1 December 2011 Happy Holidays! The full color copy of this newsletter with pictures and hamfest flyers can be found at www.az-arrl.org or http://www.arrl.org/Groups/view/arizona 2011 Did you know that there are over 700,000 hams now in the US? An all time high. Over 17,000 of those are right here in Arizona as permanent residents. That does not include all of our winter visitors from all over the world. An estimated 5,000 hams visit us in the winter months. Most of our winter visitors do not get to see this newsletter since this is sent to only hams with Arizona addresses. The number of ARRL members in Arizona is also up and increasing. Did you know you get a free ARRL book by signing up or renewing your ARRL membership with me at the hamfests? Look for me at the Superstition Hamfest December 3 rd in Mesa AZ. (See attached flyer) Please print a copy and take to your next club meeting or send it to your club. This is your newsletter; let me know what you want in it. Happy Holidays, Tom K7DF. EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS During the month of November some of the amateur radio community participated in the Vigilant Guard Exercise around the state. The event played out two catastrophic events in the Phoenix area. It also tested mass evacuation of the Phoenix area along with all of the support that outlying areas can provide. One of the key components to make these types of operations successful is NIMS, the National Incident Management System. Every ham that plans on participating in Emcomm should take at the minimum the IC-100b and IC-700 courses. I also recommend IC-200 and for those with experience IC-800 course. These classes will help every ham understand where we fit and operate during an emergency. I heard first hand last week while monitoring radio traffic concerning a plane crash, just how uncoordinated rescue operations can be when NIMS isn’t instituted or followed. You can take the NIMS classes on-line at FEMA’s website at www.training.fema.gov/IS/NIMS.asp. CENTRAL ARIZONA DX ASSOCIATION SPECIAL EVENT OPERATION – K7UGA The Central Arizona DX Association is very pleased to announce our Special Event Operation in celebration of the Arizona Centennial during the week of February 13 -19, 2012. We will be using the call of the late Senior Senator, and Arizona native son, Barry M. Goldwater – K7UGA. Individual CADXA members will be operating from their home stations located throughout Arizona during that week using the call K7UGA. However, only special operating locations from Tucson, Prescott and Phoenix will be on the air celebrating the 100th anniversary on Tuesday, February 14, 2012. Operations will be on all Amateur Bands (160 – 2 Meters); and will be using SSB, CW, RTTY, PSK31 and Satellite modes. This CADXA Special Event Operation has proudly received recognition from the 2012 Arizona Centennial Foundation as a sanctioned “Special Event”; and from the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission as an official “Centennial Legacy Project”. All QSL requests go to Bob Davies – K7BHM (qrz.com) with an SASE. For more details, please go to our web-site at: www.cadxa.org PUBLIC INFORMATION COORDINATOR I want to thank Norm Seeley KI7UP for being our Public Information Coordinator (PIC). Norm has a long history in the broadcast business and he did a great job. However, he is stepping down and I need a new PIC. The PIC is a section-level official appointed by and reports to the Section Manager (SM) as the section's expert on public information and public relations matters. The PIC is responsible for organizing, training, guiding and coordinating the activities of the Public Information Officers (PIOs) within the section. More info can be found at http://www.arrl.org/public-information-coordinator Please contact me if you are interested in the position. Tom Fagan K7DF [email protected] OFFICIAL OBSERVERS NEEDED Jeff Daugherty, W0NWA, our Official Observer Coordinator is looking for Official Observers. The OO program serves as the first line of "eyes and ears" for the FCC. It is the backbone of the Amateur Auxiliary. OO’s are certified in the Auxiliary by passing a mandatory written examination. See attached flyer. [email protected] RADIO DIRECTION FINDERS Are you good at transmitting hunting or finding noise sources in your neighborhood? Both our Technical Coordinator Carl Foster KB7AZ [email protected] and our Official Observer Coordinator Jeff Daugherty W0NWA [email protected] could use your help. Give them a call and lend your expertise.
