• He began his military career as a leader of the 1791 slave rebellion in the French colony of Saint Domingue.
• At first he was on the side of the Spanish.
• Then the French got rid of slavery, so he switched to their side and fought the British and Spanish.
• Slowly he gained control over the whole island.
• The French changed their minds and set up slavery again in Haiti.
• Haiti went to war with France.
• 1801 – L’Ouverture made his colony independent from France and wrote a constitution.
• He set himself up as governor for life
• By 1803 Napoleon was tired of fighting Haiti: he & L’Ouverture agreed to terms of peace.
• Napoleon agreed to recognize Haitian independence.
• L’Ouverture agreed to retire.
• The French invited L’Ouverture to come to a negotiating meeting with full safe conduct.
• When he arrived, the French (at Napoleon's orders) betrayed the safe conduct and arrested him, putting him on a ship headed for France.
