4 January 2013

Greetings to all, GWTA!

Ho, ho, ho, and a Happy New Year! Now that the holidays are over we’re looking forward to springtime riding. Hopefully, everyone has their bikes covered, prepared for winter storage and batteries on a tender. If we take good care of our bikes they’ll last us and be ready to go when we need them. Make sure to air up tires as they will deflate somewhat over the winter months. Remember to check air pressure in the springtime when you get ready to ride along with regular maintenance. We especially look forward to springtime riding as we’ve moved north and closer to the Rockies - a great place to ride. It’s also much closer to my workplace at CSU in Fort Collins so I’ll be riding my bike to work more. We hope everyone is looking forward to attending Gold Rush at Big Sky Montana in July because we’re looking forward to seeing you! We plan to take a few extra days and include a visit to Yellowstone National Park.

We began Directorship of our local Chapter, Front Range Gold in early 2011 and at our latest meeting turned over the gavel to new Director, Ron Gustafson. His wife, Sharon will be supporting him by his side. Thank you, friends! Looking back, I realize that I’m not the same person I was two years ago. The same could be said about pre-riding days. I found that what began as determination transformed into ‘putting rubber to the road’ would serve to develop confidence in riding ability. At first distracted by the handling of the bike, I eventually came to feel one with my bike, acutely aware of my environment, and safety consciousness. With the position of leadership, I was at first, shaky but with time learned to relax, go with the flow, draw upon creativity, and become a better listener. I was surprised by determination and confidence. My dad always told me, that ‘if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right.’Perhaps he would be proud of me. I sincerely hope you know joy in your ride and perhaps right now you realize how much it means to you because you miss it greatly. Riding with your friends is one of the best things in life! So looking ahead past the snow and icy roads, Dan and I hope you hold dear memories of trails behind and cherish the trails ahead yet to be discovered. Happy trails in 2013! Happy and Safe Ride in the New Year!

Kathleen and Dan Barker

P.S. Thanks, Dan for your kindness, patience, and your support!

5TOURING NEWS

It is that time of year again when Chapters nominate Family of the Year candidates. What is Family of the Year? They represent all of GWTA. They are liaisons that spread our mission statement of “Destination Friendship” wherever they go. FOA candidates are chosen by their peers which is a great honor. Then Chapter representatives compete with all candidates within that state, usually through a voting process established by the State Director to become State Family of the Year. Again the process is continued to the Regional level usually at a regional event or meeting. The final candidates for each region are then required to go to Gold Rush where they are again voted on by a panel of independent judges, the morning before opening ceremonies. All of the candidates are then brought up on stage where one is announced as the reigning Family.

The responsibilities of that Family are to write an article for Touring News each month for the full 1 year term to help promote Destination Friendship. That Family is then given free room and registration for the following years Gold Rush. They are also asked to help assist with the next years process. A runner up FOTY is announced as well on the morning of opening ceremonies to step in if for any reason the reigning Family cannot fulfill their obligations.

We encourage all Chapters, States and Regions to nominate a Family that they want to represent them. Again it is a great honor to be nominated by your peers. If you have any further questions feel free to ask your Regional Director.

What is it, this Special Golden Heart Award?

This program was developed to show recognition to a person or persons (whether or not they are a member of GWTA) who have given of themselves to assist members of our association. Many of us will pitch in and do the right thing, then there are those who will go above and beyond; these are the people who although they seldom seek recognition, deserve it just the same.

Recipients of the Golden Heart Award will receive a certificate of recognition, an antiqued gold pin and the story of their good deeds published in Touring News.

There are many heart-warming stories or happenings that often go unrecognized except for a very sincere ‘thank you’. Giving this award is another way of saying thanks with an added bonus. Each time the recipient sees the Golden Heart Award certificate, or puts on the Golden Heart pin, that ‘thank you’ will ring out loud and clear once again.

Gold Rush 2013

An Introduction to Big Sky Resort

Gold Rush is heading back to the treasure state. This time, it’s in Big Sky Country. Big Sky Resort is located in the town of Big Sky, in-between Bozeman and West Yellowstone. With a year round population of 2,300, Big Sky is in the business of tourism. Each year, the ski and summer resort hosts thousands of guests from around the world.

