Essential Question: How do scientists think our universe was created and what evidence

supports it?

Topic: Origins of the UniverseEssential Question: How do scientists think our universe was created and what evidence supports it?

The Universe• Defined as everything that

physically exists• All of space and time• All forms of matter and

energy

Topic: Origins of the UniverseEssential Question: How do scientists think our universe was created and what evidence supports it?

Big Bang Theory• All galaxies started from one

huge mass of densely packed matter

• The densely packed matter exploded with a “big bang” sending out matter and energy in all directions

• Over time the matter grouped together to form the stars and galaxies that now exist

Topic: Origins of the UniverseEssential Question: How do scientists think our universe was created and what evidence supports it?

The Red Shift• Evidence that the universe is

expanding (supports Big Bang Theory)

• Distant galaxies give off a red light

• The red end of the spectrum has the longest wavelengths

Topic: Origins of the UniverseEssential Question: How do scientists think our universe was created and what evidence supports it?

The Red Shift• If a galaxy is moving far away,

the wavelengths become longer (or stretched out)

• All galaxies beyond our own show a red shift, so it is believed that the universe is expanding

The Blue Shift•Galaxies that are moving closer give off a blue shift•If a galaxy is moving closer, the wavelengths become shorter giving off a blue shift

Open Universea model of the universe in which the universe expands forever

Closed UniverseA model of the universe in which the universe, because of gravity, everything ejected during the Big Bang will eventually be pulled back to a central point.

Now take some time…

• Take 2 minutes to go over your notes and highlight or underline the main ideas that answer the essential question, you should not highlight everything:

• Essential Question: How do scientists think our universe was created and what evidence supports it?

Time to use the left hand column

• You will now write your own questions using the verbs provided.
