Federal Programs School Improvement Planning Updates

Dear Principals,

The School Improvement Planning process has transitioned to the office of Federal Programs. This year the Google tool will be discontinued and we will implement the NC STAR school improvement tool.

Why NC Star

During the 2016-2017 school year, 30 schools were required to utilize NC STAR. In an effort to maintain district-wide alignment, all schools will transition to NC STAR in 2017 – 2018. NC STAR is a free tool provided by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and focuses on improving culture and climate, student achievement and subgroup achievement gaps.

SIP Team Training

Teams will be trained on two components: The NC STAR tool and the process Effective Improvement Planning

• If your school used the NC STAR tool during the 2016-2017 school year, only a ½ daytraining is needed.

• If your school will be new to the NC STAR, a full day training is required.• To assist in scheduling, we have pre-selected days for attendance. Please call or email if your

pre-selected date does not work for your team.

The date of your school’s training is outlined below. If you have any questions, feel free to email or call Dr. Dietrich Danner, Director of Federal Program, at [email protected] or (919) 560-9419.

Dear Middle School Principals,

We have concluded the interviews and made selections for the Middle School Content Coaches

who will support you during the 2017-18 school year. We appreciate your feedback and patience

as we have worked through this process to ensure our teachers will continue to have instructional

support in the absence of full time facilitators.

The chart below lists the roles and responsibilities of the Content Coaches. Content Coaches are

expected to spend the majority of their time working in schools with PLCs. I hope this provides

clarity on the scope of work and how we are planning to provide service to schools. In addition,

the Coaches are spending eight days this summer in training to ensure we are prepared to serve

the schools.

Content Coach Roles and Responsibilities

Provide support to school based Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) in the effective

use of the instructional framework to monitor and evaluate student progress and assist in the

continuous improvement of students.

Assist PLCs and administration with analysis, interpretation and use of data for instructional

and program planning including, but not limited to, i-Ready, EVAAS, Common District

Assessments (CDAs) and End-of-Grade (EOGs)/End-of-Course (EOCs) Assessments.

Assist teachers in using the Classroom Focused Improvement Process (CFIP) to analyze

diagnostic, classroom and State assessment data to inform instruction.

Coordinate and assist in the implementation of curriculum and instructional techniques at

the school and classroom levels.

Regularly assist PLCs with planning and lesson development.

Provide or assist in identifying professional development based on assessed student, teacher,

school and/or District needs.

Coach subject specific teachers using the coaching cycle (observation/feedback) and model

lessons.

Provide support related to District resources (curriculum maps, texts, online resources,

CDAs, EVAAS, Schoolnet, etc…)

The Middle Schools have been assigned to three groups and will be served by a team of Coaches

that will cover the areas of Math, ELA and Science. Team members will be reaching out to you

this summer to coordinate our visits with your PLC schedules. The groups are:
