segment of the Arthur show. “My character, Lydia, wants kids to know that even though she’s in a wheelchair, she can do what everyone else can do, but in her own way,” Connor says.
Launched in February 2009, the competition invited children ages 6-12 to create a new friend for Arthur. The activity was designed to educate children about the importance of inclusion and how children of all abilities can play together.
“We saw thousands of character ideas from around the country,” says Jacqui Deegan, Arthur Executive Producer. “We were truly inspired by all of them, and especially by Connor’s character, Lydia Fox, whose creativity, intelligence and positive attitude are a perfect match for our series."
As part of his prize, Connor got to spend time with Arthur's creator, Marc Brown. Conner says, "I was able to ask him questions and he gave me instructions to help me become a better artist. It was one of the best days of my life."
Aside from art, Conner plays the violin and likes to skateboard, snowboard and plays baseball and basketball. He plans on painting a mural in his room and hopes to one day study art in college and have his own cartoon in the newspaper.
For now, he hopes Lydia Fox sends the message that, "Anyone with a disability needs to be treated just like everyone else. Kids with disabilities want people to like them for who they are and not just like them – or not like them – because they have a disability."

Getting There
26 a •vz August 2009
CHAnGES TO THE nEWSHOUr
From in-depth analysis of current events to live interviews and discussions, the award-winning NewsHour with Jim Lehrer is a mainstay of PBS's public affairs
programming. To mark its 30th anniversary, the show will see a variety of changes in September.
Key among them is the switch to a dual anchor format, with Jim Lehrer regularly joined by NewsHour
senior correspondents Gwen Ifill, Judy Woodruff and Jeffrey Brown in the studio. Senior correspondents
Ray Suarez and Margaret Warner will primarily focus on “out of studio” reporting. By sending senior
correspondents out of the studio, the program looks to optimize their reporting talents and add variety to
the broadcast. The change in anchor format will be reflected in the show's new name, PBS NewsHour.
The show will also merge on-air and online operations into one entity. There will be a new online
correspondent, who will provide a link between online news and the nightly broadcast. The online
correspondent will post four-to-five-minute video news summaries throughout the day and also
anchor the news summary on the nightly broadcast. PBS NewsHour will also redesign its Web site to
accommodate the news summaries, along with the increasing number of unique sub-sites, for example,
economic correspondent Paul Solman’s Business Desk and Jeff Brown’s Art Beat.
Lastly, the show plans to form new collaborations with other public media outlets – both national and
local – including Frontline, NPR and local public media producers. This collaboration will deliver strong
content to a wider audience, bringing additional perspective and depth to PBS NewsHour's reporting and
analysis of national and international events.
