Welcome to the 2016 Town Hall Gallery program. Throughout the next 12 months we will share with you an amazing array of exhibitions and public programs that are unique, thought-provoking and inspiring.

Town Hall Gallery is excited to present the 2016 program. We have a vast range of exhibitions, talks and workshops that will have you enjoying art both inside and outside of the gallery space. The team here are inspired by what is around us and we aim to share some of these experiences with you throughout the year.

Our first suite of exhibitions features some very significant Australian artists. We are pleased to host Reducing Landscapes, an exhibition curated by Latrobe Regional Gallery, which features works by John Nixon alongside Fred Williams works from The Cbus Collection of Australian Art. This is a fantastic opportunity to view art by these key Australian artists. Town Hall Gallery is also taking the opportunity to exhibit our collection of Fred Williams works as well as our newest acquisition by Robert Jacks.

January sees the start of our newest public program, Walk and Talk, where visitors can join the team on the first day of each new main gallery exhibition for a free guided tour. This series will continue throughout the year and we hope you all enjoy the opportunity to see the exhibitions first. We also take you out of the gallery in February when Town Hall Gallery teams up with City of Boroondara Parks and Gardens for a tour of Maranoa Gardens and an opportunity to sketch en plein air.

From mid-March we have The Traveller: Experiencing Movement, Time & Place, an exhibition of works from the Lyon Collection. We are thrilled to work with the Lyon Collection and for our dedicated visitors to have the opportunity to see amazing contemporary works by such artists as Patricia Piccinini, Callum Morton and Matthew Sleeth.

We will be hosting quite a number of programs in conjunction with this exhibition, which will investigate ideas around collecting, contemporary Australian art and movement. You don’t want to miss this!

From mid-year, we will take you to Imagined Worlds, a Town Hall Gallery curated exhibition which explores new and imagined landscapes. Expect to be taken to some new places with beautiful works by Tony Lloyd, Alice Wormald and Andrew Mezei to name a few. We will also take this inspiration into an evening of spoken work poetry, where you will be transported to another world.

Towards the end of 2016 Town Hall Gallery will celebrate the art, theatre and fashion of Louis Kahan. This exhibition will feature not only works by Kahan but also historical photographs and sketches of costumes he designed. In keeping with the design flavour, we end with Pattern + where the gallery will be overloaded with design and pattern from both nature and the man-made world.

We also have twelve exciting exhibitions at the Community Project Wall that showcase the talents of our local arts community.

There is so much to see and do in 2016 and we look forward to seeing you at the gallery throughout the year. Don’t forget that you can connect with us via social media where we will keep you up-to-date with images, artist interviews and events.

Reducing LandscapesFred Williams and John Nixon

The paintings of Fred Williams and constructions of John Nixon highlight the process and expression of abstraction. For both artists, nature, or more specifically landscape, has been the starting point for an enquiry into the distillation and articulation of sensory experience.

For both Fred Williams and John Nixon the landscape painting represents a vehicle for utilising form and structure. Williams experiments with the medium of paint using wash and impasto oil paint and brush, whilst Nixon experiments differently, using enamel paint and sponge brushes, and a method of construction to build the paintings beyond the picture plane using collaged timbers.

DialectWorks from the Town Hall Gallery Collection

Every artist has their own style and visual language. When paint is moved from brush to canvas, the mark made is like a type of handwriting, particular to each artist. Dialect investigates a variety of artists’ styles and languages.

Viewers are encouraged to look at how some artists have changed their style over the years, while others have a very clear signature that has become like a trademark.

The TravellerExperiencing Movement, Time & Place

Works from the Lyon Collection

Navigating our way through the world is the height of adventure, where the journey is often as important as the destination. Experience ideas about movement and passage in artworks by some of Australia’s most celebrated artists. Carefully selected from the Lyon Collection, this exhibition takes you on a journey through time, space and place – through the vast Australian outback, our urban and suburban landscape, and the virtual world.

Features works by Patricia Piccinini, Matthew Sleeth, Callum Morton, Shaun Gladwell, Peter Atkins and Louise Forthun.

The Lyon Collection is one of Australia’s largest and most significant collections of Australian contemporary art. The Collection includes more than forty five artists represented in depth, and offers insights into significant moments and shifts in Australian contemporary art practice and thinking from the early 1990s through to the first two decades of the new century.

Established in 1990, the Collection has been developed by Corbett Lyon and Yueji Lyon over a 25 year period as a large, privately held collection.

In 2012, the Lyons established a new public museum entity, the Lyon Foundation, to secure a permanent future home for the Collection.

Many works from the Lyon Collection have now been gifted to the public Foundation which has a charter to promote Australian contemporary art and to preserve and exhibit the Lyon Collection.

The Foundation is currently finalising plans for its new public museum building to be constructed in Cotham Road, Kew. The museum will open to the public six days each week, commencing in early 2018.

In anticipation of the development of the new public museum building, the Town Hall Gallery is pleased to present these key works from this public Collection.

Imagined Worlds

Blurring the boundary between real and imagined these artworks challenge traditional representations of landscape and allow the viewer to imagine life in a new world.

Imagined Worlds also questions why artists are proposing new landscapes. Is it escapism, fantasy or dreaming of a new utopia? The exhibition will show beautiful, dreamy imagery which will be both calming and intriguing.

Louis KahanArt, Theatre, Fashion

Tailoring, fashion and costume design were crucial aspects of Louis Kahan’s journey as an artist. In Australia, Kahan contributed to a vibrant post-war arts scene where his training in art and tailoring in early twentieth-century Vienna and Paris influenced his later work.

This exhibition showcases an exciting artist who moved seamlessly across theatre, dress and illustration. It also provides the back story to one of Australia’s migrant artists; a little-known story that includes work with the great fashion houses and celebrities of early twentieth century Europe.

Co-curated with Laura Jocic in collaboration with the Kahan Collection, Melbourne.

Pattern +

Pattern + highlights both artworks and design-based works that celebrate pattern. Whether it be finding symmetry and repetition in nature or investigating computer generated algorithms, this exhibition will have viewers seeing patterns within their own environment.

Pattern + references the history of various iconic patterns as well as artists who are creating their own language within pattern.

Featuring a wide range of artists and designers, Pattern + will showcase textiles, painting, photography and installation.

Town Hall Gallery will be hosting an artist’s swap meet. Bring an artwork to swap, collect a token and browse dozens of amazing artworks in the hopes of taking home something new from another artist. Entry is free by application only.

Community Project Wall

Town Hall Gallery is committed to supporting local artists and community groups from the City of Boroondara. The provision of a fourth exhibition space – the Community Project Wall – enables us to exhibit the talents of the many artists living in our community.

Spanning close to 30 metres, this space offers an opportunity to present a large volume of work to a large audience. The curatorial staff is on hand to mentor and assist with professional development for the exhibiting artists, offering the same level of quality presentation and promotion afforded the major exhibitions and renowned artists we show in the larger gallery spaces.

Exhibitions are selected through an annual application process, and the space allows individual artists, school and community groups to exhibit within a professional environment. Displays are themed to coincide with major exhibitions taking place at Town Hall Gallery, with smaller works and publications by exhibiting artists also available for purchase.
