This beatitude is one of the most profound, pointed, and penetrating proclamations Jesus ever uttered. “Blessed are the pure in heart”; that is what Christianity is all about. Regardless of faithfulness to the forms of religion, the heart must be right in God’s sight. The Pharisees of Jesus’ day were so concerned about the externals of religion that they forgot the “weightier matters of the law” (Matt. 23:23). The oth-er extreme is that “it doesn’t matter about obedience as long as the heart is right.” King Saul found that to be a false conclusion (1 Sam. 15:22-23). Matthew 5:8: “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” Purity of Heart. Jesus is not referring to sinless perfection. John tells us, in 1 John 1:8, 10, that if we say that we have no sin then we deceive ourselves and make God a liar. Jesus is not saying that we are to never have an evil thought. Paul writes in Galatians 5:17 that the flesh wars against the spirit, which results in us doing things that we shouldn’t. Jesus is referring a singleness of heart (Matt. 6:22). This is a heart that is focused on things that are pure (Phil. 4:8). If we are concentrating on things that are pure, then we will not leave room for the evil! Power of a pure heart. If I am pure of heart, then I will see God. When Christ returns to judge the world and to give the righteous their reward, I will see God as He is (1 John 3:1-3)! This shows me that there is a responsibility on my part. I am not going to see God if I have not put to death the things that cause me to be impure (Col. 3:5-7)! If anyone thinks that they can live any way that they choose and God is still going to save them, then they need to read this passage again. Do you want to see God? Then let’s be sure that we are pure of heart!

SYMPATHY

Joyce Kirby passed away last Tuesday night after having a stroke. Our deepest love and sympathy is extended to Larry, Eli, Layla, Jackie, and the entire family. The funeral was held yes-terday.
