PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2018 3
The breadth of Presby’s Inspired Life ministry stretches wide across
greater Philadelphia, and its impact penetrates deep into the hearts
of those we serve.
Providing exceptional services takes exceptional collaboration between
team members, benefactors of every level and volunteers. Every time
we open a new community, honor outstanding service, complete an
act of service or aesthetically enhance one of our communities, we do
so with an intentional focus on bringing together the best people and
resources to fulfill our mission.
Presby’s Inspired Life is in the business of building community, and the
only way we can do that is TOGETHER. We work harder and smarter
so that, in the end, it’s not what we do but the people we do it for that
shine brightest.
Sincerely,
Judee M. Bavaria President & CEO

Together, we break new ground.Celebrating the opening of two new
Affordable Housing communities
Grand opening celebrations for Cantrell Place in
South Philadelphia and Witherspoon Senior Apartments
in Southwest Philadelphia
PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2018 5PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2018 5
“With $17 million in private and public investments, Presby’s Inspired Life and the Philadelphia Housing Authority have multiplied public housing dollars with the help of our Rental Assistance Demonstration program,” said Joe DeFelice, Regional Administrator of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Mid-Atlantic Division at the Grand Opening celebration of Witherspoon Senior Apartments in December 2018.
In partnership with Presby’s Inspired Life, City Councilman Mark Squilla and former State Representative Bill Keller collaborated with community groups, such as the Seventh Street Community Civic Association and the Whitman Neighborhood Advisory Council, to help bring Cantrell Place to life. Representative Keller identified the land and the opportunity to build on that land. He partnered with Councilman Squilla to devise a strong case for city funding for the project. The Seventh Street Community Civic Association and the Whitman Neighborhood Advisory Council were instrumental in working for and supporting the representative and councilman’s efforts, creating a line of communication between city government and the people of South Philadelphia. Passion and purpose fueled this mission. Without them, the community would have remained a dream unrealized.
“I’m very pleased that there will be Affordable Housing options for seniors in the neighborhood where I spent my childhood,” said Mayor Jim Kenney of Philadelphia. “The grand opening of Cantrell Place will make it that much easier for longtime residents to remain in their neighborhoods, which is a priority of our Housing Action Plan. I’m thankful for the work of Presby’s Inspired Life to provide access to housing for those who need it most.”
A project complete, two new buildings opened, a mission moving onward. Together, we shine!
On three: one, two, three…the ribbon is cut, the applause ensues, and the doors to the community open. New
residents smile, community and political leaders exchange hearty handshakes, benefactors look on in admiration.
In 2018, Presby’s Inspired Life opened two new Affordable Housing communities in Philadelphia. Cantrell Place, located in South Philadelphia, transformed 33 blighted, vacant lots into 61 units of housing, and the 60-unit Witherspoon Senior Apartments, located in Southwest Philadelphia, was an adaptive reuse of a former nursing home. Witherspoon is the fourth community built on Presby’s 58th Street campus, which is often referred to as an oasis in an otherwise struggling neighborhood.
Four years in the making, Witherspoon Senior Apartments was a collective effort of minds, dollars and time. “Communities such as these (Witherspoon and Cantrell) take time to build — both conceptually and physically,” said Vidhi Anderson, Executive Director of Housing and Land Development for Presby’s Inspired Life. “Donors, investors and government entities need to come together on the front end, community and political leaders are needed to push the project forward, and the architects and contractors are tasked with bringing the building to reality.”
I’M THANKFUL FOR THE WORK OF PRESBY’S INSPIRED LIFE TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO HOUSING
FOR THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST.— MAYOR JIM KENNEY OF PHILADELPHIA

52015 Honoring Ch. 6 ABC’s Art of Aging Series
5 2016 Honoree Pat Scott
PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2018 7PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2018 7
In 2008, the Inspired Service Recognition Dinner was established as a platform
to elevate the outstanding work of an individual or organization that shares influence and expertise to successfully impact issues facing older adults.
Among the organizations we have honored are Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, Penn Asian Senior Services and the Channel 6 ABC “Art of Aging” Series. Individuals honored include Pat Scott, resident and philanthropist; Brian Duke, former Secretary of Aging for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; Ukee Washington, CBS 3 news anchor and community leader; Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell; Bill Young, our longest-serving board member; and a host of other exceptional contributors.
Their individual work is exceptional, but it cannot compare to their collective impact on Pennsylvanians — specifically, older adults. Every October, Presby takes an evening to shine a light on the work of these outstanding individuals and organizations and to reinforce, with even greater intensity, our shared ministry of enhancing services and support to older adults — particularly those in greatest need.
As the event has evolved over the last 10 years, so too has the involvement of Presby’s benefactors. McBrick Building Group, TN and Ward and Warfel Construction are among the
event’s most loyal supporters, and year over year, they renew their commitment to Presby’s mission. “We do this to make a difference,” said Noel Weiss of McBrick Building Group.
The event’s volunteers echo their sentiments. The Inspired Service Recognition Dinner is 100 percent volunteer-organized and-executed. “The event has a lot of moving parts and is supported in large part through the effort of volunteers,” said Sharell Shippen, Presby’s Inspired Life’s Director of Faith-Based Ministry, who organizes and deploys the volunteers for the evening. “Every facet of the celebration is thoughtfully conceived. The volunteers help to deliver on that vision.”
The work we do — creating exceptional experiences. The way we do it — together!

