OH, THE DEPTHS!

“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!” Paul exclaims in today’s Epistle. Today’s Psalm, too, takes up the triumphant note of joy and thanksgiving. Why? Because in the Gospel, the heavenly Father reveals the mystery of His kingdom to Peter. With Peter, we rejoice that Jesus is the anointed Son promised to David, the one prophesied to build God’s temple and reign over an everlasting kingdom (2 Sam 7). What Jesus calls “my Church” is the kingdom promised to David’s son (see Isaiah 9:1–7). As we hear in today’s First Reading, Isaiah foretold that the keys to David’s kingdom would be given to a new master, who would rule as father to God’s people. Jesus, the root and offspring of David, alone holds the kingdom’s keys (see Revelation 1:18; 3:7; 22:16). In giving those keys to Peter, Jesus fulfills that prophecy, establishing Peter—and all who succeed him—as holy father of His Church. His Church, too, is the new house of God—the spiritual temple founded on the “rock” of Peter, and built up out of the living stones of individual believers (see 1 Peter 2:5). Abraham was called “the rock” from which the children of Israel were hewn (see Isaiah 51:1–2). And Peter becomes the rock from which God raises up new children of God (see Matthew 3:9). The word Jesus uses—“church” (ekklesia in Greek)—was used in the Greek translation of the Old Testament for the “assembly” of God’s children after the Exodus (see Deuteronomy 18:16; 31:30). His Church is the assembly of the firstborn (see Hebrews 12:23; Exodus 4:23–24), established by Jesus’ exodus (see Luke 9:31). Like the Israelites, we are baptized in water, led by the Rock, and fed with spiritual food (see 1 Corinthians 10:1–5). Gathered at His altar, in the presence of angels, we sing His praise and give thanks to His holy name.

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH Christ changed Simon’s name to Peter, “rock,” and established him as the rock upon which his Church would be built. Peter

was thus preeminent among the Twelve Apostles and was given a unique mission. He would guard the authentic teachings of Christ, serve as a focal point of unity, and be a shepherd for the Apostles and the entire Church. This special call of Peter is the origin of the of the Petrine ministry, the papal office, which continues in the Bishop of Rome in an unbroken line to our own day. A bishop’s authority in his diocese is represented by his chair (in Latin, cathedra).

553 Jesus entrusted a specific authority to Peter: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth

shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." The "power of the keys" designates authority to govern the house of God, which is the Church. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, confirmed this mandate after his Resurrection: "Feed my sheep." The power to "bind and loose" connotes the authority to absolve sins, to pronounce doctrinal judgements, and to make disciplinary decisions in the Church. Jesus entrusted this authority to the Church through the ministry of the apostles and in particular through the ministry of Peter, the only one to whom he specifically entrusted the keys of the kingdom.

“¡Oh profundidad de la riqueza, la sabiduría y la ciencia de Dios!”, exclama San Pablo en la epístola de esta semana. También el salmo del domingo toma una triunfante expresión de alegría y gratitud. ¿Porqué? Porque en el Evangelio, el Padre celestial revela el misterio de su reino a Pedro. Con Pedro, nos regocijamos de que Jesús es el hijo ungido prometido a David, de quien se había profetizado que construiría el templo del Señor y reinaría sobre un reino eterno (cf. 2 S 7). Lo que Jesús llama “mi Iglesia” es el reino prometido al hijo de David (cf. Is 9,1–7). Como escuchamos en la primera lectura del domingo, Isaías predijo que las llaves del reino de David les serían entregadas a un nuevo Señor, que gobernaría al pueblo de Dios como un padre. Sólo Jesús, la raíz y descendencia de David, tiene las llaves del reino (cf. Ap 1,18; 3,7; 2,16). Al entregarle esas llaves a Pedro, Jesús cumple esa profecía, estableciendo a Pedro—y a todos sus sucesores—como santo padre de su Iglesia. Su Iglesia es también la nueva casa de Dios: el templo espiritual fundado sobre la “roca” de Pedro y construido con las piedras vivas que somos todos y cada uno de los creyentes. Abraham fue llamado “la roca” de quien los hijos de Israel fueron labrados (cf. Is 51,1–2). Y Pedro viene a ser la roca de la cual Dios hace surgir nuevos hijos de suyos (cf. Mt 3,9). La Palabra que usa Jesús—“iglesia” (ekklesia en griego)—fue usada en la traducción griega del Antiguo Testamento para referirse a la “asamblea” de los hijos de Dios posterior al éxodo (cf. CATECISMO DE LA IGLESIA CATOLICA Cristo cambió el nombre de Simón por el de Pedro, "roca", y lo estableció como la roca sobre la que se edificaría su Iglesia.

