1970 JACKRABBIT PREVIEW Long on desire and determ ination and short on depth-that is the

story in a nutshel l of the 1 970 South Dakota State University football squad.

New head coach Dean Pryo r, a former assistant at Kansas State University, wil l have a nucleus of 2 6 returning lettermen around which to rebuild. Lost from the 1 969 edition of the Jackrabbits are 1 3 lettermen, including a l l -conference standouts Clyde Hagen, Jim Langer and Tim

•th. Al l three were tri-captains and signed professional grid contracts er the summer.

. "We've got a lot of big holes to fil l , but we are sti l l optimistic about improving on last year's 3-7 record ," Pryor said. "We wil l inject a few new plays on offense, improve ou r passing game and work more for quickness," he added.

"We do have a few outstanding footbal l players at several positiom and we have recruited an adequate group of incoming freshmen who may give us some l imited he lp."

Expected to be the mainstays of the squad this season are two-year lettermen Tom Jones, Tim E l l iott, Tim Keller, Rick Heard, Dennis Johnson, John Mil ler and Cal R iesgaard.

The Jacks have two strong candidates for the quarterback position in junior John Mol ler and sophomore Larry Armstrong.

A strong point for the Jacks this season may be the offensive backfield, with the top three ground gainers retu rning. E l liott led the Jacks last season in rushing with 469 yards in 87 carries, followed by sophomore Max Sinclair with 4 39 in 1 1 8 carries and Kel ler with 430 yards in 1 38 carries.

Defensivel y the Jacks wi l l count heavil y on Riesgaard, a senior defensive tackle ; Johnson, a senior l inebacker; Jim Heinitz, a junior linebacker and Bob El lwanger, a junior cornerback.

Looking ahead to NCC action, Pryor expects the North Dakota State Bison to again play the favorites role, but also looks for the UNI Panthers to make a strong bid for the title.

Where the Jackrabbits wi l l end up depends a great deal on how wel l several younger players develop and if key players remain off the injured l ist.
