One minute he's telling us to tie our kangaroos down and the next he's oohing and aahing over an injured pooch. But the lovable Aussie - whose face is just as furry as anything you're likely to see on the show- is adored so much in Britain that we could forgive him for anything. Last year, he celebrated his 50th year in showbiz with a sell-out concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Animal Hospital may now have finished its final series, but Rolf is back this week with a four-part special taking us on a journey through the shows 10 years on Tv. Before Animal Hospital,which focused on the sick pets brought in to the RSPCAHarmsworth . MemorialAnimal : Hospital in London, Rolf was licking his : own wounds when ITV : axed his kids' series Rolf'sCartoonClub. But its loss was the BBC's gain: his venture into veterinary science regularly attracted 10 million viewers at its peak. So what made the show so successful? We delivered it with a straight face and we weren't trying to be snide or clever. After all, here's the owner, sick with worry about their lovely little pet - in some cases that little dog is the only thing between them and utter loneliness: In this series, Rolf talks intimately about his personal highs and lows on the show, and we hear from RSPCAvets and inspectors as well as celebrity fans and passionate viewers. 'A massive high point for me was seeing an operation for the first time: enthuses Rolf. 'It was a little dog that had an infected womb, full of pus. Vet David Grant called the shots: "Operate now, or the dog dies." So 1got my greens on and David said, "If you're going to faint, faint backwards, away from the table. If you faint forwards, you'll affect the sterility of the equipment. And if : you're going to be sick, don't ask permission : - just get the hell out of the room." It was : tension extraordinaire! But the good news was that the dog was fine, and to see a dog. greet its owner a week later and jump up into: their arms is truly wonderful: But there have been low points. 'For me: sa:'s Rolf,'they were the cases of cruelty. 1 " mean, how can anyone do that to an animal? The cat that sunk its teeth right through my hand - that was a pretty low moment! My father always said, "If you're going to be bitten, don't fight the bite. Stay absolutely still and the animal will let you go - then run like mad!" So that's what 1did: This week's show looks at the influence Animal Hospital had when it first hit our screens in 1994,and revisits the pets that had a big impact on viewers. Next week's programme looks at how Rolf took the show to the US and Australia. The third instalment reminds us of some of the most dramatic animal rescues of the decade while, in the fourth, Rolf looks at how the series was received in such places as Chile and Japan. So has Rolf ever been tempted to adopt any of his four-legged friends? 'I never saw any up for adoption as 1was always in the studio.
