A Message from our new Recreation Supervisor:

My name is Casey Stewart and I am honored to be part of the Town of Sullivan Parks and Recreation Department as the Recreation Supervisor. I was born and raised in North Syracuse where I have worked for the North Syracuse Parks and Recreation Department since 2010 as the Program Assistant. I graduated from Onondaga Community College with a degree in Recreation Leadership in December of 2012. I started working at WonderWorks when they opened in 2012. I worked my way up into the sales office and just left when I received the position here at the Town of Sullivan.

I am very excited about working with the residents of the Town of Sullivan. This town takes great pride in their sports, youth activities, and their community as a whole. You may have already seen me around as I make an effort to get out to see all of our wonderful programs.

If you have suggestions or ideas to improve existing programs or ideas for new programs please let me know. If you are interested in working in the summer for our Playground Program please contact me regardless if you have worked in the past or are interested in working in the future.

I look forward to developing a positive relationship with the people of the Town of Sullivan!

Office of the AssessorEnhanced STAR exemption

If you are turning 65 in 2016, check to see if you are eligible for the Enhanced Star exemption on school tax.

To qualify, it must be your primary residence, and your 2014 income must be $84,550 or less.

Applications must be filed in the Assessor’s Office by March 1, 2016.

This fall certainly has been one of the best I can ever remember. It has been great weather to get caught up on any outside work that was an “I’ll get to it” project.

As I write this, the week before Thanksgiving, at the Town, we have completed our budget with a one-cent increase in the tax rate. Around $4 million of assessed value came off the tax rolls this year, with the Oneidas making their trust application, and the rate still only went up one penny.

The Town of Sullivan has managed your money very well. It is from the dedication of good employees that we are able to do this. We recently held employee recognitions and found an astonishing 204 years of collective service in our Highway Department, 230 years in the town offices, 73 years in Parks and Recreation and 75 years on the town board for a total of 482 years of expertise and excellence from all of our

employees.That doesn’t include Planning,

Zoning, Assessment or part-time summer Parks and Rec staff.

There is no doubt in my mind that pride and doing a

quality job while saving tax dollars is foremost on all of our dedicated employees’ minds.

Our greatest assets are the taxpayers and the people who entrust to us the responsibility of conducting the business of the

town. The holiday season is upon us,

and we will again be lighting a tree in Bridgeport, thanks to the Bridgeport-Lakeport Civic Organization. Hats off to the volunteers who make that organization work.

There will also be a tree lighting put on by the village of Chittenango in December.

As we close 2015 and open a new year, our best days are ahead of us.

God bless and have a joyous holiday season.

“We recently held employee recognitions and found an astonishing ... total of 482 years of expertise...”

Fire Prevention & Safety a Year-Round Job

Bill PindleBe sure that you have smoke

and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. A smoke detector in each bedroom would be good and not located in the kitchen, and at least one carbon monoxide detector installed on each level of your home.

Please take note that most of the smoke detectors installed in homes today do not work, having missing batteries, or there are none installed at all.

When using small, portable electric heaters, do not use a lead cord. Plug the heater directly into the outlet and run the heater on the lowest setting. Doing this will not overload the electrical circuit. Electric space heaters are a major cause of many house fires.

Have an escape plan from your home in the event of a fire. Preplan a place to meet outside of your home. Doing this will eliminate any

confusion in the event of a fire. Meet near the swing set, mailbox or other pre-planned meeting location.

If you are using a wood burning stove, be sure to keep all safety clearances near and around your stove. Clean the piping often to prevent having a chimney fire. Burning well-seasoned wood is also a good practice.

House numbers are very important. Have the numbers clearly posted on the front of your house. Posting four-inch numbers is suggested. This is important for fire calls but is most important for any medical calls at your home. Watching the rescue people pass your home will waste many critical moments.

Submitted with Bridgeport Fire Chief Gerry Honors, Chittenango Fire Chief Mike Sudol and North Chittenango Fire Chief Pat Lum.

As I write this article, I am roughly at the halfway point of my first term as Councilman. I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for the opportunity to be a part of our local governing body. The position can be very challenging at times, but it has its rewards.

The town and fire tax rates continue to remain low in respect to the services provided. I would stack up our town employees, highway department and fire departments up against anybody’s and come out the winner.

As we enter into a new year, greater challenges will face us from the potential loss of property

tax revenues in specific locations to minimum wage increases in certain employment areas. These may have a direct effect on services provided.

The town board continually works toward solutions to any obstacles our town may face. As stated in our comprehensive plan, we are in the process of trying to enhance the gateways into the town and promote a controlled growth while maintaining its hometown atmosphere.
