Carrick Hill is one of South Australia’s most valuable historic assets, a window into Adelaide’s past that was generously bequeathed to the State in 1983 for the enjoyment of all who reside here.

The marriage of Bill Hayward and Ursula Barr Smith in 1935 united two of the State’s leading families. Bill was a member of the mercantile family who owned John Martin’s, once one of Adelaide’s greatest department stores. His bride, Ursula, was the daughter of an even wealthier family, the Barr Smiths, with extensive pastoral and commercial interests.

The Haywards were a stylish and wealthy Adelaide couple who created this remarkable home at Springfield, where for thirty years from 1940 -1970, they amassed an outstanding art collection and furnished the home from worldwide travels. Carrick Hill is a hidden gem with walls laden with history and grounds that fascinate at every turn.

When we talk of legacies, it must be noted that Bill Hayward created another gem with John Martin’s Christmas pageant in 1933. Bill’s aim in creating this Adelaide institution was to give children joy and happiness in the depths of the Great Depression, and it remains a magical experience to this day.

With the financial help of the South Australian Government, Carrick Hill has been able to continue operating as an outstanding cultural heritage location for thirty years. Now we need to honour the Carrick Hill legacy, take the house and gardens to a new vibrancy and create magic on the Hill.

To extend the visitor experience at Carrick Hill, we need to open longer, provide more opportunity and develop a diverse range of activities and programs. We need to blow the dust off and become more accessible for future generations, and we must breathe new life into the estate.

Carrick Hill is an icon that must be preserved as a destination that brings pleasure for all ages and all interests.

T H E F U T U R E

To retain Carrick Hill’s significant position we need to grow the experience of this site by building on its many attractions, and particularly, its successful café and fine dining achievements. Without taking anything from the glorious home and collections that stand just as the Haywards left them, we must create an even richer experience. Enhancing the gift in this way will keep South Australians returning to this unique home and grounds for the simple enjoyment of it all.

The objective of The Carrick Hill Trust is to ensure the estate holds firmly onto its heritage as it moves forward in time while offering new generations a more vibrant visitor experience.

Nearly five years in the planning, The Trust has, in consultation with stakeholders and government, driven a bold and visionary Master Plan for Carrick Hill that will support its cultural, artistic, social and economic viability for decades to come.

A $2.6m upgrade is proposed for the house that will increase its access and capacity to host a broader range of programs, events and activities. A lift will be installed internally that will allow guests with mobility issues the opportunity to visit all levels of the house for the first time.

The attic, which has never been open to the public for safety reasons, will be converted to The Long Gallery; an event space and new meeting area with a light and spacious gallery. The staff and administration facilities in the non-public areas of the house will be reconfigured to free up additional space.

A new $5m stand-alone visitor centre is proposed for Carrick Hill. Located adjacent to the car park the Pavilion takes in the magnificent views of the house, garden and vista over the city to the coast. Encompassing a restaurant, café, function centre and gift shop, the Pavilion will be the entry point into the grounds for all visitors including those bushwalkers headed to the Wirraparinga Loop Trail and other walks.

Supporting the new Pavilion and house upgrades will be a reconfigured entry from Carrick Hill Drive. A newly planted tree lined avenue will enhance the original Queen’s Way featuring upgraded roadways and improved car parking.

The Australian Museum of Gardening will be a new feature at Carrick Hill and builds on the significant level of visitor interest that the gardens attract. The Museum will house an expanding collection of garden tools, gardening paraphernalia, historic gardening books and resources sourced from donors Australia-wide.

It is thanks to the Hayward’s generous gift to the people of South Australia, that children are able to enjoy the house and gardens today. Seeing children explore the character of the place doubles its magic, showing its value in today’s world.

Adventure abounds at Carrick Hill on the Children’s Storybook Trail where families discover and enjoy the enchantment of the natural world.

By becoming involved in the upgrade you can help ensure the home, gardens and bushland remain for future generations, both young and old.

Friends,

As you have read, we are ‘reimagining’ Carrick Hill. Whilst honouring the past, we are preparing this wonderful legacy to meet the needs of the future.

Visitors may be young people learning about our indigenous past on the Wirraparinga Loop Trail or historic home enthusiasts seeing a house just as the Haywards left it.

They could be art lovers enjoying the renowned collections or an exhibition in the Long Gallery. Visitors will be family picnickers or young couples choosing this house on a hill for a marriage celebration, perhaps using the new Pavilion that looks across Adelaide to the sea.

No matter who our visitors are or where they are from, they will take away great stories of this house with its garden on the hill in the bush. There is so much to share in the collection of experiences that Carrick Hill offers. This must be preserved and developed for generations to come.

Please reimagine and join with us to support the Appeal.
