Dear Readers,

Certainly, we all understand that the beauty and wellness industry in India is at an all-time high, twice as fast as that of the US and European market. This is an outcome of increasing section of affluent and middle-class population considering beauty and wellness as a necessity. It is evident that there is also an increased emphasis on holistic wellbeing with people’s desire to look good and young, which act as key drivers for the industry growth. This validates that there is ample scope for growth in this segment and a noticeable demand of career opportunities in the beauty and wellness sector. However, there are some major challenges faced by the Indian Wellness domain on the skill development front such as inadequate training or lack of standardized training curriculum, fewer job opportunities, etc. As a matter of fact, the Wellness domain in India is still largely unorganized and fragmented, with very limited number of opportunities in the organized space. The shortfall of talent poses extreme threat to the growth and expansion of whole beauty and wellness industry.

Mrs. Vandana Luthra

We seek support from the Ministry and NSDC for easing out the process and making it more aspirational for the youth to take up beauty and wellness courses. Additionally, support from BWSSC members will also fasten the whole process.

However, I appreciate your continued support for working on a number of important initiatives in this area with BWSSC. As we continue our journey to provide industry-level skills training to young people and women alike, let’s take a look at some of the key milestones that we achieved in the past few days.

B&WSSC has crossed boundaries as we recently signed a MoU with CIDESCO, the World Standard for Beauty and Spa Therapy recognized across 60 countries. This association will not only help to set service delivery standards, but also bring about uniformity in our training and help in knowledge exchange between India and other International countries. It will also enable students trained in beauty and wellness in India to seek international employment opportunities.

We are also happy to announce that we have signed another MoU with Yoga Alliance International which is an instrumental step in taking standards created by B&WSSC in Yoga globally.

With more reasons to celebrate this time, I am glad to share that Prior learning Type 4 is formally launched by the Ministry as apprenticeship, which B&WSSC wanted to initiate 3 years back.

This will be a helpful medium to foster youth and cater to more career opportunities in this segment.

In addition to this, we also extend our heartfelt wishes to the winners of the recently concluded India Skill Competition. As they move forward to represent India at the World Skills Competition-2019, to be held at Kazan in Russia, we wish them good luck and success for it. These candidates will go through rigorous training with the best in the industry and I would like to thank all the stakeholders for their support.

While it feels amazing to acknowledge and celebrate milestones, I take this opportunity to urge all the stakeholders to join hands and work together in ways that can help us empower our nation with skilled manpower. Thank you again for helping BWSSC in all its initiatives and I look forward to continue working with you for fulfilling our Skill India Mission. May the onset of divine season bring prosperity for all of you.

Empower Youth! Empower India!

Dear Readers,

The Beauty and Wellness industry in India is booming. It is fast becoming one of the most popular industry sectors attracting many youth (men and women) for employment and entrepreneurship. As there has been a strong demand for skilled manpower in beauty and wellness industry, B&WSSC is gearing up to bring out such workforce through numerous initiatives like job fairs, events, competitions, meetings, etc. I would like to thank all the industry stakeholders for their continuous support and guidance.

We have signed a MoU with CIDESCO where training centres in India through B&WSSC can get their centre approved by CIDESCO as per the standards created by CIDESCO. The students passing out from these centres will be awarded dual certificates both from CIDESCO and B&WSSC . One centre of YLG passed the inspection and is now successfully certified under CIDESCO. I would like to congratulate Ms. Vaijyanthi Bhalachandran and Mr. Rahul Bhalachandran for this achievement. This is just the first step towards creating international standards in Beauty therapy and Spa in India. We have many more centres lined up in the future.

I have also been travelling pan-India to spearhead the cause of skill development and discuss B&WSSC’s initiatives in those respective places. In Uttar Pradesh, B&WSSC has approximately 40 centres where it has trained more than 30,000 candidates and empowered them with a certificate which is recognized by the government of India. However, every year 20 to 25 lakh youth are available to join the labour force provided they are appropriately guided and given facilities to equip them with useful and employable skills. One of the challenges is to launch short duration skill development programmes which are employment oriented and are designed based on the skill development needs of the economy.

