The history of the Individual clubs within Toastmasters International - District 69

These histories are arranged alphabetic order. Similar to the District Directory

These club records have been compiled form hand written records, original documents (if

available) and sourced from various information supplied by club members.

Sincere thanks to all those members who have corrected the information and added to the histories.

NOTE

A starting point for the electronic record is Toastmasters International listing of clubs as at 1st July 2013.

There are many clubs that have been suspended within the boundaries of District 69 since 1958 when

Australia’s 2nd club, Toowoomba Toastmasters, was chartered. There is an unknown number of proposed

clubs that never proceeded to obtain a formal charter for whatever reason.

Charter Dinner/Presentation 29th July at Mt Coot-tha Kiosk

The club was chartered in 1967 and was an off-shoot of Brisbane Central Toastmasters Club which had

become overcrowded. Brisbane Central Toastmistress Club and Advance held a joint Charter Dinner at Mt.

Coot-tha Kiosk on 29th July 1967. The presidents of the two clubs were Rhona O'Donovan and Mervyn

Sugars.

The members who joined the new club were those who had completed all the steps in the BASIC Trainer and

a number who were well advanced in it.

Whereas Central Club met weekly at the Canberra Hotel, Advance met fortnightly. A drive for new

members initially met with a slow response and for a number of months this was a small club. With time we

attained a membership of a respectable number.

Members of the new club acknowledged their responsibility to Central Brisbane Club by returning to act as

master evaluator. This custom continued for some twelve months.

Foundation members included:

Mervyn Sugars Gordon O' Connor (initiator of the new club)

Ken Copeland Harry Mills

Peter Steinitz Haydn Edwards Sim Goyne

Reuben Clark John Ralph Don Braithwaite

Some of these attended Advance's 20th anniversary dinner in 1987.

Former member Ron Redman, former Police Commissioner attended the anniversary function.

THE FOUNDING OF A TOASTMASTERS CLUB

It would be an interesting – though impossible – exercise to calculate just

how many people have passed through Adventurers Toastmasters in the

forty years of its existence. I propose to look at some of these people –

and events – all of whom in their time, constituted ‘the Club’.

JOANNA VAN DER MARK (ATM)

HOW DID OUR CLUB BEGIN?

1972. The ADVENTURERS Club, then at Byres Street, Newstead.

One of its members – Gerry Moedt, spoke to us about Toastmasters, of which he was a member. A

Toastmasters Club at Adventurers? Sounded like a great idea.

Who were those Adventurers from which Adventurers Toastmasters was born? It was active from 1968 until

the early eighties, sporting in its heyday a membership of around 500 people. It offered its members social

Page 15: Toastmasters International - District 69 Individual Club ... · Sponsoring Club xxx # xxx Club Mentors Mark Snow DTM & David Pedler DTM Outstanding Features of the Club ... 2016-17

nights, training courses such as scuba diving and camping week-ends to beach or bush. (In today’s climate of

strict regulations and ‘duty of care’ such a club could never have come into being). However, its members did

enjoy themselves. Run by Bill Atkinson and Win Henderson, this thriving organization offered something to

nearly everyone. A great launching pad for a Toastmasters Club.

ADVENTURERS CHARTERS:

Our meetings commenced in February 1972 and at first were held under the house of President Gerry Moedt

at 15 Wallaby Street, Toombul.

Enthusiasm was such that the Club was able to charter – with 32 members – in August, 1972. This rapid birth

was due in no small part to the determination and forceful personality of our first president, who set high

standards of achievement for all.

The Charter Party at the Homestead Hotel was attended by 300 guests. It brought some nervous moments for

organizer Don Chapman. Only a handful of people had registered – and with everything booked would there

be a financial disaster? No! On the dot they flocked in, eager to join the fun. Such were our carefree early

days!

A CLUB WITHIN A CLUB:

In September 1972 the Club transferred to the premises of the Adventurers Club,

located at Annie Street, Kangaroo Point, (later the Brisbane Jazz Club). This was to be our home for the next

two years.

Most of our Charter members were also actively involved with the Adventurers Club. Charter members such as

Don Chapman, Peter Bremner, Andi King Koi and Ron Wall often organized the weekend camping trips (and came

to Toastmasters on Mondays!) Bill Atkinson and Win Henderson also joined. This common Adventurers Club

membership did much to augment the bond between early members.

Adventurers Toastmasters was in a position not dissimilar to that of a company-sponsored club – grafted onto

the Adventurers Club, it flourished.

