Page 1: TOWN & COUNTRY MEMORIAL POST 152, THE AMERICAN … · 2019. 7. 13. · meals. I am making a recommendation to the membership that we raise our price for meals from $6.00 to $7.00

We will probably be seeing an I ncrease in activity in the coming month. The Snow Birds are return-ing and we are entering the Holi-day Season. Hope to see more members volunteering

their time to assist during this busy time of year. This news may not be taken lightly by some members, however it is necessary. Our

post is run like a business and like other businesses this recession is taking its toll. Our costs for food and condiments have risen to a point that we are losing money on our meals. We are not looking to make a profit on our meals; however we need to break even on these meals. I am making a recommendation to the membership that we raise our price for meals from $6.00 to $7.00 effective December 1st, 2009. I understand that we have members that are on fixed incomes and any raise in cost is going to be difficult, however this increase is necessary to continue to offer the meals. I will listen to your concerns and recommendations at the meeting. At this time we are not looking to increase the cost of our drinks at the bar.

I apologize for the confusion on the October calendar for certain differences in the posted menu or event dates between the calendar in the news letter and the large calendar in the Bar. The calendar is set at the entertainment committee meeting. Sometimes there will have to be changes made to the calendar due to unforeseen circumstances. I will at-tempt to make any changes to the calendar on the large master calendar in the Bar. You can confirm an event with the on duty bartender.

We are still having problems getting members to get involved with Wednesday meals and volunteering to work in the kitchen. If wanting to get involved let myself or John Carter know, we will get you on the calendar or get you with someone in the kitchen.

Just a reminder, there will be no Bingo or meal served on Wednesday, Nov 24, due to Thanksgiving being served on Nov 25th. Hope to see you there for dinner. I have noticed an increase in patrons at the Post on Friday and Saturday nights, it’s nice to see. I hope everyone is enjoying themselves.

I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and hope to see you at the Post.

Greetings from the ALA Auxiliary! Summer is quickly approaching with that come many outdoor activities. As we plan our family picnics or group golf outings please remember safety first and sun-screen, lots of sunscreen. As we prepare to wind down our year I would like to sincerely thank the 2017-2018 officers and many members of our wonderful organization for all of the hard work and commitment this past year. Also, as of this writing the Auxiliary has not yet held elections so I am not able to list the new officers but would like to encourage each of you to consider becoming involved in the workings of our unit. You may not think that you have anything to offer but little things can turn into big things and mean the world to some-one. Positions within the Auxiliary are very reward-ing when one considers the good that can be done through the programs of the ALA; with your support we can continue to fulfill the needs of our Veterans and community. The many things that Auxiliary ac-complishes cannot be done without you. A reminder of the upcoming activities as we pre-pare to close our 2017-2018 year: District Constitutional Conference which will be held on Saturday June 2, 2018 hosted at Hugh Gilbert Strickland American Legion Post #138. Located at 5535 W. Prescott Port Tampa 33616 . Please note sign in time is 9:00 AM and the meeting at 10:00 AM. Department of Florida Convention held at the Or-lando World Center Marriot Resort, Jul 5 at 8 AM to Jul 8 at 12 PM I would also again like to remind Auxiliary mem-bers, that our general meetings are held the third Monday of each month. Please note the time change; meetings now start at 7:15. We would love to see some new faces and the return of some familiar faces at these meetings; it is the best way to find out your Auxiliary is doing. Yours in Service,Sheryl Kinsler, President

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

We have a very busy month in No-vember and we are looking at each and every member to get involved and help with all of our activities. Veteran’s Day Parade will be coming up soon to be held on Hanley Road as usual. Post / Unit 152 creates a beautiful float and needs everyone’s help to get it built, towed and put into place. Also they need all you wonderful Veteran’s and Auxiliary Mem-bers and Officers to participate in the parade itself. Food and Fun back at the Post as al-ways. Please come celebrate all of our Veter-ans Service.

Our Unit meetings are very thin to say the least. There are the very devoted who show up every month and to them I commend them for taking a bit of their busy lives and meet with us to see what we are doing, and what we need to do. To those of you who do not come and attend, we know that not all of the time spent is entertaining. These meetings also have to take care of business. Please think about it, as one hour of your month is not a lot to ask to provide support to your past and pre-sent relatives that gave you the right to be a Member. Please get involved and be part of what is making this organization keep running. We cannot do it all without all of you.

