Stories of origin and creation govern how all cultures understand themselves. For the 25 contributors to Somebody’s Child, the topic of adoption is not—and perhaps never can be—a neutral issue. With unique courage, each of them talks about his or her experience of the adoption process. Some speak of heartbreak; some have found modi-fied “happy endings”; others have discovered joy. All have been changed by discover-ing the vital facts of their own birth and origin.

Somebody’s Child contains a wide array of true stories: a young man explores his love for his adopted sister; a woman comes to grips with the truth about her birth par-ents; a mother of two talks about meeting her “first son,” the baby she gave up; and, a lawyer tells about discovering her Nigerian family. Somebody’s Child captures the many unforgettable faces and voices of adoption.

The third book in a family of anthologies about the 21st-century family, Somebody’s Child follows up on Nobody’s Mother and Nobody’s Father, two essay collections from childless adults on parenthood, family and choices. Together, these three books chal-lenge readers to redefine our traditional definitions of the concept of “family.”

The Islands Investigations International team is back! This time, Kyra Rachel and Noel Franklin are sleuthing around Quadra Island in the employ of Noel’s old high school buddy, Jason Cooper. In a quiet wooded area of the island, Jason, his wife and two younger boys are worried for the oldest son in the family. Derek was discovered badly beaten in the woods by Campbell River and has remained in a deep coma for three weeks. Desperate to find out what happened to his son and why, Jason hires Noel and Kyra.

As the two get to know the sleepy island community, they’re surprised to discover that Derek may have been in on a drug deal—but why? Others in the community describe him as a decent young man with a good head on his shoulders—what could have possibly pushed him to deal in drugs? Kyra and Noel aren’t even certain the drug deal is connected to the attack, so who would want to hurt this young man and why? Kyra and Noel are determined to find out what circumstances could have drawn this happy family into such dark territory.

It’s the winter of 1884, and five hundred Canadian Pacific Rail workers have halted their push through the Rockies at Holt City, an isolated shantytown in the shadow of the Continental Divide. The men are tired and cold, and patience is as scarce as the rationed food. Then, Deek Penner, a CPR section boss, is brutally murdered at the end of the track. His body is found frozen on the banks of the Bow River.

Durrant Wallace, a veteran of the celebrated March West by the North West Mounted Police a decade earlier, is returned to active duty to investigate the murder. Durrant lost his leg in a gun battle with whiskey traders three years previous, and he struggles with being a Mounted Police officer who cannot ride. When Durrant arrives, Holt City is ripe with possible suspects: illegal whiskey smugglers, spies for rival rail-ways, explosives dealers and a mysterious Member of Parliament who insists on getting his meddling fingers into everybody else’s business. Durrant must use his cunning and determination to discover to identify the killer before he finds his next victim and derails the great Canadian national dream in the process.

Danny Swanson, Department of Fisheries and Oceans employee and ex-fisherman, isn’t exactly upset when he’s reassigned from a desk job in Ottawa to an at-sea job on the West Coast. His superiors think they’re punishing him for his indiscretions, but Danny is pleased to be back on the Pacific, reconnecting with his old fishing buddies. Revisiting his past life, though, is trolling up some old memories, including a troubling incident from ten years ago, when Danny and his crew pulled up a deformed fish. It was young Billy who decided to bring the odd creature to the DFO in Vancouver for examination. Billy and the fish were never seen again. Now, Danny’s buddy is on his mind when he stumbles across a photo of the fish in the DFO databases, and suddenly, Danny can’t let Billy’s disappearance get swept under the rug.

With the help of RCMP Sergeant Louise Karavchuk, Danny starts hauling old histories to the surface and delving into what he starts to believe may be a massive conspiracy. Who can Danny trust in his search for the truth? The organized, well-dressed officials of the DFO? Or his somewhat rowdy and rough-around-the-edges fishing buddies from the past?

With years spent working as a fisherman, commercial diver, and most recently, an at-sea-observer, Bruce Burrows is a true man of the sea. During his time as a fisherman, he wrote a weekly column called “Channel 78, Eh” about fishing on the West Coast. His collected columns can be found in Blood on the Decks, Scales on the Rails (1992). Bruce lives on a small island off the northeast coast of Vancouver Island. The River Killers is his first novel.

When Fort Victoria was first established in the mid-nineteenth century, eight pioneer families of Europe’s upper class formed the social elite of the modest colony. The self-named aristocracy of this new land, these families shaped a world suited to their proper tastes on the upper floors of the fort, and eventually, in beautiful homes that imitated the height of fashion in Europe. However, between their tea parties and balls, these particular families greatly influenced the progress of the city of Victoria and the province of British Columbia.

In Above Stairs, get to know the the Douglases, the Pembertons, the Skinners, the Creases, the O’Reillys, the Trutches, the Rithets and the Barnards. These families made laws, surveyed land, founded businesses and set a standard of social acceptability for all those living in Victoria at the time. Like a kitchen hand sneaking up the ser-vants’ steps to spy on the rich, discover the glamorous, complicated lives of Victoria’s social elite in Above Stairs.

In 1864, headstrong Pinkerton man Zachary Beddoes is tired of guarding hotels and railway stations, so he decides to quit his life of private law-enforcement and head west for gold. In San Francisco, Zachary hears that the best goldfields are north in the “Devil’s own region”: British Columbia. Undeterred by warnings of how rough and unforgiving the Barkerville goldfields can be, Zachary goes in search of his fortune. Not even a few weeks into his bold trek for riches, Zachary is forced to kill a man in self-defence, and perhaps unwisely, takes the dead man’s cache of stolen gold. Unwit-tingly turned outlaw, Zachary must flee into the bush and rely on a Chinese prospec-tor named Rosh to keep him alive.

In an adventure Zachary could never have dreamed up, he and Rosh dodge bullets, prevent Rosh’s wife from being kidnapped, and survive in the harsh wilderness. Set in the wild west of the north, Zachary defies nature and the will of Canada’s lawmen in a desperate feat to survive.

Stan Krumm was raised about 50 miles from the historic town of Barkerville and was intrigued by Canadian history from a young age. After taking over the family business as a jeweller/goldsmith, he took inspiration from the forest surrounding his home on the Quesnel River and penned Zachary’s Gold. The year of its original publication, BC BookWorld called Zachary’s Gold the summer fiction “book to read.” Stan lives in Quesnel, BC.

Roderick L. Haig-Brown welcomes us onto his lush farm for a year of insights and observations. In this eloquently written account, Haig-Brown, his wife Ann and their four children tour us through each season, and teach us the ways in which the Earth governs the events in our lives. Haig-Brown observes salmon, blue grouse, blacktail deer and robins, with a soft eye and gentle appreciation for their trials. He discerns how the weather interacts with the land, and how the land interacts with our attempts at civilization. Haig-Brown also discusses his work at a magistrate, and the challenges of marriage, amateur book collecting, the craft of the writer, and the meaning of com-munity. A snap shot of rural BC in the 1950s, Measure of the Year is a country story, told by a man happy in his chosen way of life.

Roderick L. Haig-Brown (1908-1976) was a Canadian writer, magistrate and conservationist. A prolific writer, he is the author of twenty-eight books and hundreds of articles, essays and poems. Some of the titles include Saltwater Summer (Governor General Award Winner, 1948), A River Never Sleeps, and Fisherman’s Summer. In recognition of his contribution to Canadian environmental literature, the Haig-Brown name has been gifted to a national park near Kamloops, a Canada Council sponsored writer-in-residence retreat near Campbell River, and a mountain on Vancouver Island.