NATURE GIVES TO EVERY TIME AND SEASON SOME BEAUTIES OF ITS OWN.
— CHARLES DICKENS
Together, we grow.Nurturing the Renaissance at Rydal and Glorious Gardens projects
PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2018 9PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2018 9
Unique and beautiful in their own settings, Presby’s Rydal Park and Rosemont communities take on a character and life all their own.
Much like the human spirit, this character is made up of a combination of factors — the individuals who live there and the historic settings in which the communities are rooted.
In 2018, Presby’s Inspired Life, in partnership with residents and community leadership at Rydal Park and Rosemont, embarked on campaigns to enhance their respective campuses. The visions for these campaigns were focused on expanding the outdoor grounds and further heightening the aesthetic exterior of the campuses.
The Renaissance at Rydal and Glorious Gardens campaigns were supported by the Office of Philanthropy and Mission Support, but their success grew through the leadership of residents and their passion for seeing their communities shine.
Rosemont residents Amy Williams and Barbara Terplan, the co-chairs of the Glorious Gardens Second Épisode campaign, were instrumental in bringing the project to fruition. “We could not have reached the pinnacle of this project without the leadership and dedication of Barbara and Amy,” said Presby’s Inspired Life Vice President of Philanthropy Lynn Johnson-Porter.
The Glorious Gardens campaigns — both the first and second Épisode — added a new level of beauty and comfort to the personal care patio area
at Rosemont and enhanced the already lush grounds of the Rosemont estate with trees, benches, personally engraved paver stones and a new pergola, among other features.
The Renaissance at Rydal Campaign is an initiative supported by members of the campaign’s Leadership Circle and Rydal Park residents Mona Ballard, Richard Drach, Joan Gotwals, Lorraine Pruitt and Bill Schwarzschild. “The Renaissance project features several objectives — each thoughtfully linked to complement the others,” said Russ Mast, Executive Director of Rydal Park. “The elements of the project will ultimately transform the landscape so that one is able to meander safely and easily across the campus while taking in the new scenery. This new accessibility is made possible by improvements to the stream bed, distinctive pathways and viewing areas.”
Words will almost always fail to convey the intense beauty of nature, and they fall short in describing the synergy that exists when people come together to achieve a common goal. But what is abundantly evident is that, when our residents shine, our communities shine.
See and believe for yourself…

Together, we give.Applauding the impact and growth of our Day of Inspiration
PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2018 11PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2018 11
In South Philadelphia, eager residents
gathered to take part in interactive healthy
cooking and eating demonstrations. In
Delaware County, dozens upon dozens of
flip-flops were collected for needy veterans at
the local Veteran’s Association. And in West
Philadelphia, shopping carts overflowed with
donated food as team members scurried to
find bags for what remained.
The smiling faces and positive vibes across
all of Presby on this day were part of
an inspiring tradition that brings us all
together to shine bright.
This past May, we were proud to host
another Day of Inspiration, a Presby-wide
service initiative that gives back to the local
communities we call home.
Born during Presby’s 60th anniversary year in
2015, the Day of Inspiration has continued to
grow as innovative team members find new
ways to connect to the greater community.
“The Day of Inspiration activities epitomize
our mission and who we are as an
organization,” said Presby President and
CEO Judee M. Bavaria. “Our mission is to
serve our communities to the best of our
abilities, but when we say that, we don’t
just mean inside our walls; we also mean
the neighborhoods that surround us.
“We would not be who we are today without
the support of our neighbors. This day and
these events are our way of saying ‘thank you,’”
said Bavaria. “The efforts of Presby and its team
members to give back during this springtime
tradition have not gone unnoticed.”
Partners such as local police districts,
community centers and food banks have
WE WOULD NOT BE WHO WE
ARE TODAY WITHOUT THE
SUPPORT OF OUR NEIGHBORS.
— JUDEE BAVARIA
joined forces to extend our reach of service
and ensure that people receive what they
need most. Civic leaders and trusted
neighborhood voices have come not only to
support our cause, but also to roll up their
sleeves, utilize their generous spirits and
talents and serve with us.
In 2018, for example, in partnership
with the Ralston Center — an outreach
organization for older adults — team
members and residents helped prep a meal
for those in need in West Philadelphia.
It’s more proof that, no matter who we help
or how we do it, when we give together, we
shine together.
From Delaware County to South Philadelphia, Presby spans the region in the organization’s annual Day of Inspiration.