Thanksgiving will be coming soon and the usual sign up sheet will be placed on the door of the entry way to the Lounge. Please sign up for what you can donate, and remember your time is just as important as your money. We intend to serve from 1 to 4:00 pm.

As you know all donations go to the Christmas Basket Drive in December for the Needy families in our local community. Happy Holidays to all as they quickly come upon us.

I would like to thank Anna Richter for getting our Constitution and Bylaws up to date and sent in for approval. This is to make the change to the amount of our yearly dues which will be $25.00 for Seniors and $5.00 for Jun-iors, beginning for year 2010-2011. The De-partment of Florida raised their annual portion which required us to do the same. Just advis-ing all of you so when you see your next year’s renewal card you will be prepared. Kimberly Engelhardt is working very hard as our Public Relation’s Chairman and need’s anyone’s input on any type of advertisement for any functions that she can report on. Please send any information to Kimberly at [email protected].

Please get with her for recording of events. Also Joyce England is our Commu-nity Service Chairman and would appreciate all of you to turn in your Community Service hours and functions that you have done and continue to report them to her for her yearly reporting as needed. Cathy Huett did a great job collecting for Education and will be do-ing this again in Jan time frame.

Midwinter Conference will be held November 13 and 14th in Orlando. Please make reservations now if you plan to go.

Yours in Service,

ALA President

Marie Taylor

SOME DAY A friend of mine opened his wife’s underwear drawer and picked up a silk paper wrapped package this he said isn’t any ordinary package.

He unwrapped the box and stared at both the silk paper and the box.

She got this the first time we went to New York, 8 or 9 years ago. She has never put it on, was saving it for a special occasion.

Well, I guess this is it

He got near the bed and placed the gift box next to the other clothing he was taking to the funeral home, his wife had just died.

He turned to me and said: Never save something for a special occasion. Every day in your life is a special occasion.

I still think those words changed my life. Now I read more and clean less.

I sit on the porch without worrying about anything.

I spend more time with my family, and less at work.

I understand that life should be a source of experience to be lived up to, not sur-vived through.

I no longer keep anything.

I use crystal glasses every day.

I’ll wear new clothes to go to the super-market, if I feel like it.

I don’t save perfume for special occa-sions; I use it whenever I want to.

The words, Someday and One day are fading away from my dictionary. If it’s worth seeing, listening or doing, I want to see, listen or do it now. I don’t know what my friend’s wife would have done if she knew she wouldn’t be there the morning, this nobody can tell.

I think she might have called her rela-tives and closest friends.

She might call old friends to make peace over past quarrels.

I’d like to think she would go out for Chinese, her favorite food.

It’s these small things I would regret not doing, if I knew my time had come.

Each day, each hour, each minute is special.

Live for today, for tomorrow is prom-ised to no one.

ONE OF THES DAY’S, REMEM-BERS THAT ONE DAY IS FAR AWAY OR MIGHT NEVER COME COME.

Yours In Service,

Bill Scott

Hello to my fellow Legionnaires, Auxiliary, and SAL members, This letter is for everyone but mostly to Legionnaires because only we can make final decisions concerning our Post. We really need to revisit the non-smoking policy. It’s time to eliminate smoking in the confines of our Post. I’m not saying you can’t smoke at Post 152. I’m saying smoke outside the way you do at home and every other gathering place. Does that sound harsh? What is harsh is putting non-smokers through the discomfort of having to endure the smell and potential health issues that go with smoking. A lot of us used to smoke and fortunately we were able to get that monkey off our back. I do not propose to anyone that is an easy task. That is why we don’t want to be exposed constantly to it at a place we go to have fun and relax with friends. I love to bring friends and relatives to our club when in town, but none of them smoke and I really don’t think it is fair to subject them to it. I usually tell them it is a smoking establishment and more often than not, they decline to go. We are losing club participation because of the smoke. People join and come once and say there is too much smoke and we don’t see them anymore. Why join if you don’t go? I wouldn’t. I run the bingo on Wednesday night and have lost at least six players to not liking the smoking envi-ronment. Some because of health issues that forces them to stay away from smoking areas. All these no shows are a loss of revenue and good people. People who might like to get involved to make our Legion progress into the future. To ask smokers to go outside is an inconvenience, to drive people away because of smoking is foolish for the future of our Post. Just a side note. Between the cost of the upkeep of the smoke eaters, the ozone generator, the filter replacement on the HVAC systems, the repainting due to nicotine staining and the loss of hall rentals because of the smell that never goes away, is keeping smoking in the building really financially smart?

Regards,Lon Hathaway, SGT a t Arms