EARLY DAYS AT OUR CLUB;

The Adventurers Toastmasters which I joined in September 1972 was vastly different from today’s

Club. Things were very informal; refreshments consisted of wine and cheese – to hand throughout

the meeting. Tables were set out horseshoe-wise.

Except for President Gerry, all of us were completely inexperienced. Initially, I was under the impression that

Toastmasters had but one speech – ‘The Icebreaker’. Then suddenly, people started doing Project 2 –

‘Establish Your Purpose’.

General Evaluators came to us from established clubs. This was normal practice with newly chartered clubs.

One was Lionel Fifield, a future (1976) District Governor and founder of the Brisbane Relaxation Centre. He

commended our enthusiasm, but hinted that a little more formality might not go astray.

Our first Change-over Dinner, at the Spanish Room of the (since-demolished) National Hotel was attended by

40. Peter Bremner was the incoming President. Five members were heading off on an Overland-to- London

trip sponsored by Adventurers.

A Club Newsletter - Champagne Bubbles, with Editor Joanna, appeared.

Reliable sources had it that one high in the “Queensland Toastmaster” hierarchy forecast a life expectancy of

about six months for this brash new club which even admitted – heresy most dire – women.

INFILTRATION BY THE FAIRER GENDER:

The position of women In Toastmasters in the early seventies was still ambiguous. Officially, intending

members had to be over 18, of good character – and male. In early 1973 we discovered that when a club was

sponsored by an organization open to both genders, the resulting Toastmasters Club had to be open to ALL

members.

We were thus officially registered as a mixed club, and the earlier practice of submitting women’s

applications under masculinised names ceased. Sleight of hand perpetrated in 1972 included Caroline’s

application naming her ‘Carlos’, Lorely became ‘Lorey’ and Joanna was subjected to the outrage of ‘Joh’ (a

name prominent in state politics). Even in mixed clubs however, women could NOT be elected President.

Nor could they take part in speech contests above club level – as women could not compete at Area Contests.

The situation was fast approaching the absurd because of the ever-increasing number of women involved.

Toastmasters International remedied this situation in late 1973. This required an amendment to the

Constitution of Toastmasters. Even after this change, we still took some by surprise - one visitor from an all-

male club saw fit to compliment Adventurers on its many ‘lady-visitors’. He looked quite taken aback when it

was pointed out that the ladies were (legal) members. At that stage in Brisbane, only Adventurers, DC Club

and Endeavour admitted women.

ANOTHER FIRST – A WOMAN AS PRESIDENT:

The Change-over Dinner at Mayne Ten Pin Bowling Club in December 1973

took the format of a Hawaiian Night. A 2-course meal including wine, for $3 a head.

Our third President was Lorely Wells (later Hodges). According to our information, this was the first time

ever a woman was elected to lead a Toastmasters Club. On the 4th April 1974, Carline Walne (Hamilton)

became the first woman to represent the club at an Area Main Speech Contest – she ran third.

A NEW HOME - THE EMBASSY; (1974 to 1995)

The club was now approaching its second birthday. Happy though our time with the Adventurers had been,

the consensus was that the time had come to take an independent position. Popular though the wine-and-

cheese nights were, we now sought to attract members from a strata broader than any one club. This

required a neutral venue.

A number of options were explored, leading to the selection of the Embassy Hotel and a more formal

Dinner-meeting setting. Regretfully, this meant the complete severance of our link with the Adventurers –

only the name remained. Advertising on their premises and in their magazine however, had to cease.

The first meeting in our new venue was the second Charter Anniversary on 19/8/1974.

We had embarked on a new direction – and ahead lay some remarkable achievements.

HAPPY EARLY DAYS;

We were a young club in the mid-seventies. Weddings – some between members, were not infrequent.

Kevin and Carol, Caroline and Chris, Don and Robyn

Peter and Louise, Chris and Jenny…and later newsletters announced the arrival of

Page 17: Toastmasters International - District 69 Individual Club ... · Sponsoring Club xxx # xxx Club Mentors Mark Snow DTM & David Pedler DTM Outstanding Features of the Club ... 2016-17

small bundles of joy….

Our social calendar was also full: a pig-roast at Lorely’s attracted seventy people, a ‘bring a friend night’ was

well attended, with a ‘Wine and Cheese’ night at Ron’s attracting eighty. A ‘Bier, Brot & Wein’ also proved

popular.

Members were reminded to pay their semi-annual dues - $6. Expensive then!

Members were encouraged to visit other clubs, and visitors came to us from clubs – some still here, some

long-gone – Brisbane Central, Endeavour, MDI, Boomerang,

Legal and General…Most of these clubs were then all-male.

