GENERAL INFORMATION

- Nobody’s Boy (Sans Famille) is a French novel written by Hector Malot in 1878.- The most recent English translation is “Alone in the world” by Adrian de Bruyn.- In the midst of its early popularity, it was crowned by the Academy, and has stood the test of time as one of the masterpieces of French literature.

Nobody’s Boy can be devided into 2 volumes. The first volume is about Remi’s journey with Vitalis and how he met The Acquins. The second volume explains why Remi had to start his journey again and how he returned home.

THE FIRST VOLUME:

- Remi was a dropped child who was found by Jerome Barberin and had been brought-up by Jerome’s wife- Because of an accident, Jerome cannot earn for live. He decided to get rid of Remi.

- Vitalis offered to take Remi on as apprentice of money. Then, Remi left home, started the journey with the troupe.

THE FIRST VOLUME:

- During the journey with Vitalis, Remi had learned a lot of things. He also went to several places and met many kinds of people.

- One snowstorm night, beause of cannot a stop, they were collasped in front of the Acquins’house. And only Remi was rescued. He became a member of the family.

- One day, lot of terrible things happened to them. The animals died one after another and they were in a really bad situation.

THE SECOND VOLUME:

- After the terrible hail storm, Remi had to start the journey again.

- He met the Mattia on the way and they became companions. He also met the Driscolls and James Milligan, Arthur’s uncle.

- After lots of problems, Remi finally returned home with his friends.

MAIN CHARACTERS:

REMI: Remi is the main character of the story. He is stolen from his

familly because of the right of inheritance. He grows up with the troupe and drifts to many places. He has gone through many difficulties, accidents. He had been traped hungry for several days in the mine. He Also had been sent to the prison. But under no circumstance, he still remember the lifestyle which is taught by Vitalis. He is hard-working, honest, brave and righteous. Remi taught us a lot about the personality.

MAIN CHARACTERS:

VITALIS: Vitalis is one of the important character of the story.

He was a famous Italian meistersinger. But he dropped down and finally became a travelling artist. He tried his best, never begged for anything and had spent many situations. Because of the poverty and poor health, he died in a snowstorm night. But he had helped Remi become a good person in the future. He had a great affect on Remi even when he was passed away.

MAIN CHARACTERS:

MATTIA: Mattia is a little boy who is sent to Garofoli for

money. Garofoli thought that Mattia is stupid and incapable of working outside, he made Mattia to keep the house. Mattia is intelligent, vivacious an kind. He is a talented musician. Mattia helps Remi a lot during the hard journey. He is a really good companion.

ASSESSMENTS AND MORAL LESSONS

ASSESSMENTS: Nobody’s Boy is an interesting book. The story praises for noble actions, self- reliance and confidence, beautiful friendships and the art’s value. It represents the working scenery and the dangerous life of the people at that time. It also shows the author’s attitude to the sociaty. The book has a happy ending that Remi found his familly and lived happily with them. Loyal friendship and honest conduct are the vital ideals of this story, and the heart interest is expressed with such simplicity, directness and pathos, that the reader enters at once into fellowship with the wanderers, and shares in all their adventures to the end. But this isn’t a perfect book at all. Because of being a financial, the author made some limitaions for the story.

MORAL LESSONS:

The book teaches us many worth lessons. It brings us about the friendship, the iron will, the good dignity and the love. The book also shows us how to live as a man, how to be a good person under any circumstances. The book has great human civilization, many valuable lessons. In conclusion, the most important points of the book to the readers are the love and the the self-respectation.
