From Fr. Jairo For the next four Sundays,

until the Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Church turns to the sixth chapter in the Gospel of John for the Sunday Gospel readings. Although the Gospel of John does not contain the institution of the Eucharist as heard in the synoptic Gospel tradition (see Mt 26, Mk 14, and Lk 22), John 6 does contain many Eucharistic overtones and themes that will be developed in the coming Sundays.

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus is facing a hungry crowd of five thousand men (when women and children are included, the number was likely closer to twenty thousand or more). It is in this context that Jesus decides to perform another sign: feed the thousands from five barley loaves and two fish. In describing Jesus’ actions, John employs the Eucharistic imagery and actions present in the synoptic Gospels: Jesus “took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them.” The thousands of men, women, and children ate the fish and loaves until “they had had their fill.” Many of those who witnessed this sign concluded, “This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world.” Just as in the synoptic Gospels, in the Gospel of John, the followers of Jesus came to believe in Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah by the sharing of food and fellowship.

The people who were with Jesus listened intently and reverently, but the teacher realized that as much as they were pleased to receive sustenance for their spirits, they needed nourishment for their bodies as well. So he asked his friends to give them something to eat. They had nothing, but knew of a boy possessing five loaves of bread and a few fish he was willing to share. The little the child had to share was blessed, broken apart, and fed abundantly to five thousand. Suddenly there was so much to pass around that twelve baskets of leftovers were collected, even the leftovers, the broken parts, could be used again as nourishment. When we make judgments about our own broken parts, deeming them as weaknesses too soft to be shared, perhaps we do not realize that our broken parts often help others to open themselves. We come together on Sundays to share, to commune, and to share in a Communion of the body of Christ. If hosts were scarce, no doubt, everything would be done to break apart what was available into minute pieces so everyone could partake. If we are willing to share the consecrated body of Christ, shouldn’t we be willing to share the consecrated-through-baptism body of Christ which is within us?

We become open on Sundays by sharing in

the brokenness of Jesus and the resulting resurrection of that brokenness. We come to share our belief in the difference that presence makes in our lives. Where we once saw ourselves shattered, now something of value appears. The fragments needed for change to occur are already present. Miracles are within you as Jesus might have said, when sharing yourselves with one another and in breaking yourselves apart, just as you shared the bread, you share yourselves. The pieces are already there waiting for you to change them, share them, and potentially transform them into the miracle you seek. Sharing in the eucharistic meal is one way we come together as “one body” and under “one Spirit.” The Eucharist calls us and challenges us, as a community of the faithful, to live a life with humility, gentleness, patience, and love.

Saint Martha. Thursday is the memorial

of St. Martha. In some ways she is the counterpart to Peter, always doing and saying the wrong thing, but her faithfulness was never denied. Just as her sister Mary was attentive to the Lord’s words, Martha was attentive to his needs, and she clearly believed Jesus was the Son of God.

Saint Ignatius.

Saturday is the memorial of St. Ignatius

of Loyola, who founded the Jesuit order. He developed a thirty-day

spiritual exercise, the Examen (examination of conscience), and the

idea of spiritual guides or directors.

The Youth Retreat begins Sunday July 25th &

continues through Thursday July 29th from 6:30-9pm at St. Mary’s Social Hall. It is mandatory for CFF Level 9/Confirmation students. If anyone wants to

attend but has not registered… a parent should bring them so they can “register” their child.

We encourage you to keep your children in the CFF program and coming to classes. If you do not continue to enroll them, then want to get them enrolled when it’s time for Confirmation, they will have to “make up” the years they missed. It is also very important to register early for class placement. Students should be registered no later than August 6th. For students doing Catch-Up… Please, continue

working in your books at home this summer. When you complete a unit including the unit review, come to the CFF office Mondays – Fridays, 8am-11am & 1

– 4pm to test on that unit. Students should complete

catch-up work by August 11th.