Here’s a little history lesson. Big Sky Resort was the direct vision of Chet Huntley (hence the Huntley Lodge), a Montana native and NBC news broadcaster. Three days before the opening in December of 1973, Chet Huntley passed away. Boyne Resorts of Michigan purchased the property two years later, and remains the operator today.

Now 39 Years later, Big Sky Resort is honored to be the host of the 2013 Gold Rush event. The Resort is located in Mountain village which is the heart of all the action, and where most Gold Rush functions are held. Big Sky Resort offers several lodging options that will fit any reservation size and budget. If you are looking for a host property, consider it being the entire resort. The walkable campus provides all the convenience you are looking for. The most popular lodging option will be the Huntley lodge, which is connected to the Conference Center. Higher end properties include the Village Center, Summit Hotel and Shoshone Condominiums.

What can you do on property? The Gold Rush operations team has another exciting schedule planned. First, don’t forget your camera, because the scenic beauty alone will keep you very busy. During your free time, stop by the Big Sky Basecamp desk to zip line, mountain bike or ride the scenic lift. The town of Big Sky also features whitewater rafting, horseback riding and fly fishing. Is Yellowstone National Park on your bucket list? Big Sky is just 45 miles from the West entrance of the park.

Yellowstone National Park won’t be the only opportunity for wildlife viewing. Big Sky Resort is wound tightly with the Yellowstone ecosystem. So, it’s not uncommon to spot a bear, moose, elk and more. If a real life encounter is too close for comfort, you can watch movies on Yellowstone in the amphitheater inside the Yellowstone Conference Center.

We truly look forward to your arrival. Make your reservations now by calling Big Sky Central Reservations at 800-548-4486. For more information, visit www.bigskyresort.com

-Katie Grice, Big Sky Resort

Each month, Big Sky Resort will feature a new article in touring news to keep you informed and updated on the Gold Rush event.

18 January 2013

Other than writing my first article for Touring News last month, I have not had to do much in the National Rider Education area but that has changed this month. As my really first official act, I would like to congratulate Mike Zmiarovich from Chapter Z in Washington for obtaining his 9th year renewal pin for Level IV. I hope to see many more renewals in the upcoming months for all Levels. If you need information on the Rider Education Program contact your Chapter RED. If your Chapter does not have a RED, I would like you to encourage your Chapter to get involved somehow – someway. The more we all get involved the safer we become when on two, three or four wheels. Now you might ask, what could I mean by “four wheels”? If you have every taken a Safety Course and if you think about the techniques you learned, I will bet you use many of them when driving your “cage” – think about it! The other night, I was talking to a fellow motorcycle riders and we were discussing having passengers on our bikes. The discussion reminded me of two recommendations I always make to potential riders and current riders who are deciding to have a passenger. Recommendation #1 –If you are going to have a passenger, have them take at least the Basic Rider Course. Some might not consider this a good investment if they don’t ever plan to be a rider. There are a couple of reasons I make this recommendation:

A. In the Basic Course there is a discussion of how a passenger should ride on the back of a bike and this will mean you don’t have to teach them the proper techniques.

B. By virtue of taking the course, I have found that a passenger has a much greater appreciation of what a motorcycle driver deals with in driving. The class teaches a lot of techniques that the driver must use to be safe and why not educate the passenger so they can help you while riding.

C. The most important reason for this recommendation has to do with the rider’s health. If something happens to the rider while driving (and it has in the past), the passenger will have the knowledge about the controls of a motorcycle in order to, hopefully, make a safe stop.

Recommendation #2 – If you are talking to someone who is planning to ride a motorcycle, I always recommend they take the Basic Rider Course before they buy a motorcycle. Why do this?

A. It is better to find out if you can physically and mentally handle a bike before you buy one to put in your garage. I have known of a few cases where someone bought a $20K bike, put it in their garage and then took the class. After attempting to complete the class a few times, they decided they did not have the coordination to handle the controls. This meant they had a $20K bike now depreciated to sell – ouch the possible lose can really hurt.

B. It is always better to start out riding properly so take the class first. There is a famous saying, “One step at a time” and this is the best first step.