Presently, both the Hair Dressing and Beauty Therapy candidates are undergoing training with the industry experts in Mumbai. The candidates are preparing for the Australia skill competition scheduled in April. We earlier held a competition to choose the candidates to represent India at the Competition. Ms. Charmi Sen and Ms. Sampada will be representing the Hair Dressing and Beauty Therapy category, respectively.

I would like to thank the entire team for making B&WSSC such a huge success. Let’s work together to empower our nation with skilled manpower and enable our young ones to realize their full potential.

Empower Youth! Empower India!

1. What According to you are the biggest contributor in the Beauty and Wellness Industry?

Education and technology are the biggest contributors in the Beauty and Wellness industry. These not only helped create right talent for the indsutry but also madee it grow manifold over the years.

2. When I began my journey in this industry, there weren’t many academies. Most salons only offered basic services like threading, waxing, hair cut and cleansing facials.

Introduction of technology completely revolutionised this space. It helped us combine skin science with our age-old beauty methods to create highly advanced treatments. From skin brightening to anti-aging, the skin treatments, today, offer you the best results in real time. The machines have increased the efficacy of the products, which give you a great value for money.

Thanks to the academies, beauty is now seen as a respected profession promising a lucrative future. Beauty as a career option is quite popular among youngsters. These academies also ensure that students understand the science behind the skin, learn latest makeup techniques, and understand how technology and skincare go hand-in-hand. Today, India is seen as an excellent destination to learn about beauty as well as get pampered beautifully.

3. What is that one piece of advice, you would give others about life.

Building trust and never shy away from working hard. One must not see challenges as obstacles in life. Challenges are meant to be overcome, and they offer great life lessons. So do not be scared of them, instead, tackle each challenge one by one while keeping your integrity intact. Being honest and creating trust is the best investment you can make with your team and your clients.it pays off in more ways than you can think off.

4. If you could go back in time to any Era, which would it and why.

I enjoy living in the now. I do not wish to go back in time, or for that matter, go into future. The present is where all the fun and learning is.

5. In what ways you are a leader and in what ways you are a follower.

I am a follower when it comes to following my heart , passion and my values but for the rest I consider myself a visionary. It was my vision to amalgamate the goodness of nature with the state of the art technology more than 3 decades ago , at the time when working in a “parlour ” was considered the worst job and that led to the foundation of Bharti Taneja’s Alps Beauty Group, which transformed the Indian beauty industry. As a Poineer of the beauty industry it was my dream to give Indian women the world class technology and techniques at an affordable price and at their doorstep so that they can feel beautiful from inside as well as outside . Each woman should feel empowered and radiate with confidence. Also, my next vision and dream revolves around empowering women have found new horizons with the establishment of my NGO - Bharti Taneja Foundation. We provide free beauty training and personality development coaching to poor, underprivileged girls so that they can earn for their families and feel financial independence

6. What was the single, most Inspirational event in your life?

The turning point of my life, so to speak, came when I was pregnant and was suffering from 3rd stage osteoporosis and couldn’t even stand or walk. Back then; we had just lost a lot of money. We were going through deep financial crisis and getting three meals a day was also seeming impossible. As a mother, there was a moment, when I panicked for the future of my unborn child. Like every mother, I wished to give the best of comforts and upbringing to my child but the scarcity of money was making me worried and scared. In

Page 12: Together, may we give our youth and women the Together ... · Presently, both the Hair Dressing and Beauty Therapy candidates are undergoing training with the industry experts in

that very moment, it felt like as if God spoke to me through my unborn child. I, somehow, found my strength in this weakest moment of my life and decided to open my salon. I began with a one-room parlour. I couldn’t stand on my feet so I took 2 revolving chairs . One for myself and the other for the clients so that I could move them and cover all the angles while I was giving them services.I attended each and every client with equal diligence and love as my clients were the only reason my unborn would get to eat all the meals. So my most inspirational moment came from the love for my unborn child.