ROUND-UP AT ROCKY – CONVENTION - May 1975;

A chartered plane flew to Rockhampton with a load of Toastmasters – including

thirteen Adventurers. A memorable weekend. A reception team clad in yellow-fringed jackets and cowboy

style hats. The Civic welcome by the Mayor – oops, several of us followed one who knew the way – ending

up not at City Hall, but the Post Office.

The newly-built Leichhardt hotel – not quite completed. One suite booked by Adventurers could be reached

only through an unlit passage littered with building paraphernalia…it became known as the ‘Bats Cave’ and

was the venue for the late-night parties…who needed sleep?

Practical jokes – on Saturday night some of our number decided on a quiet game of cards. This ultra-modern

hotel had neat little card rooms – also used as lifts.

Card-tables and chairs were soon found – and the players swung into action. Concentration was somewhat

impeded by people who insisted on opening and shutting doors – on different floors. Management finally

emerged and suggested a card venue more conventional – although players were requested to hold their

position for a photo…

There was some serious stuff – Adventurers won the Travel Gavel for most members attending, and was

second in the Distinguished Club Plan. Adventurer Val ran second in the Humorous Speech Contest and

Lorely was Outstanding Area Governor…the following year she was appointed Divisional Lieutenant

Governor.

CONVENTION 77 – HOST CLUB ADVENTURERS

Held at Lennon’s Plaza Hotel 13/14/15 May 1977. This was also a REGIONAL Conference

– comprising Districts 69, 70, 72, 73.

The Club was now in its 5th year – and its strength and maturity is indicated by the decision

to host District (and Regional) Conference. Our tender for this event had been accepted at

the 1976 Convention – and it had been ‘Action Stations’ ever since.

Convention Coordinator President Kevin Blunt had in 1976 already organized sub-

committees – each with a specific task – finance, hospitality and promotion, thus giving the

incoming 1977 Committee a sound basis to work on. Don Chapman, the incoming

President, was Convention Chairman.

Page 18: Toastmasters International - District 69 Individual Club ... · Sponsoring Club xxx # xxx Club Mentors Mark Snow DTM & David Pedler DTM Outstanding Features of the Club ... 2016-17

Costing was $55 for the package with a $10 Early Bird discount. Registrations came in fast

and furious unlike previous Conventions, Adventurers made a modest profit. The inclusion

of Alka-seltzer in the Sample Bags drew some comment! New was the use of name tags

colour-coded to package taken. Sore hands for Dymo-operator Jock Elliott! Meals were

magnificent, with a special mention of the ‘Bombe Vesuvius’ at the District Governor’s

Banquet.

Adventurers – busy or not, took part in all Speech contests, Ted Mathew running third in

the International, and Bob Bimrose second in Impromptu. Some excitement preceded the

Inter-district Contest following the banquet – the New Zealand winner arriving with just

minutes to spare – a near-victim of a traffic-controllers strike.

Adventurers were now recognized as one of the strongest clubs in District – a position we

were to hold for many years. However, it also was a time when a number of our

foundation members decided to turn to pastures anew, and new members joined us. Still,

the essential quality of the club and its tradition of high achievement remained.

A DECADE OF ACHIEVEMENT;

1977: Following Convention, a period of comparative quiet set in. Caroline Walne and Joanna van der

Mark became the first Adventurers to achieve CTM status – on the original fifteen speech manual.

1978: An active year. A pool-side BBQ at Ron’s, a demonstration meeting at Kangaroo Point Adventurers.

The Change-over Dinner featured a mock trial on street-marches.

1980: Past President Don Chapman won the Main Speech Contest at Townsville – subject the Original

Anzacs. Jo van Zuylen was appointed District Secretary for 1980/1

1981: Margaret Brennan appointed District Secretary 1981/82.

1982: Joanna van der Mark became the Club’s first ATM (Able Toastmaster) then the second highest honour

in TM, followed By Barbara Fritz (19985) and Bob Bimrose (1986).

1983: Membership reached an all-time high of forty-plus. Many members attended District Convention at

Cherribah resort. Jock Elliott won Humorous.

October saw a delightful social event: the ‘Serendipity Playhouse’ organised by Jock – at the Schonell

Theatre, St. Lucia University. Several clubs participated, presenting mime, melodramas, jokes and skits,

followed by a Chicken and champagne supper, ($9)!

1985: In April, most of the club ‘took off’ for another weekend at Cherribah. We tried out the golf course.

Indulged in some rock climbing and took a trip on the tractor to a BBQ.