A question for you all – when is the last time you took a Safety Class of any kind. I have been riding for over 25 years and find that each time I teach a MSF Class my skills are improved. Think about improving yours by taking a class. SAFETY TIP OF THE MONTH: CHECK YOURSELF Before riding season check “yourself”. Make sure you are physical, mentally, and socially ready to ride your bike. See you on the Road and be Safe Doug Green National Rider Education Director [email protected]

19TOURING NEWS

Where are we headed as an association? Our country they tell us is close to falling off a cliff soon because the representatives we elected into office cannot get along and come to a compromise over what will work for everyone. They are too busy blaming each other for the problems that exist and cannot look at the future to find a solution. Does any of this sound familiar?

Our Organization is close to falling off a cliff also. We continue to decline in numbers while our financial obligations continue to rise. Members are too quick to blame others as to why we are in this position or turn away and say it is not my problem. It is far more important to look for solutions for our survival for our organization. After all it is OUR organization.

Like everyone else my personal job has been stressful, tedious and exhausting. One evening while driving home from the airport, I flipped thru the radio stations. I caught a Christian station that was playing a song called “I Refuse” by Josh Wilson. The lyrics were haunting as I related them to many aspects in my life including GWTA. The main jest of the song is: I refuse to sit back and wait for someone else do what I know in my heart needs to be done. I refuse to turn away and pretend that the troubles I see are something that I cannot change. I refuse to let things happen around me that I know are wrong and not take a stand and try to correct them myself. I refuse to be helpless… I will help and take an active part to continue our organization. It is up to YOU to take your part.

I watched World News Tonight with Diane Sawyer and loved the segment called “Made In America”. They followed people shopping for this holiday season and asked how many items they had bought were actually made in America. No one was aware of where their purchases were made. They seemed embarrassed that they hadn’t even looked for that when they made their purchase. They said if every person in America would just buy $64 worth of products made in America we could boost the economy, create jobs and steer us clear of the fiscal cliff. If every member would recruit a friend our organization would have a very bright future. It is that simple just like buying a product made in America. Take the time to turn a product over and look at the tag. Take the time to express your love for our organization to someone else. I cannot think of anything else in my life that has allowed me to meet and befriend so many wonderful people. GWTA certainly has created a difference in my life and people I truly love.

All of this leads to being conscious of your actions. Refusing to accept things the way they are because you are unwilling to change them. GWTA is falling off a cliff risking the end of our beloved Association because we are not willing to recruit a friend. If each of us just recruited one friend into our Association it would change our future dramatically. Recruiting can be as simple as bringing a photo album of your motorcycling journeys to work with you one day and showing your co-workers all the fun you’ve had with your fellow members throughout the country. It can be as simple as stopping a fellow motorcyclist and complimenting their motorcycle. Or simply drop off some applications with a personal note attached to your local motorcycle, ice cream or coffee shop.

You are in the driver seat. Refuse to let your association fall off the cliff without being a part of its future. Make a change one friend at a time. I don’t want to write another empty plea for help. GWTA needs you to show your heart and find a friend.

On a very positive note we as members of GWTA have retired our debt to Touring News this past December. This debt has hung over our heads for years. We have made a onetime payment that retired all our past due debt of Touring news. The amazing part of this is it has been done with all sorts of contributions from our members, chapters, states and regions. We are now current as we continue to pay our monthly charges to the Touring News publisher. This has been a tremendous hurdle that we have gone over and should be very proud of as members of GWTA as this was truly a combined effort of sacrifice and love of our association to obtain this goal. We can continue on to have fun, make friends and recruit to make our association even stronger.

We have some very exciting events in our near future to look forward to. We are on facebook with very exciting ideas and look in which we will offer all sorts of exciting information, events and discounts. Join us on facebook and “like” GWTA. A very exciting new web page is coming that will be fun and informational for our organization. Fun events and information are helping our future look very bright for GWTA. GWTA has a very positive direction in the future. Lets get out and ride and enjoy the fun of our organization. Lets not fall off anyone’s cliff!!!! Best wishes for a prosperous and blessed new year.

Ride Safe

Yours in Friendship
