to ^ - MUSEUM OF MODERN ,JM! 730 Fifth avenue at 57th St., New York (Sity <*ffa AJou • ^ 0 ( l<H3© The exhibition of paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints by Oorot and Daumier which opened October 15th at the Museum of Modefn -irt, closed last 3unday, Nov. 23rd, with an attendance of 25,000 recorded over a period of a little more than five weeks. Becuase of the great value of the works lent for the exhibition the efforts made "by the directors to meet XXX insistent demands to prolong the exhibition were unsuccessful. I.Iore than a third of the pictures came from important foreign oollections nd it was impossible to extend these lo ns beyond the time originally trimrritaft agreed. The Louvre in Paris, the National Gallery in Berlin and the b'olkwang l.Iuseum in Essen, Germany, made loans for the first time in their his- t ry to an .mierican insitution. Other pr minant European lenders were Lord Berners and Mr« and Mrs. oamuel Oourtauld, London, Baron Napoleon Gourgaud, £aris, and Eduard Fuchs, Berlin. Among the -American lenders were the Metropolitan -.iuseum, New York, the Phillips Memorial Gallery, Washington, The Ohester Dale Collection, New York, the Samuel Lewisohn Collection, New York, and Llrs. John D. Rockefeller, J r . , New York. The exhibition aooomplisehed the purpose of presenting the tvfo gre t ISth Century French masters in a new and Important light. Not more than four oil paintings by Daumier, who had been best known to the public as a caricaturist and lithographer, had been exhibited to-gether in New York until the Museum brought to-gether the forty-five which were sh vm in the recent ex- hibition. Oorot was represented almost entirely by landscapes and figure pieces from his early and middle periods which provoked surprise and contro- versy in that large section of the public famil/ar with Oorot only in his misty, grey green landscapes.
