GOOD afternoon to everyone attending today’s match at Love Lane, including the players, officials and sup-porters from East Cowes Vics and the match officials.
So it’s back to the bread and butter of the league today with only our second Wessex Division 1 fixture of the season.
That is due to the relatively small size of our league and the success we have had in the FA competitions. Although we would like to have more league games under our belts we love the cup successes too so we won’t mind a few more Saturday’s tied up with cup matches in the weeks to come.
It has been interesting to see the reaction to the defeat in our last home game against Horndean in the FA Cup. It was a result which hit everyone at the club hard, and in many respects it shook people a lot more than I thought it would.
Even though we have won all of our other matches this season, there was a lot of soul searching following the defeat to our local rivals.
I think the manner of the defeat really hit the players and football management for six. Compared with other performances so far this season we just didn’t turn up and we didn’t do ourselves justice in front of a sizeable home crowd who were keen to see us play well.
However, we have put that game to bed in the best possible way by picking up two victories from tough games on the road this week – at Welton in the FA Vase last Saturday and at East Cowes in the Hamp-shire Senior Cup on Tuesday night.
It shows the desire to achieve this season burns strongly within our squad and everyone will be keen to put on another good display this afternoon.

MANAGER’S notes
HELLO and welcome everyone to Love Lane for another afternoon of football – and what is a rare league game for us.
Welcome to East Cowes Vics for our second fixture against them in the same week.
The Hampshire Senior Cup game on Tuesday night on the Isle of Wight was a tight affair and on reflection the sending off of the Vics player had a real affect on the outcome of the game.
We had to wait until extra time to get our first goal and East Cowes Vics equalised almost straight away.
But we made sure we got through to the next round with practically the last kick of the game.
We wish all the players, staff and supporters making the trip over from the island all the very best for today here at Love Lane.
This game will be only our sec-ond league fixture of the season, even though it is mid-Septem-ber, so we are already playing catch up.
We have another Saturday cup fixture next weekend when we travel to Fawley in the FA Vase, so it is going to be a few weeks yet before we get a run of league matches going.
East Cowes Vics are al-ways a tough team to play against, but these fixtures
are ones we must be looking to win if we are seriously going to establish ourselves in this division.
After having a few players out in midweek, we welcome back a number of
players for today and hope that we can continue
with our early sea-son form.
Sus
We face East Cowes Vics for second time in a week – this time in the league...

Petersfield Town 1 Horndean 2
PETERSFIELD may have been red hot when they beat the Wessex League champions in the last round of the FA Cup but they were little more than a damp squib in the East Hampshire derby.
Those who saw their 4-3 win over Blackfield and Langley must have been shocked at how poor the Rams were in comparison against Horndean.
The two games were chalk and cheese as far as Petersfield were con-cerned and they were left hurting hard after this defeat.
But fair play to Horndean - they took their chances when they came along in what was a nervy but ultimately disap-pointing game in terms of excitement and flowing football.
It could have been different though as although Petersfield were not firing on
all cylinders, Robbie Tambling had two efforts blocked early on which looked certain goals.
The visitors took the lead after 36 min-utes when Petersfield’s normally reliable defence failed to deal with a long ball down the middle.
Tom Woodward nipped in to take the ball before hitting a low shot under Matt Shortt.
The Deans doubled their lead on 69 minutes when another long ball was not dealt with by the home side and Lenny Burney got in behind the defence before firing the ball home into the net.
Tambling’s chip from the edge of the box gave Petersfield a lifeline with 11 minutes to go and they almost forced a replay with three minutes left.
Deans keeper Chris Clarke produced a world class save to somehow keep out a header from point blank range.
Rams left feeling pretty low after dismal day in FA Cup

Welton Rovers 0 Petersfield Town 2
PETERSFIELD Town put their FA Cup disappointment behind them with victory in their FA Vase trip to Somerset last Saturday.
The Rams eased past their Western League Division 1 hosts as they found their form again after the dismal display against Horndean on the previous week-end.
Welton’s long ball game was largely snuffed out by the Rams’ defence and keeper Paul Williamson had a quiet after-noon with little to do.
The home side’s best chance of the game was the first shot of the day after three minutes when a ball played down the right found Ryan Gay in space behind the Petersfield defence but he fired high and wide of the target.
On 19 minutes Robbie Tambling was put clear of the defence and he shot past the keeper only to see the ball bounce back off the far post.
Late in the first half Steve Cammack got clear of the home defence, took the ball around the keeper but his shot was cleared off the line.
Petersfield took the lead on 59 min-utes when Joe Richardson picked up the ball on the left.
His curling cross was missed by ev-eryone and the ball found the far corner.
The Rams made sure of victory on 75 minutes when Tambling was pulled down in the box for a clear penalty.
Sam Martin sent the keeper the wrong way with his spot kick.
The only sour note of the day was Alex Ward picking up his second yellow card of the match in injury time.
Rams back to winning ways with victory in West Country

