Eugen Popa: So what I would like to start with is: How did you start with hypnosis and why and when?

Tom Nicoli: When I got certified it was nothing additional to the basic core curriculum, page by page, and a month later I opened an office and I did what I called “fingers-crossed hypnosis”. It’s like I’d cross my fingers “I hope this works, I hope this works, I hope this works!” And afterwards I’d say “Wow, it works!” but I didn’t know how or why. So I was that person who was left without any contact. I didn’t know anyone and I found everything out on my own by doing research or watching video cassettes of different trainings or filmings at conventions. I would read, I would go online. And it was before – I got certified in 1999, YouTube wasn’t what it is now, Google wasn’t what it is now.

Technically there was still a lot of information around but nothing like now. So it was such an advantage but it can also become quite confusing and also misleading because not everyone has proper, ethical or accurate information. So, a quick rundown, when I first got into becoming professional at this process we call hypnosis I had already been using it because I had heard about it in a marketing piece of material, being an entrepreneur. It talked about the way you think, not your actions, because, as you’re reading this, your actions are good, it’s just how you think. So you get a guided imagery process, right? And it started to affect me and I said “Something’s going on here, I want to find out what this really is”. So I started researching and reading and realized that it is what we would refer to as self-hypnosis visualization process. It had a really serious enough effect on me, my behavior changes, that it made me really want to look into it.

So I started studying it, using it, at the time I was doing – construction dental technology as a dental technician and I would during the people that I managed down into the lunch room and I would just do this imagery: “Just close your eyes for a moment, just imagine this”. The attitudes got better, the tension went down and production went up. So I finally decided – and I’ve been a musician my whole life, for 45 years I’ve been a musician, since I was 10 – and I though ”That stage stuff would be really cool.” So I looked online – that’s when I first found the National Guild of Hypnotists. They were located in just the next state. There was a certified instructor in the city I was living in, just 4 miles north of Boston. So I went and talked to the man and I thought I was going to offer but 20 minutes and find out what the deal was and 2 hours later I came back home and said “I’m going to be a hypnotherapist!” And nobody knows what the heck that was, but that was it. When he started talking about the aspect of helping people with this process, it was – as I’d been told over the years by different people – it was what I was meant to do anyway and I have done it many, many times. So it was like music, nothing I asked for as a kid, it was just something I took to. And ironically enough, the gentleman who certified me told Dwight Damon “I have somebody here that truly had to become something”. And he even told me that he told Dwight that. And I said “Yeah, whatever”. Meanwhile, 15 and a half years later, being certified, I was becoming a little well known in the profession. Curious whatever he saw.

Eugen Popa: You say feelings is the best induction?

Tom Nicoli: Yeah! When I did a master-class at the National College of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy in London they asked me to also do a presentation the next morning. And I got tired of talking about the same stuff so I wrote a presentation on the plane while going over, and it was “Feelings – the entry into the client’s issue”. Once you’ve written it all – even sitting at my desk – I’ll have – I ask certain questions where I – there was a time when they would have to be crying or at least really uncomfortable emotionally, I didn’t start the session. Because I knew I was in. But a lot of times I wouldn’t be sitting at the desk, I’ll ask a certain question where I take what they just said and reframe it; the emotion is there because it’s all right under the surface, right under that seal. And I’ll just have them close their eyes right there, reframe them even though they’re wiping their tears, because the hypnosis process doesn’t necessarily require your clients to be closed or in deep relaxation.

Eugen Popa: If you were to give one single piece of advice to someone who starts in hypnosis what would that be?

Tom Nicoli: Learn, apply, then learn some more, and apply that, and then learn more and apply that. People don’t keep learning without application. How many courses they take and how many classes and how many seminars and you say “Well, how does that work?” and they go “I don’t know, I haven’t tried it yet”. Because after you apply what you learn you’ll know better what you need to learn.