CONVENTION 87 – HOST CLUB ADVENTURERS –

Held at Brisbane City Travelodge (Transit Centre) 1st-4th May 1987

Little doubt as to immediate priorities that existed in the minds of the 1987 Executive – coming up

after a ten-year interval, another Convention to plan! A package offering ‘Early Bird’ Registration

at $89 ($99 for the late birds).

‘Toastmasters is all about Training’ was the theme for our second

Convention. Posters of trains were displayed throughout the venue, with a

Page 19: Toastmasters International - District 69 Individual Club ... · Sponsoring Club xxx # xxx Club Mentors Mark Snow DTM & David Pedler DTM Outstanding Features of the Club ... 2016-17

further slogan – Presentation, Polish, Performance’. The ‘training’ theme

was taken into the programme – Saturday night dinner was in the

Stradbroke Dining Car, followed by ‘The Railway Fettlers Ball’.

‘Presentation, Polish, Performance’. The opening Ceremony, Saturday lunchtime, was performed by Past

District Governor Russ Walkington (ATM). A busy weekend for Club Members, most of whom stayed

overnight in the Hotel. Something different – a car rally on Monday to Bardon Professional Centre for a

Spit-roast BBQ finish.

THIS CONVENTION WAS ANOTHER MAJOR SUCCESS FOR ADVENTURERS.

POST-CONVENTION there was – as had happened ten years earlier, a major decline in active membership.

A number of long-established members moved on, signaling the end of many years when membership

stood at 30-plus. At one stage membership dropped below Charter strength (20). Succeeding Executives

worked hard to reverse this trend, and by 1991 the Club was starting to rebuild membership.

1988: Charter member Bob Bimrose became Adventurer’s first DTM.

1989: Jock Elliott won the International Speech Contest and became runner-up at Interdistrict, at Brisbane

Travelodge.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS OF THE NINETIES;

1990; Jock Elliott won District International at Maryborough. As one of nine non-American District

winners, he was placed first in the ‘speak-off’ at World Convention.

Our Charter Anniversary offered something different: A Mock Wedding between Jason N’erdowell and

Pittypat Busybody. A night filled with laughter.

1991: The Club hosted a very successful Division Conference at Ridge Hotel.

1992: Adventurers celebrated its TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY with a Dinner-dance at Ridge Hotel. Most

of our Past Presidents were there. My first Club History - ‘Yesteryears Adventurers 1972 – 1991’ was

presented to attendees. 1994: Jock Elliott representing Australia was placed

third at the International Speech Contest at the 62nd TM International Convention. A great achievement.

1995: After more than twenty years at the Embassy Hotel changes by Management resulted in our

upstairs venue no longer being available. We looked around and moved temporarily to the Masonic Centre

in Ann Street and the Stock Exchange Hotel.

1997: Our SILVER ANNIVERSARY (25 years) was held at the Hotel Grand Chancellor on 1st September

1997. Several past members and District Visitors attended.

1999: Heather Rhead was elected District Governor of District 69 AND we moved to a new venue, the Irish

Club, where we remain as at present.

THE PAST TEN YEARS: 2002: Adventurers celebrated its 30th Anniversary with another big night. A three-course dinner in the

Harp Room at the Irish Club. Charter Member Bob Bimrose revisited the Club’s history. Many past

members and representatives from District attended. In October, the Club also hosted a Successful Area

Conference.

Page 20: Toastmasters International - District 69 Individual Club ... · Sponsoring Club xxx # xxx Club Mentors Mark Snow DTM & David Pedler DTM Outstanding Features of the Club ... 2016-17

These highlights were followed by a period when membership and attendances were low, not infrequently

in the single digits. However, our ‘core’ of committed members managed to once again hold the fort and

we are still here. 2006 Monday 20th

February: Our 800th Meeting. Our group of 20 again included some past members. The year was further

enlivened by a joint meeting with Brisbane Central.

2007: Our 35th Anniversary on Monday 20th August attracted 14 members. We celebrated with coffee and

a birthday cake. 1972 member Joanna van der Mark spoke on our past!

2009: In late 2008 we had been delighted to welcome a number of visitors from another Toastmaster club:

City Business. Their circumstances were less than ideal: their venue had been closed down and they were

no longer numerically strong. Our combined meetings went well. A few months later – having decided that

City Business was no longer viable – we were very happy to sign up 6/8 experienced members and our Club

flourished once again.

2010: On Monday 19th October we celebrated our 900th meeting with a Dinner Meeting. Past members

including Caroline Walne, Val Ingham, Jo van Zuylen and Peter Krause relived some of their ‘memories’ in a

special segment.

