MOTION a Grant an Extension Moved by Councillor Paquette, seconded by Councillor Hudson be it resolved that Council grant an extension under the Orderly and Peaceful Conduct By‐law to the owners of the Hillsdale House Inn to allow music until midnight on October 11, 2014 as requested. CARRIED MOTION b Application AR14‐021‐HER Moved by Councillor Hudson, seconded by Councillor Mersereau, that Council gives the applicant at 21 Church Street heritage approve to repair and replace the emergency fire escape as detailed in application AR14‐021‐HER, providing all conditions of the Land Use By‐law are met. CARRIED MOTION c Ratification of Electronic Vote re: Leaf and Yard Waste Keys Moved by Deputy Mayor Power, seconded by Councillor Hudson to ratify the motion moved, seconded and carried unanimously July 23, 2014 as follows: “a) That Council rescind the July 21, 2014 motions regarding the leaf and yard waste drop‐off site keys for residents and contractors; b) that Council approve that new keys be made available to all residents, business occupants, or owners of in‐Town properties or a contractor regularly employed by them to assist with yard and tree maintenance, and who are currently authorized holders of an old key to the lock at the leaf and yard waste drop‐off site at no extra cost; c) that residents, business occupants, or owners of in‐Town properties or a contractor regularly employed by them to assist with yard and tree maintenance, who wish access to the leaf and yard waste drop‐off site, and who do not have an old key be required to pay a non‐refundable key deposit in the amount of $25; d) that at the time of issuance of a key in accordance with b) or c) above, an agreement that includes Conditions as set‐out in the attached outline that has been reviewed by Council shall be obtained from the recipient; e) that the provisions of this motion shall be incorporated in an updated policy that is to be developed in respect of the future operation of the Leaf and yard Waste Drop‐Off Site. Annapolis Royal to Host the 3rd Annual North American Conkers Championship

Conkers? Has anyone really heard of conkers? New to many Nova Scotians, but an old tradition for anyone of British heritage, Conkers has been making a reappearance in Annapolis Royal in recent years. The game of conkers involves, quite simply, a chestnut on a string. Well, two actually, as each person in the duel requires the same armament. The objective – to break your opponent’s conker. Sounds simple, but it is actually quite difficult and makes for great fun for participants and spectators alike. To quote the Annapolis Royal organizers, conkers is “A game of Kings and school boys - This centuries old form of sporting battle is about to re-emerge.” The 3rd Annual North American Conkers Championship will be held “centre-Courtyard” at the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens on Saturday, October 18 during the Winter Market. Registration is at 10am and the tournament begins at 10:30am as participants vie for the coveted Crofton Chalice. No entry fee, no experience necessary, all ages welcome! For details, visit www.annapolisroyalconkerclub.ca After the tournament, head over to the Annapolis Royal Golf Club at 2:00pm to try your hand at a putting competition that will drive you NUTS, during the “Great Putting Challenge”. Yes, you guessed it – instead of balls you will be putting with conkers! Putter and conkers are provided. While it is not normally a title to brag about, the Town of Annapolis Royal will proudly call itself a GHOST TOWN this October! From October 17 to 31, Annapolis Royal will take on ghostly aura as the spirits of the past take over the Town for this Halloween-inspired festival. The schedule includes a spook-tacular array of events. The Sinclair Inn Museum Haunted House, O’Dell House Museum’s Hidden Hauntings and the Historic Gardens Ghostly Gardens are running each Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening (Oct 17-19, 24-26). A GHOST TOWN PASSPORT will allow you access to all three of these family-fun activities, or individual tickets are available as well. Alan Melanson will lead his renowned Candlelight Graveyard Tours on October 18 and 25, with a special discount price for PASSPORT holders. Look for other Halloween-themed events in the community. Enjoy shows at King’s Theatre, a creepy “Ghost Village”, our Haunted Winter Market on Saturday mornings, and the North American Conkers Championship on October 18. GHOST TOWN has gained popularity since its inception a few years back and attracts hundreds of people to Annapolis Royal in late October. The Haunted House at Sinclair Inn Museum and Ghostly Gardens at the Historic Gardens have fast become popular pre‐Hallowe’en outings for families from all over the Valley, and other organizations have jumped on Board with some great events and workshops. To expand the effort, WE NEED YOU! We ask residents and businesses alike to “Get your GHOST on” early, and do some cool decorating on your properties, before October 17. We would really love to have the whole Town decked out for Halloween, so that visitors can witness the community spirit and really get an overall GHOST TOWN impression throughout the Town. Waste Collection is Wednesday as per Week #1 of the Valley Waste Calendar
Garbage Odour Control Tip Generally, there are THREE reasons why a compost bin might develop a less than pleasant odour: #1. It's too moist; #2. It's not getting enough air; #3. There isn't enough brown matter in the pile. If you've got too much moisture in your compost, usually adding a nice layer of brown matter will help dry things out a bit. Brown composting materials are things like DRIED leaves, sawdust, newspaper, straw, hay, etc. If not getting enough air, take a rake or pitch fork or shovel, and turn the materials over to aerate your pile to ensure enough air gets into the mass. Look for more tips next month!

including some new active play elements as well as some landscape features. These will help encourage skill building physical
activity in younger children, and give parents a wonderful environment to spend some family time. For details on the project

New Fitness Program for Fall 2014 The Annapolis Living and Learning Institute is offering a new fitness program Monday and Thursday evenings from 5‐6pm, starting September 29. The program is designed for adults and seniors who’ve never attended fitness classes or exercised before, and will gradually help one develop their strength and flexibility. Some very basic weights, a low tension resistance band, and a yoga mat are required. The instructor is a certified seniors’ fitness instructor, and encourages anyone to come give it a try!
