Qantas pilots pushing back THE union representing Qantasinternational pilots is attractingworldwide attention over plans totake strike action for the first timesince 1966. The move has been widelyreported, with the issue seeingthe pilots strongly resist plans byceo Alan Joyce to restructure thecarrier’s international operations. On 24 Aug Joyce is set to outlineproposals to return the operationto profitability, and the pilots areinsisting that a new enterpriseagreement includes a “Qantasflight/Qantas pilot” clause. “We now have a ceo whobelieves you can substituteAustralian Qantas pilots withoutsourced and offshorealternatives without doingdamage to the brand,” said BarryJackson, president of theAustralian and International PilotsAssociation. “He’s dead wrong. The key pointof differentiation Qantas has as abrand is its Australian safetyculture,” he said. The union said pilots were nowdeciding on what form ofProtected Industrial Action they

would take, after overwhelmingsupport which saw 89% of eligiblepilots voting, of whom 94% werein favour of strike action. Qantas issued a statement inresponse, saying it was preparedto negotiate reasonable increasesbut the “current demands fromthe union are excessive andunsustainable. “The pilots’ union is demandingpay increases, free flights on topof already heavily discountedairfares and a requirement thatpilots on all Qantas airlines, including Jetstar, are paid thesame rates as Qantas pilots,” thestatement said. As well as pay rises the unionwants two free internationalflights a year for pilots - as well asfor QF to fund two union officials.

AFTA UPDATEThe latest insights from AFTA’s

Chief Executive, Jayson Westbury

IT IS really pleasing to have been a part of the night of nights lastSaturday (09 July) when the travel industry got together for the NationalTravel Industry Awards (NTIA). The team at AFTA has already received a great deal of thank you andcongratulatory emails and calls to say how well the evening went andhow so many people enjoyed themselves. The team at AFTA pridethemselves on producing a quality event for the travel industry. NTIA has once again done this and we are delighted that we cancontinue to deliver such a wonderful event for the travel industry. Wecherish the support of so many sponsors who make this all possible. I also extend a big congratulations to all the winners from last Saturdaynight. Many new names added to the winners list and also many winnersfrom previous years. For the agent categories it is a real process as they have to undergojudging and spend considerable time in preparing their presentations.Over 70 face to face interviews were undertaken this year with thejudges, so winners can really relish their win as the process is verycompetitive. Also this year, for the first time, the best agency group category wasjudged. Congratulations to Travelscene American Express which wonthe inaugural award - it’s the first year that the groups presented to thejudges against a criteria. NTIA is building year on year and AFTA remains committed todelivering this important gathering for the travel industry and provide anational process for recognition via the awards for travel agents, agencybusinesses and of course suppliers. We also welcomed into the Hall of Fame this year, Princess Cruises. The Hall of Fame is awarded with the same business wins in the samecategory three years in a row. Well done to Princess Cruises. The other standout from this year was Jules Lund who was the MC forthe second year. Everyone that I have talked to has said what awonderful job he did with a very large and loud audience. Jules has a real connection with the travel industry and has a way ofbringing a load of fun to the evening, but also acknowledge theimportance of winners in each of the 30 categories awarded. Julesreally adds an excellent level of talent to the night and this isreally appreciated by everyone who attends. So, that is NTIA for 2011. We now start planning for nextyear and think hard about how AFTA will deliver anotherexcellent event in 2012.
