SL Government’s current activities An accelerated development program in Tourism industry was launched by Srilankan government under the Mahinda ChintanaThe target level is to reach 2.5 million tourists annually, by the year 2016 Attract USD 3,000 Mn as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to the country within 5 years.Increase the tourism related employment from 125,000 in 2010 to 500,000 by 2016 and expand tourism based industry and services al island.Distribute the economic benefits of tourism to a larger cross section of the society and integrate tourism to the real economy.Increase the foreign exchange earnings from USD 500 Mn in 2010 to USD 2.75 Bn by 2016.Contribute towards improving the global trade and economic linkages of Sri Lanka.Position Sri Lanka as the world’s most treasured island for tourism.

Significance of StudyThe Nations development on Tourism, depends on region’s development. The most of the places in Srilanka are so familiar but Jaffna district was isolated because of the past war. In this post war situation there is a vast range of demand for tourism in the district. Fulfilling the supply side may absorb a lot of tourists.Past Studies are related to

Lack of study about the conflict regions Especially in Tourism Sector

The one of the aim of this study is full filling the Research Gap This study contains the current situation of tourism in the peninsula, Finding the barriers and constraints and finding out the Development prospects.

Study AreaJaffna District is the Northern end of the Northern Province of Srilanka, about 410 Km away from Colombo.

It consists of the peninsula and 7 inhabited Island.

Jaffna has been divided in to 15 DS/AGA Divisions Those 15 were taken for the study.

Jaffna district is one of the war effected region in the Island due to the past 3 decades. In this postwar situation Jaffna has not only become a momentous region but also has become a Tourist spot. Around 200,000 local and foreign tourists arrives monthly. (Sundayobserver.2010.02.14)

Due to the significant of the Tourism sector this study is to be practiced in this region.

Research Problem

There are numerous resources related to tourism in the peninsula, but the development is not enough to make sure the sector as a remarkable one through out the nation. So the key problem of this study is “How to make the peninsula's Tourism as more effective one”.

Objectives of the StudyTo find out the development opportunities of the peninsula's Tourism under the following paths.

After war

To highlight the barriers of the tourism sector in Jaffna district at the post-war situation.

To determine specific recommendations to enhance the tourism sector of Jaffna district.

Methodology of the Study

Both Qualitative and quantitative methods(Qualitative research is to be highly applied in this study)

Two types of data will be used in this research. Study such as secondary data and primary data.Primary data sources will be mostly used to this study.(The reasons that I have preferred primary sources are: Lack of secondary resources related to the study, Tourism was not a significant field before the post-war)

Documentation of the Ministry of Economic Development, Sri Lanka: all legislation and formal reports relating to tourism industry & Northern Province development. 6. Srilankan Governments official publications .7. Documents of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) 8. Published annual reports of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) 9. 2. Chapter two: Theoretical background is given in this second chapter. It includes concepts and definitions of Tourism, different types of motivations, past research and history of the concept.

3. Chapter Three: Development opportunities, both the supply side & demand side factors of the Tourism sector in the following situations before war, during war, after war to be itemized.

4. Chapter Four: Identifying the barriers& Constraints of Tourism sector which is currently in Jaffna district

5. Chapter Five: Conclusion and the recommendations to make the tourism sector as most effective one.