Por tanto, Pedro fue preeminente entre los Doce Apóstoles y se le dio una misión única. Proteger las auténticas enseñanzas de Cristo, servir como un punto focal de unidad y ser un pastor de los Apóstoles y de toda la Iglesia. Esta llamada especial de Pedro es el origen del ministerio Petrino, el oficio papal, que continúa en el Obispo de Roma en una línea ininterrumpida hasta nuestros días. El poder de las llaves designa la autoridad para gobernar la casa de Dios, que es la Iglesia. Jesús, "el Buen Pastor" (Jn 10, 11) confirmó este encargo después de su resurrección:"Apacienta mis ovejas" (Jn 21, 15-17). El poder de "atar y desatar" significa la autoridad para absolver los pecados, pronunciar sentencias doctrinales y tomar decisiones disciplinares en la Iglesia. Jesús confió esta autoridad a la Iglesia por el ministerio de los apóstoles (cf. Mt 18, 18) y particularmente por el de Pedro, el único a quien él confió explícitamente las llaves del Reino.

Catholics have a long tradition of engagement in the public square. Sometimes that engagement requires making difficult moral decisions that impact our own lives and those of others. Our conscience can help guide the decisions we make. The Second Vatican Council guides us: “Always summoning [one] to love good and avoid evil, the voice of conscience can when necessary speak to [one’s] heart more specifically: do this, shun that” (Gaudium et Spes 16). However, our conscience doesn’t just come to us when we are born. We must work throughout our lives to form it through prayer, learning, and conversation.

How do I form my conscience?

It takes time to form our consciences so that we can make well-reasoned judgments about particular, real-life situations. The Church teaches that it is important to work continually on conscience formation so we can be prepared to make decisions whenever the opportunity arises. Some specific ideas to form your conscience are:

1) Begin by being open to the truth and what is right.

2) Study Sacred Scripture and the teaching of the Church.

3) Examine the facts and background information about various choices and be discerning in where we gather information.

4) Prayerfully reflect to discern the will of God (Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, no. 18).

Additionally, it is important to consider how

our community of faith can help us form good consciences through some of these steps:

1) Seek the prudent advice and good example of trusted leaders and others to support and enlighten our conscience.

2) Learn about the authoritative teaching of the Church.

3) Pray for the gifts of the Holy Spirit to help us develop our conscience.

4) Regularly partake in an examination of conscience to hear God’s voice in your life.1

Doing the work of forming our consciences can seem daunting. Fortunately, we have many church teachings that can help us in this important task. Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship is an important resource for U.S. Catholics and helps us prayerfully reflect on how we can apply Church teaching in our civic life. “Conscience is not something that allows us to justify doing whatever we want, nor is it a mere "feeling" about what we should or should not do. Rather, conscience is the voice of God resounding in the human heart, revealing the truth to us and calling us to do what is good while shunning what is evil.”2

A divided country. Fights at the dinner table. Political vitriol. What does it mean to love our neighbors in the midst of such a climate?

As Catholics, we have a long tradition of engagement in the political process as a means of putting our faith into

action. We are called to bring the best of ourselves and our faith to the public square—and yet today, many shy

away from such involvement because our national and local conversations are filled with vitriol and harsh

language, often directed at people themselves.