7. If you could abolish once piece of modern technology, what it would be & why.

Modern technology has changed the way we see this world. Things have become simpler and easier. In beauty, modern technology has increased the efficacy of products and treatments by manifold. You can see great results in real time.

8. What is your best childhood memory? Oh, there are so many. It is really difficult to pick one. But

there is this super fun memory of ‘mango-picnic’ at India Gate every year. My father along with his four friends (and their families) took us to India Gate. Our parents use to make wear our chaddis n put us in a tub full of peeled juicy mangoes. We were drenched in mango juices and ate to our hearts content. Played holi with sticky mango pulp and it’s Fragrance wouldn’t go for almost a weak! Imagine four families and all the kids - we were a bunch of monkeys.

9. If you could only keep five possessions, what would they be?

I think possessions or clinging to your possessions bind you as a human somewhere. We are born free and should remain free-spirited. The possessions should be viewed as means to make our life easier and better. You should not allow them to chain you or keep you at one place. Life offers you limitless possibilites - go, grab them.

10. What was one of your most defining moments in life? As I said earlier, the decision to establish my eponymous

brand Bharti Taneja’s Alps Pvt Ltd.

11. Why did you choose that profession? Beauty is not just my profession, it is my passion. It fills with

me joy and content. My passion enables me to make the most out of my abilities as a beauty entrepreneur. At the same time, my brand is a brand that is by the women, for the women. This profession has changed the lives of scores of women. It has given them economic freedom and a social standing.

12. What is your strongest personal quality? My ability to inspire and motivate women to find their

passion, develop a skill and stand on their feet.

13. Your Favourite Quote Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day. Teach a

man to fish, and you have fed him for a lifetime.

14. Social Media you are most found on…. Oh, it is the virtual age. You can follow me on all major

social media platforms - twitter, facebook, youtube.

15. Beauty for you is ……. Skin deep. It has been our motto to give women such

advanced beauty treatments that they feel beautiful inside out.

16. Your Life’s mantra…… Never give up.

17. Your Vision vis a vis Skilling With Bharti Taneja’s Alps Academy, I wish to bridge the gap

between skilled professionals and industry requirements. At the same time, I want to give Indian students a world-class beauty training so that they can conifidently work in any part of the world. My aim is to make India a world leader in beauty industry. We are skilling india since 1988 and have trained scored of students who are working across the globe. With our NGO Bharti Taneja Foundation, we have now extended this platform to underprivileged women so that they can change their destiny and make a successful future in this industry.

SuCCESS STORIES

I, the undersigned

Jayanti Devi, W/O Umesh Kumar Bhagat is Residing at Silli, come from a very poor family. I joined this to this training Class at BIT SKILL TRAINING CENTER,VILL- CHHOTA MURI, sponsored by NBCFDC through B&WSSC, New Delhi., who belongs from a rural family and from childhood faces a lot of problems and due to lack of facility and awareness of education, she didn’t achieve what she wanted in education and didn’t continue her further study.

The atmosphere of the village area didn’t allow to do much and because of weak financial status of the family made me stop the education and after a few years my family got me married. My interest and willingness to do something on my own and to make me independent were still in my mind but I was unable to do anything.

She told the trainer that “when I heard about the skill training in my area, I got very excited and was feeling very much happy that maybe now my dreams come true, of doing something on my own and getting employed somewhere. I told that the happiest thing for me was that the training is free of cost, so, without losing any single moment I took the form and after filling the form, I took admission with a hope of getting skilled and finding a job. “

After completing training I got placed in a parlour where I earned Rupees 500-1000 per day. I am leading life happily. In additional to Beauty parlour work, selling some fancy items including Bridegroom artificial jewellery items helps me get more profit/incentives.

For this, I am very Grateful to Secretary of Bhola Institutional Trust and B&WSSC and NBCFDC for giving this Hair Stylist training and helping me stand up and support my family life.