RAMS news round-up
THE DRAW has been made for the third round of the Wessex League Cup.
Petersfield’s reward for beating Totton and Eling 4-1 in the second round is a trip
to another Premier Division club in the third round.
The Rams will travel to either Lyming-ton Town or Brockenhurst.
It’s like he was never away...
Away trip awaits Rams in League Cup
HE LEFT on the eve of the new season but just weeks later he has re-turned back to the club where he has made plenty of headlines in recent seasons.
Callum Coker, who has been Pe-tersfield’s top goalscorer for the last two seasons, is back at Love Lane following a short spell at Wessex Premier Division side, Downton.
On his return to Love Lane, the striker came off the bench in last Sat-urday’s FA Vase win at Welton Rov-ers and he started in the Hampshire Senior Cup tie at East Cowes Vics on Tuesday night.
Rams manager Ian Saunders said he was delighted to get the goal machine of the last few seasons back involved with his new-look side.
In seven league starts for Down-ton, Coker netted two goals in his spell in the Premier Division.
AFTER last Saturday’s victory in Somer-set in the FA Vase first qualifying round, the second qualifying round brings another away trip but a lot closer to home this time.
The reward for victory at Welton Rov-ers is a trip across Hampshire to Fawley next Saturday. Kick-off at Long Lane is at 3pm.
The chance of revenge for losing to Horndean in the FA Cup has disappeared
in the Hampshire Senior Cup.While Petersfield kept up their side of
the draw by beating East Cowes Vics on Tuesday night, the Deans lost at home to Fleet Spurs.
So it will be Fleet Spurs who will be the visitors to Love Lane on October 8.
Petersfield await news of their first opponents in the Portsmouth Senior Cup this season after receiving a bye in the first round of the competition.
Another away day in the FA Vase

TODAY’S visitors
EAST Cowes Victoria Athletic Football Club was formed in 1885.
The name incidentally is the longest registered with the English FA. The Victoria part derives from the fact that the ground in Beatrice Avenue is part of the crown estate and in the area owned by Osbourne House, the home of Queen Victoria.
The Vics were founder members of the Isle of Wight FA and played on the Island for their first 30 years.
In 1889 the Isle of Wight FA introduced cup competitions, including the Isle of Wight Senior Gold Cup. This trophy is reported to be the most valuable football trophy in the world being made of solid gold.
The only drawback is that if you win the Gold Cup you can’t keep it. Most clubs insure it for the annual presentation night and return it to the bank.
In 1947 The Vics joined Division 3 of the Hampshire League and spent nine seasons in Division 3, 18 in Division 2 and 12 in Division 1.
One of the most important years in the Vics’ long history was 1968 when the club amalgamated with an East Cowes Junior side, East Cowes Athletic, thus becoming the East Cowes Victoria Athletic.
Without doubt the Vics’ most suc-cessful period was under the guidance of Graham Daish, who built a squad of all Island players good enough to win the Hampshire League Division 1 champi-onship twice, the first time remaining unbeaten all season.
They also won the Isle of Wight Gold Cup seven times during this period.
The hard work of the committee enabled the club to progress into the
Wessex League for the start of the 1987-88 season.
Although the club lost key players before the start of the season, they still managed to finish in eighth place and they won the Wessex League Cup by beating Romsey Town 2-0 in the final.
Following relegation, the club formed a new committee and finished fourth in the Hampshire League’s Premier Division.
In 2001-02 the Vics had their best sea-son in recent years, when they narrowly missed out on promotion to the Wessex League, finishing runners-up to Alton Town.
But they did win the Hampshire Tro-phyman Cup, beating Liss Athletic 1-0.
In Season 2003-04 Vics returned to the Wessex League after the Football Association’s restructuring of the leagues.

EVERY programme this season will fea-ture a story from the files of the Peters-field Post – Petersfield Town FC’s official media partner.
Today we go back to June 9, 1993, and a report on the former England and Tottenham Hotspur player who took over as manager of the club.
The report said that Gary Stevens, who also had a spell with Pompey during his playing career, will be the man to manage Petersfield as a new era starts for the club.
He signed a two-year contract and was named as first team manager and commercial manager.
Stevens told the Post: “The job at Petersfield is a great challenge. I don’t know much of the club’s history but Peter told me about his ideas and hopes for the club and I’m excited by it.”
Stevens was appointed by Petersfield chairman Peter De-Sisto, who was also trying to persuade ex-Arsenal midfielder Brian McDermott and ex-Southampton and Exeter striker Steve Neville to play for the club.
The excitement surrounding the ap-pointment of Gary Stevens saw Peters-field achieve another first, according to the Post that week – a mention on Ceefax.
