Fourth Grader's Newspaper ClassTRANSCRIPT
Walking through the halls, Ms. Castillo keeps an eye on the kids. “We
want to make sure you are safe,” she says. She also helps parents and
teachers. Ms. Castillo is our new assistant principal. She came from Sam
Houston Elementary to Travis Magnet. She enjoys being an assistant
principal because she wants us to be lifelong learners. Her goal is to
learn every student’s name. We like you, we think you’re nice and
we’re excited to have you at Travis. We wish you a great year.

Thanksgiving Break
The Travis Secretary by Mrs. Quinonez’ Class
Click, clack, click, clack. If you walk into the office, you can
hear Ms. Dominguez doing her work on the computer. She
doesn’t hold a grudge and tries to see your point of view.
She respects people. She carries through Mrs. Taylor’s re-
quests. She does payroll and work orders. She is always
very busy. She feels honored to be at Travis. She’s made a
lot of friends here at school. She takes care of teachers,
and she says she’s pretty lucky. Mrs. Dominguez
I want to stay around kids and
education to help students become
lifelong learners.
Do you know what truancy is? Truancy is
a series of absences that can affect you. Truancy will cause a parent many prob-
lems because there is a truancy Texas law.
It is the Texas Education Code: Section
25.094. Ector County Independent School
District works with Student Assistant Ser-
vices, the district police department and the
Municipal Court to help stop truancy. The
consequences are fines and parents can even
go to jail. If students are not in school, how will they
learn? Truancy will hurt their education.
They will get behind in school and possibly
fail. It will affect their future. If they fail
their classes, they will miss out in sports and
may not get a college degree. There are many ways to improve school at-
tendance. One way schools can help students
get to school is by providing transportation to
everyone. Teachers and parents can motivate
students by encouraging them to go to school
every day. Giving Travis Bucks and attendance
awards will help kids feel good about coming to
school. Teachers can call or make home visits
to discuss why the student has many absences.
Teachers and parents can work together to im-
prove attendance. As you can see truancy is a serious problem.
It can be a problem for parents and the student.
There are ways to improve students’ attend-
ance.
Fifth grade students enjoy being in fifth
grade. They say that they are learning
many things in preparation for the
STAAR test. For example, in math they
are learning area and perimeter. Switch-
ing classes helps them learn different
subjects with all fifth grade teachers. They
say that all fifth grade teachers are nice
and funny. “They make us laugh,” said Brianna. The only thing they dislike is going to
Communications Lab one day a week. Getting along with their classmates makes
school a better place to learn. “Mrs. Taylor and Ms. Castillo lead us in the right direc-
tion by showing everyone respect.” Fifth graders are good role models for everyone
at Travis.

I love science because you
sometimes get to do fun
experiments. Travis is also fun because of the teachers.
They are the ones who
make it fun. Here at Travis
we have everything I like.

Remembering the first Thanksgiving gives us a
holiday to give thanks, to eat, pray and love. It started with the pilgrims back in 1620 when
the pilgrims traveled on the Mayflower to the new
world. One hundred ten pilgrims were on the
Mayflower. They landed at Plymouth Rock after
65 days of cold and damp weather. The Pilgrims
first winter was very cold and hard. Pilgrims did not have enough food to feed all
of the 102 colonists. They met an Indian named
Samoset who helped them. As a result Native
Americans taught them to plant and fish. Togeth-
er they all celebrated a good harvest. The first
Thanksgiving was a time to give thanks. Later George Washington declared the fourth
Thursday of November a day of giving thanks. To-
day we still do as the Pilgrims and Native Ameri-
cans did on the first Thanksgiving. We eat turkey
and have a big feast with our family and friends.
We give thanks and pray together. Today we play
games and watch football. Remembering the first Thanksgiving helps us
keep in mind the things we should be thankful for
as we eat, pray and love.

Jokes and Riddles Giving Thanks by Mrs. Shirley’s Class
Benjamin Franklin thought the wild turkey should’ve been the national bird
for the United States. We’re glad he didn’t get his way!
Domestic turkeys are so heavy they are unable to fly.
If you’re far away from a turkey you will hear them gobble up to a mile
away.
People like to eat turkey. The average person eats up to 18 pounds of tur-
key a year.
Thanksgiving is the time when more turkey is eaten. We advise all turkeys
to run and hide!
Fifth Grade Teacher
Ms. Horton
Why do turkeys always gobble?
They never learned good
manners!
Why did the turkey play the drums
in his band?
He already had drumsticks!