When personal attacks replace honest debate, no one wins. This kind of attack, no matter the reason, only serves to

further divide our communities. As Catholics, we must model a better way. We invite you to join the Civilize It campaign by taking the pledge below as a way to promote civility, love our neighbors, and build community.

Civilize It is about making room in your heart for those with whom you disagree. We are called to recognize that

each one of us is a beloved child of God and to respond in love to that reality. Civilize It is a non-partisan call to

focus on the dignity of all people, even when we disagree, and to put faith in action by bearing witness to a better

way forward.

Take the pledge below as an individual, family, or community. Anyone and everyone can commit together to

honoring human dignity through civil conversation.

1. Civility To recognize the human dignity of those with whom I disagree, treat others with respect, and rise above attacks when directed at me. 2. Clarity To root my political viewpoints in the Gospel and a well formed conscience, which involves prayer, conversation, study and listening. I will stand up for my convictions and speak out when I witness language that disparages others' dignity, while also listening and seeking to understand others’ experiences.

3. Compassion To encounter others with a tone and posture which affirms that I honor the dignity of others and invites others to do the same. I will presume others’ best intentions and listen to their stories with empathy. I will strive to understand before seeking to be understood.

What does it mean to form my conscience? Los católicos tienen una larga tradición de partici-pación en el discurso público. A veces esa partici-pación requiere tomar decisiones morales difíciles que impactan nuestra propia vida y la de los demás. Nuestra conciencia puede ayudarnos a guiar las decisiones que tomamos. El Concilio Vaticano II nos dice: “En los oídos de su corazón”, resuena en uno la voz de su conciencia, “advirtiéndole que debe amar y practicar el bien y que debe evitar el mal: haz esto, evita aquello” (Gaudium et spes 16). Sin embargo, la conciencia no está desarrollada simplemente cuando nacemos. Debemos trabajar toda nuestra vida para formarla con la oración, el estudio y la conversación. ¿Cómo formo mi conciencia? Toma tiempo formar nuestra conciencia para que podamos hacer discernimientos bien razonados sobre situaciones particulares de la vida real. La Iglesia enseña que es importante trabajar continuamente en la formación de la conciencia y así estar preparados para tomar decisiones cuando se presente la oportunidad. Un país dividido. Retórica maligna y dañina en la conversación pública. ¿Qué significa amar a nuestro prójimo en medio de este clima?

Como católicos, tenemos una larga tradición de participación en el proceso político como un medio para poner nuestra fe en acción. Estamos llamados a aportar al discurso público lo mejor de nosotros mismos y de nuestra fe, y, sin embargo, podemos sentirnos renuentes a participar en este proceso porque no es familiar o es intimidante, o lo asociamos con experiencias difíciles en nuestros países de origen. También podemos dudar de participar porque escuchamos muchas cosas odiosas e hirientes, a menudo dirigidas hacia nuestras propias comunidades. ¿Cómo somos llamados a responder como personas de fe? Los invitamos a sumarse a la campaña Civilicémoslo haciendo el siguiente compromiso como una forma de promover la civilidad, el respeto y el amor por nuestro prójimo. Filmed in Europe, this first full-length feature movie on Augustine uses a historic backdrop to tell the true story of one of the Church's most beloved and well-known saints. Its message of sin, conversion, and redemption is as timely today as it was in the fifth century. It is the story of a gifted man who pursues fame and fortune without a moral compass—and the dramatic changes that occur in his soul when challenging events lead him to see the light of truth. It also chronicles the collapse of the Roman world and how Augustine laid the intellectual foundations of what would later become Europe. Alongside Augustine, the stories of two other great saints, Monica and Ambrose, are also portrayed. This movie is not rated. We would recommend Parental Guidance and that parents preview it before watching with children. Bright, young Augustine thinks his mother's religion is foolish-ness. Convinced that his superior intellect will guide him, he sneaks away from home and ventures to a new life in the city of Rome. When he thinks he finally has all he wants, Augustine must choose whom he will serve.
