International students face several challenges upon arriving in the United States

Most important are linguistic, cultural, and technological barriers (Brown 337-348)

Their information-seeking and communication styles are different. (Wang and Frank 207-216)

Adjusting to a new living and learning environment and getting familiar with the American educational system, the academic library structure, and how information is managed. (Kumar and Suresh 327-336)

How they use academic libraries. They have different library experiences, library vocabulary and jargon. They have different search habits, resources and services available to them. (Yi 666–673) (Howze 57-74)

Page 3: Tom Burns, Research and Instruction Librarian, UMKC Fu Zhuo, Research and Instruction Librarian, UMKC June 8, 2011

International students are familiar with computers and the Internet but have less experience in assessing, retrieving, and evaluating electronic library resources. (Jackson 197-209)

They have different learning styles (Chattoo 349-362)

Using theories of second language acquisition and teaching to library instruction may help. (Conteh-Morgan 191-196)

Librarians are usually sensitive to language barriers but are not always effective in communicating with international students. (Curry 409–420) (Conteh-Morgan 191-196)
