The Daily Challenge in Every Classroom

The daily challenge for teachers is to teach and improve literacy

for ALL learners.

The Primary Goal in Educating Students

To build “Independent Learning and Literacy Skills”

so that ALL learners have choices in the

post secondary world.

What is Literacy?

Literacy redefinedLiteracy redefined

"Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create,

communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated

with varying contexts.

What is Literacy?

Literacy involves a continuum of learning to enable an individual

to achieve his or her goals,to develop his or her knowledge and

potential, andto participate fully in the wider society."

- UNESCO

What is Literacy?

Meyer and Rose (2000) calls for an expanded definition of literacy:

“The new definition of literacy is based on a different assumption: that digital technology is

rapidly becoming a primary carrier of informationand that the broader means of expression this technology makes possible are now critical for

education. Text literacy is necessary and valuable, but no longer sufficient.”

The Importance of Reading

“More than any other subject or skill, our children’s futures are all

but determined by how well they learn to read.”

Research-Based Vocabulary Instruction

Vocabulary instruction significantlyaids comprehension:

Readers need to be familiar with at least 90% of words in reading.

“From elementary through high school, students need to acquire

2700 - 3000 words per year.”

National Research CouncilBeck and McKeown, 1991

Research-Based Vocabulary Instruction

• There is no one best method for vocabulary instruction; both direct and indirect instruction is needed

• Difference between explicit, systematic instruction vs. incidental exposure

• Reading (or being read to) is the single most important factor in increased word knowledge

• Memorizing dictionary definitions - not effective