2011: The 20th of August was a red-letter day for District 69 AND Adventurers as long-standing member

Jock Elliott competing at the 80th International Convention in Las Vegas, achieved TM’s highest speaking

accolade: the Toastmasters World Champion-ship of Public Speaking with a speech entitled ‘Just so Lucky’.

Six times Jock attempted this – his final reward was sweet indeed.

FORTY YEARS – AUGUST 2012

Our Fortieth Anniversary was celebrated on Monday the 17th September with a

Dinner-Meeting in the Harp Room of the Irish Club. A truly memorable night.

Present were our members and their partners, an impressive array of past members and Past Presidents,

also the District Governor and other representatives of District and other Clubs.

ONWARD TO FIFTY!

Much has changed in the forty years since I joined. During the 1970’s we had two 15-project Manuals – Basic

and Advanced. Club secretaries plied their trade with hard-cover minute books and folders for the

paperwork…not a computer in sight. EVP’s mailed out programmes – typed on a manual typewriter - for

every meeting and if the matter was urgent we picked up a telephone (yes landlines). Finances were

forwarded to Headquarters by International Bank Draft. At each meeting a vote was taken for the Best

Speaker Awards for the night. Originally we had Clubs, Areas and Districts. District 69 was formed in 1971.

Divisions did not form until much later. Certainly easier to get to District level in competitions then!

Toastmasters were not just about attending meetings. Visiting other clubs was seen as a good way

of broadening our experience, and we frequently had visitors to our club. I remember BBQs at

members’ places, an afternoon around the swimming Pool of St. Lucia Uni, the occasional theatre

or movie – ‘Red October’ followed by a Champagne and Chicken supper. Insurance and ‘duty of

care’ considerations would today make such activities more difficult to organize. District

Conventions were a highlight of the year; we might get half of the club or better attending. The one

at Cherribah was rudely interrupted by the drought-breaking rains of 1983. We were advised to

leave at once or have an indefinite stay. Contests fortunately had just finished. Buses materialised

out of nowhere. I still remember the magnificent spectacle of the waterfalls pouring down

Cunningham’s Gap as the radio spoke of blocked roads and over-flowing dams. Quite an

adventure! A lovely venue, so in 1985 we decided on a social weekend there – the one and only

time in my life I got onto a golf-course. Activities such of these provided valuable bonding

amongst members – and great memories to look back on.

Page 21: Toastmasters International - District 69 Individual Club ... · Sponsoring Club xxx # xxx Club Mentors Mark Snow DTM & David Pedler DTM Outstanding Features of the Club ... 2016-17

The faces of the past have now been replaced by those of the present.

What of the future? We are still a sound, though perhaps too small a club – however small meetings often

bring out the best in members. We enjoy our Christmas parties and our Anniversary celebrations. We are

fortunate in still having a strong core group of members – but they are ageing. One challenge is finding and

retaining new members able and willing to put sufficient time into Toastmasters. Today the trend is for

short-term club involvement before ‘moving on’. The other challenge we face is to reverse the trend of

members disappearing once that ‘magic’ CTM is attained. For we need the involvement of experienced

members both for mentoring newcomers and also to help maintain pride in the history and tradition of this

great organization.

If we can maintain enthusiasm and build up membership – our future is bright indeed.

May I conclude this little History on the note that I derived great benefit and pleasure from my forty years

in Toastmasters and I can only sincerely wish the same for you all! Joanna

How did it begin?

In the beginning a number of interested people decided a Toastmasters Club was needed in the Caboolture

Area. On Tuesday, 20th May, 1986, a demonstration meeting was held at the Library of the Caboolture

State High School to gauge the general interest in forming a club within the area.

A further meeting was held on the 26th May at the same location, and at that meeting a motion was put

and carried that a Toastmasters club be formed at Caboolture.

At the fourth meeting on 23rd June, the Standard Constitution and By-Laws of Toastmasters International

were adopted. The first office bearers were elected under the supervision of District 69 Governor Dianne

Riddell DTM.

The 8th meeting held on 6th September featured the Charter dinner at the Caboolture Steak House (was

located opposite K Mart) where the guests include Peter Slipper MLA, Shire Chairman Alex Barr, District 69

Governor Clare Murphy, Immediate Past District Governor Dianne Riddell, and Communications Lt Gov.

Andrew Rankin ATM.

Meetings thereafter were held at several locations, finally finding the Top Hat Restaurant in March 1988 as

somewhat permanent meeting place.

The story continues!!!!!!!!
